I wholeheartedly agree that the premium is far superior, I myself got the 2012 games edition and it is stunning (must remember to buy a non special edition one at some point). Runs like a dream and the detail is just insane! Liam.
Bought this model just before Christmas to allow my cousins to play with some of my other models and to protect my current layout (under construction). The plastic wheels on the dummy unit and coach where disappointing but having only paid £50 for the set it was well worth the investment to get someone going in the hobby. The model runs beautifully as well
reminds me of the 36 year old tyco trains, that I got from my dad, plastic wheels, 1 powered bogey, and one can barely pull 3 cars....... made of plastic. I love those trains some much
They are excelent value for money unlike most large Greman companies. Like basic tankers for less than 15 pound per three pack or a DCC Sound fitted Maunsell Schools class for 130 pound (that was a crazy Hattons deal).
Yes, you just need one delivering 16 V AC and use the low voltage plug uf the Hornby wall transformer. You could alternatively use a converter with a british socket and hook it up as usual. I personally use a simple adapter for using british plugs in european sockets , but you can use any standart low voltage DC controller aswell.
the wheels with grips are good. because if someone buys this set and there layout has a ascending grade, the grips will help. or for the little kids might want it to grip to the rails better so it can go faster.
There is a point to cleaning plastic wheels, I found that out after not cleaning my coach wheels, the stuff comes off the wheels back onto the track, wheels just carry it around your layout.
Will, check that the power car front bogie does not have a wire to the motor adrift. All my Blue Rapiers have power to the motor from the front bogie xx
I may be wrong but I understood that to use the DC power track with DCC the capacitor needs to be removed first. I read that it interferes with DCC operation.
Another great review, I imagine its called the Blue Rapier to make it appeal to kids although to be fair including Javelin in the name sounds much more exiting!!!
This would probably make a good detailing project. Bit of paint and weathering. Maybe some scratchbuilding? You could probably make something to be proud of out of it.
If I ever see anyone call ic82 a unfair reviewer, I'll link them to this video. It has plastic wheels and traction tires, yet he gave it a 6, which is a fair score. He understands this is for beginners and younger people wanting to get into the hobby. He gave the single wheel a bad score because it was aiming at the serious market, yet had traction tires and plastic wheels.
I can understand why you don't really like the fact that this particular Blue Rapier set is a "cheapo". But hey a train set is a train set. We can still enjoy it. Also, I'm trying to get my hands on a British train. My first choices were the A4 Pacific "Mallard" and the predecessor A1 Pacific "Flying Scotsman. Do you think this a good start or do you think I should start a bit smaller?
I needed to know why they couldn’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for most of the mainline Trains so that they could extend the unused abandoned underground train stations. Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock which will include the class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign all of them into an overhead wire line trains and also make most of them into Five carriages per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 8-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 10-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 507, class 508, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into 11 carriages per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers? A Stock Train and 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it even much more Larger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Railway tunnel into a High-Speed Railway lines? The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Railway line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. Then put the modernised 11 carriages per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised Waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those Five countries such as Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 carriages per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 47 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project if that will be OK for London Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from the Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Australia, Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden more Easily. Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly Line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street can they also make another brand new underground train station in Chingford and could they extend the Piccadilly Line and the DLR right up to Chingford? All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Gardner 6LXC, Cummins M11, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner LG1200 and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains. Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to make more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and can they order Every 87 Octagon and Every 48 Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique small no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 147MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 147MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units, can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!!!!!, oh can you make all of those 18 Tonne Boxes of Coal for all of those 147MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!!!! So please make sure that the Builders can do as they are told!!!!!!!! And PLEASE do something about these very very important Professional ideas Please? Prime Minister of England, Prime Minister of Australia, Prime Minister of Sweden, Prime Minister of Germany, Prime Minister of Italy, Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.
I recommend checking out D335Media for a review of the Class 70. I don't like the Freightliner livery and so will not be getting one whilst that is the only livery it is in.
I have a model review that I know you won't be able to resist....not sure if you've seen it before but ehattons has released an LMS beyer garrat 2-6-0 0-6-2!! Very rare in real life and very unique to british railways, I strongly suggest getting one for the benefit of yourself and your viewers :p
to add to my original comment it has brought me good entertainment until my second train arrived but apart crom that you really dont have to go on about it being 'cheapo' yes it is cheap but thats not the point its about enjoyment not aesthetics.
speaking of fast trains I've been on the intercity125 first great western HST from Swansea to Cardiff ya know the train that dos the Swansea-London line
Hey great review.I was just wondering if you have done, or could do a comparison review between Bachmann and Hornby, there are a couple of loco models which they both make 1 is the Tornado in BR green, i think a comparison review would be very interesting. Also i got to ask, why have you not made a proper layout yet?
Sadly, I seem to have lost a bit of the pantograph. Ah well, cut me some slack, it's my first model train. As I mentioned, it's the Olympic (purple) one.
You should get the new version called intercity express it is the same but better or if you don't want to buy it I will send it in once you have sorted mail out.
23:27 For kids, I am a kid (sort of) and a serious modeller!
:(
Same, I have quite an extensive layout but only a 43 and a 390.
on argos there is the new version called intercity express
Trainz Geek yea I have it
@@itsarthur1900 Is it any good?
CompleteGamingTV yea it does the job and has nice lights on the front. : )
It’s Arthur does it all the cars have metal wheels
I wholeheartedly agree that the premium is far superior, I myself got the 2012 games edition and it is stunning (must remember to buy a non special edition one at some point). Runs like a dream and the detail is just insane! Liam.

The plastic wheels on the dummy unit and coach where disappointing but having only paid £50 for the set it was well worth the investment to get someone going in the hobby. The model runs beautifully as well
My blue rapier was wrapped under the Christmas tree, it was first train set getting back into the hobby
this to me is the best hornby train set because all the packaging is recycable
I think most of the hornby sets on argos are recyclable
reminds me of the 36 year old tyco trains, that I got from my dad, plastic wheels, 1 powered bogey, and one can barely pull 3 cars....... made of plastic. I love those trains some much
Omg. You have to get the east coast 225 flying Scotsman! It look amazing!
This is a few years old now, but I have to say that I think it runs really well and the lights are a nice touch in a budget model.
They are excelent value for money unlike most large Greman companies.
Like basic tankers for less than 15 pound per three pack or a DCC Sound fitted Maunsell Schools class for 130 pound (that was a crazy Hattons deal).
Interesting review , I have dcc mine reinserted lights at both ends and all works very nicely pulling the full 6 coach rake!

7:01 I can think of places where it will go at the buffers
the London Olympic 2012 model is just this but re-painted, it comes with the exact same instructions, they even say blue rapier on the instructions
If anything else, you can easy wire up the front lighting pickup to the rear one to prevent dying
I have the Premium Sir Cris Hoy class 395 and it looks beautiful.
If you get the better one will you like a kinda race off with the pendolino
It's a starter set, not a budget train! It's called the blue rapier because it's a less detailed model of a class 395
I like it, more realistic than the premium version
There is a point to cleaning plastic wheels, I found that out after not cleaning my coach wheels, the stuff comes off the wheels back onto the track, wheels just carry it around your layout.
Will, check that the power car front bogie does not have a wire to the motor adrift. All my Blue Rapiers have power to the motor from the front bogie xx
I would love to get a premium one... Sir Chris Hoy looks tempting!
Selling trains? You monster! A train is for life, not just for Christmas! ;)
What happens if you take the "b" out of "Hornby"?
Yeah I was searching hornby when I didnt push down the b hard enough, LoL
Did you accidently press Google images as well? lol
No, would have been like lolololol
and the i out of rapier
dalek 654 Lol, that's brilliant
I am getting this set for my birthday
Did you get the train set
Legend has it his parents still have it hidden in their room.
I may be wrong but I understood that to use the DC power track with DCC the capacitor needs to be removed first. I read that it interferes with DCC operation.
I watch all of your clips I have an N gauge layout so the N gauge project was really helpful thanks
For £40 on Amazon, I got some decent track, a spare analogue controller.
Another great review, I imagine its called the Blue Rapier to make it appeal to kids although to be fair including Javelin in the name sounds much more exiting!!!
Please do a project. Fabulous video!
This would probably make a good detailing project. Bit of paint and weathering. Maybe some scratchbuilding? You could probably make something to be proud of out of it.
Can't wait for the premium review
You can get a replacement piece for about £2 or £3 so I would just recommend that really.
If I ever see anyone call ic82 a unfair reviewer, I'll link them to this video. It has plastic wheels and traction tires, yet he gave it a 6, which is a fair score. Hi IC82. Good review. Many are missing them. Including me.
I got the 2012 special edition version and the deatail is amazing but it looks like for the set they really went budget
the model in the james may toy stories is the prototype mode of the premium model
Amazing thanks now i know what train set to get
I’ve been on these trains too Ashford from London St Pancras & to Folkestone for a model railway show Very fast.
I've read nothing good about this model anywhere so guessed what your summation would be!
Yeah, looking at the purple one, it is the railroad model, but with metal wheels and a cooler paint job.
Those couplings remind me of the die-cast Thomas the Tank trains. You can hear how cheap it is when you handle it.
I can I've never seen it before but I go to cover priory and there is 3 sidings so it dose have the potential to happen
I have that and it runs well on old points
I can understand why you don't really like the fact that this particular Blue Rapier set is a "cheapo". But hey a train set is a train set. We can still enjoy it. Also, I'm trying to get my hands on a British train. My first choices were the A4 Pacific "Mallard" and the predecessor A1 Pacific "Flying Scotsman. Do you think this a good start or do you think I should start a bit smaller?
Adam Swindell this is a good start , you can do something smaller and the biggest I’d probably go is a pendolino or flying Scotsman to start off
is it possible to swap out the AC adaptor on that train set if I were to buy it?
cause I live in america.
Yes we use those plugs in Ireland.
yes we use that adaptor in Eire!
it's actually pronounced rap-yer and a rapier is a thin sharp knife used in early modern europe in 16th and 17th centuries
I've been waiting for this for so long!
I think the siding is supposingly supposed to be an extra if you've bought another StArTeR pack
I have no plans to at the moment - but then if I were to buy every loco people suggest I would need about £1.2million lol

hey there, do you know any sites that still sell this train set
also, when the dummy car comes towards you does the dummy car have directional lights?
Purusoth Thambiayah argos still sell it
Was that 71000 "Duke of Gloucester" I saw in the first few minutes on the cover of the 2013 catalog? A review is needed here.
Great video well done.
What other prizes will there be in the competition? I will be entering!
We call your "hand-o'-god" the 0-5-0 switcher on this side of the Atlantic.
Sir Chris Hoy a rower haha, that was funny.
This is the first vid of yours I watched I watched it like 1 year ago
the one in james may was a proto type and it the good one
should not be too difficult to adapt the powerloom inside. I actually suspect she is on one axle pick up only
I recommend checking out D335Media for a review of the Class 70. I don't like the Freightliner livery and so will not be getting one whilst that is the only livery it is in.

Great vid AGAIN Will
STOP IT SOME PEOPLE MIGHT GET THIS FOR CHRISTMAS!!!
Uhm.
Will you be buying the Duke of Gloucester when she comes out?
I love train sets
😃😀
I love this train
We do use the same ac adapter in Ireland for your information :(
Ye they use those adapters in Ireland otherwise if anyone drove to Northern Ireland you'd need an adapter which'd be a bit stupid
Yes but we want cardboard because plastic is bad
You got to it yay!
when is the building a model railway video part 2 coming i was looking forward to that :(
Oh and a bit of re-wiring and metal wheels all round of course.
They do use that power adapter in isla
So when is the premium edition review coming out?
to add to my original comment it has brought me good entertainment until my second train arrived but apart crom that you really dont have to go on about it being 'cheapo' yes it is cheap but thats not the point its about enjoyment not aesthetics.

Did you sort out the points power problem?
Is this a budget set by any chance? Still an entertaining and informative review as always.
are going to get the blue rapier premium set?
Are the fan grills detailed
Is the blue rapier Dcc ready I have one and I am double checking
Pretty much any model shop will have them.
Hornby do the 395 for both their ranges right?
Wow that train is fast
My Olympic Class 395 has all metal wheels and on the middle coach too.So why didn't hornby
When are you doing the new version again my son asked me to write this
The name ”Blue rapier” makes it sound like it featured in a lot of 18 rated crime movies
Could you start putting the price in at the end of the video?
Are you going to get the new hornby e-link???
I have got the opposite train and I sometimes ride on those
Will you are the BEST!!!!!!! :)
are you geting the tornado train or set
Sadly, I seem to have lost a bit of the pantograph. Ah well, cut me some slack, it's my first model train. As I mentioned, it's the Olympic (purple) one.
You should get the new version called intercity express it is the same but better or if you don't want to buy it I will send it in once you have sorted mail out.
they have an additonal blue rapier coach from Ebay for £10.00
