I took your advice Rabbi Singer and bought The Art Scroll, The Stone Edition Chumash. When I opened it and started reading, it was like a breath of fresh air. It's beautifully written. I can't describe the joy I feel reading it.

This was a very bad move, as the Art Scroll occasionally mistranslates the Miqra to make it conform to Rabbinic intepretations. (Combining it with Rashi is even worse.)
I recommend Vol. 1 & Vol. 2 of the Schoken Bible by Prof. Everett Fox (the Torah and first Prophet books) and the Koren Edition for the remainder of the Miqra.

I wish I had come across this before I bought the large Tenach, but I just got my Artscroll Stone Chumash, Prophets, and Writings. The Tenach was great, but without the commentary I was very lost. You are not kidding the commentary and explanations are fantastic and beautiful and I now feel confident moving forward.

@Kevin Belgrove: The "New Testament" you preach from is absolutely NOT scripture that was given to mankind by God! NOWHERE did God ever tell us to expect FURTHER SCRIPTURES after Mt. Sinai, since, He specifically told us, that the words He gave to us there are ETERNAL (i.e. STILL in effect and binding TODAY - a LIVING document!), and that we are NOT to follow ANY OTHER TEACHING than what is in those ETERNAL Hebrew scriptures. Christianity IS another teaching, therefore, we are NOT to follow what it says - God's orders! Also, NOWHERE did God ever mention the name "Yahuah", "Jesus", or "Yeshua" to us, NOR did He tell us that we need to be "saved", NOR did He tell us that He requires HUMAN BLOOD (a purely pagan ritual that God ABHORS!) as atonement for our sins.
Also, God specifically told us in Deut. 17:8-11 to LISTEN to what the Rabbis teach us, and NOT to turn either to the right or the left of what they teach us! In the absence of the Temple, the Rabbis are our spiritual teachers, since they have been studying the original Hebrew scriptures all the way back to Mt. Sinai - something that false, pagan Christianity REFUSED to do, leaving them in profound darkness as to what God actually said to us there! This resulted in the blasphemous, false, pagan religion of "Christianity", that preaches AGAINST what God said to us at Mt. Sinai. PLEASE do the research, learn from the Rabbis, and buy yourself a Hebrew Bible (says "TANACH" on the cover) so you can see for yourself what God actually said to us.

Rabbi, just to let you know that this must be the third time am watching this video. I bought the Chumash Art Scroll, Stone Edition and I can testify that I will never regret it, best book I will ever have in life. It also helps that I read Hebrew and also Noahide, Baruk Hashem. Yes, I also have the two volumes, lets get biblical. I am drinking from the source and now very spiritually fulfilled. The world looks different. Great comment Joseph. I have the Rtscroll stone edition chumash too and it is great but only covers the 5 books of Moses. I would suggest you get the artscroll tanach. It is a green hardcover unlike the blue hardcover of the chumash. It will jave all the rest of tanach for you. A definite must in basics for you. Hope your learning is coming along well. @@goldengun9970 I second your comment. The Chumash was what I was raised on but I have the green art scroll tanach and it is the most cherished book in my library by far. Of course, anyone with a desire to learn Torah and scriptures should learn to read the Hebrew, but for those who aren’t there yet the translation provided by Artscroll is the best out there.

Thank you for this video. Because of learning disabilities it's near impossible for me to learn foreign languages, I can learn bits and pieces but that's about it. So the best I can do is read multiple translations of foreign text and read multiple commentaries in order to learn.
Have been trying for many years and know a few words.Hebrew the language of creation and my neshama loves to hear it.Todah and will continue to work on it.Bought a Torah from Chabad now will purchase the Chumash as soon as possible. Todah .

I was just looking for English translations of the Hebrew Bible, with a Jewish perspective, and the first few results I got were all deceptively-named Messianic Jewish translations. Names like "The Complete Jewish Bible" and "The Orthodox Jewish Bible". Took some digging to find that they were in fact not Jewish, but Christian.

What you say makes sense. I was raised Christian but found myself looking outside Christianity since I was 12 years old. I've looked at Judaism many times but didn't pursue it because I was afraid of what people would think. While still Christian, the more I study, the less it makes sense. I'm taking your advice and learning Hebrew. It makes no sense to build my life on Jewish scriptures and NOT know Hebrew.

Thanks Rabbi, I only wish that the 1st time I would have listened till the end. I would not have ordered the full Stone Edition of the Israel Bible. Instead I would have ordered book by book as you suggest. The difference between The Torah and my 365 and The Stone Edition is amazing. If you're interested in leaving Christianity, but don't want to convert, you might consider seeking out a Noahide group, and continue learning from Rabbi Singer and other Orthodox rabbis on the Tanak Talk channel (the man who hosts the Tenak Talk programs (wil'Liam Hall) is a Noahide who left Christianity, then Messianic Christianity, so he could answer a lot of your questions).

Oh and to add if there isn't one then write a translation and publish it I buy it. Your version may not turn out 100% spot on but at least it would help me to escape the bias christology in other translations.

I know it has been a while, but have you or anyone reviewed the Artscroll Interlinear 5 Volume Slip case Chumash?
I could only get a JPS at my bookstore. Art Scroll is on the list, as I can see many flaws in the JPS easily. That's a bummer, but it helps me learn Hebrew and I like that. Thank You Rabbi.

As a muslim I find the jewish scriptures beautiful and extremely interesting. While reading some translations, I found a few part didn't make sense, so I started to read a bit of Hebrew and looking for videos. It's the first video that I see that makes perfect sense to me. Thank you very much.
Islam presents different laws compared to those found in the Torah. Some Quranic directives are even deemed as abhorrent in the perspective of HaShem, the God of Israel. Additionally, Islam follows a different calendar system, venerates a separate 'holy' site, and holds differing eschatological prophecies. It's also crucial to note that Allah is not to be called Father. Considering these differences, the Ishmaelite heresy of Islam cannot be viewed as a valid religion from HaShem.
For example: קרבן means a sacrifice... But it is also with the root of "to make it closer..", which no translation can translate to you...
I bought my Torah Sion Levi Chumash in Spanish and has the original Hebrew writings and comentaries in Hebrew and Spanish and its the greatest thing i have. I bought the Tanak in Spanish only but i will buy it later with the Hebrew Text and Spanish, but its in 2, 3 or 4 books. I dont know if Jews have planned to make 1 great big Tanak that has all in 1. I know it will be very big Tanak but it would be a great idea to make one like that.
May also recommend the Gutnick edition. it includes major commentaries and those of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

My favorite translation is the Shocken Bible by Professor Fox who tries for a literal interpretation the most striking of which is not turning the Creator's name into Adonai by using the letters of the tetragrammaton, and even then he gets somethings wrong. The real answer is to learn biblical hebrew.
@Kevin Belgrove So I see that you are in a sect that mispronounces the name of the Creator, i.e. the Assembly of [Your Term ]. I got a real kick out of the website's reference to H3068 which is to the tetragrammaton, a name for the Creator which the Masoretes did not provide the vowel pointings for, hence the correct pronunciation is debated by scholars...As the Anchor Bible Dictionary explains: "The pronunciation of YHWH ... is a scholarly guess." The son of God is the Children of Israel. How do I know that? Because our Hebrew Scriptures says so: "And thou shalt say unto Pharaoh, Thus saith the LORD, Israel is my son, even my firstborn." Exodus 4:22. Nowhere in the Hebrew Scriptures is the messiah referenced as the son of God, but rather from the House of David. [Note: The "son of man" is not the "son of God".] Your citation to the Christian Scriptures has no weight because It frequently conflicts with the word of God. You might as well be quoting the Egyptian Book of the Dead or the Book of Mormon to me.....alleged 'holy books' which I reject. And yes the Hebrew scriptures are my teacher, Proverbs 6:23: "For the commandment is a lamp, and the teaching is light, and reproofs of instruction are the way of life;". As long as you are listening to Rabbi Singer's presentation there is still hope for you.

What do you think of the current Multi-Volume JPS Tanakh Commentary set published so far?
The most useful Chumash at present, in my humble opinion, is the Kehot edition. It intersperses the rest with material from the major commentaries, usually Rashi. In addition th e re is commentary based on the weekly talks of the Lubavitcher Rebbe whose scholarly, spiritual and mystical discussion of the text, over more than 40 annu a l cycles of Torah study, is penetrationg and illuminating. For the Hebrew readers it has the text plus Rashi (with vowel markings !) And Onkelos (a first century translation of the Hebrew into the language of the day, Aramaic.) The result is a masterpiece , helpful to the people new to Torah study and to scholars.
It is a 5 volume set, one for each of the 5 books of Moses. Very well bound, it won't fall apart for 10 years or more of regular study.

Ita funny that I wanted to ask about the Chumash and I find this video. But not only that, do I get more information than expected!!! I love that you can get these in an individual book with the commentary. I was not brought around this or any other kind of religion growing up, but that I've recently been exposed to Judaism I'm at a point why anything else?? I recently went to a Jewish bookstore and picked up a 3 vol Tanakh, w the Torah, the Writings and the Prophets. I also had picked up a book called to be a Jew by Rabbi Hayim Donin. In reading it, it's like a door has been opened to my soul and I'm a dried sponge looking for the water. I don't think I've ever been this excited about anything in my life before. The closest was when my niece was born. So I've come across a decent sum of money that will start with the chumash in a 5 volume set, and then work gradually to building a library of a single volume of each of the books from the writings and the prophets, along with the commentaries. Thank you so very much for covering this!! I also intend on learning the biblical Hebrew. I just don't know where to go on that part is all.
Very good advice. I have the JPS but do feel so much is missing. Now I know where to look. Thank you. I’m not Jewish and always was brought up with christian blinders on even though the christian scriptures did not make any sense to me. After studying Basic Judaism at Temple Beth Shalom for a little less than a year I realized why Judaism rejects Jesus as messiah. It isn’t, as I have always been told, that the Jews were blinded but rather the opposite. They knew the scriptures better than anyone and knew what to look for. Jesus was not even close to being that. Judaism is the only religion/way of life that makes sense. I will look into the Art Scroll as you suggested. Shalom.
Art Scroll strays too often from the actual Text of the Miqra by following Rashi and the Midrash.
Let me introduce you to a better alternative. I recommend Vol. 1 ("Five Books of Moses") & Vol. 2 (first Prophets books) of the Schoken Bible by Prof. Everett Fox, which include commentaries by him. Add the Koren Edition for the remainder of the Miqra.
I hope additional parts of the Miqra, translated by Prof. Fox's expert hands, will hit the market in the upcoming decades as he labors to translate more Tanakh books.
Yeshua is the messiah. He really is. You have placed different blinders on. Yeshua is the messiah and he matches the description of the messiah. Also Orthodox Jews are taught to read scripture differently. Gid has hardened them to the understanding of the messiah, not all of them but many of them. You’ll see one day, he is your savior and I pray you stop rejecting him, because he is the door to knowing Adonai. Without Yeshua you’ll never truly know who you worship. Without the Holy Spirit dwelling richly in you which comes from knowing the messiah, you will be deceived and lost.

Seems like the other Jews are "magically" drawn to Rabbinic translations like Art Scroll.
@@Servant_of_Yeshua96 Since you believe that all your sins have been "forgiven" because you believe J. Christ "the savior" died for and instead of you, you are in real trouble! Not only are you still sin-laden, you have added a new, terrible sin to the old batch! You are guilty of idolatry for worshiping a false "savior" and god. YHWH's word plainly states that He (YHWH) alone is Savior; (Isaiah 43:11). He alone can forgive sin (Isaiah 43:25). He alone is the True Deity (Isaiah 43:10)!!
Moreover, you cannot "believe away" sin! Magic plays absolutely no role in the system of sin and atonement established by YHWH, the sole Creator of this universe. Atonement by "faith" is not part of YHWH's setup. The only way a sinner can get his sins forgiven is by repenting and by doing and fulfilling what YHWH wants him to do!! YHWH says: "Again, when I say to the wicked, you shall surely die; if he turn from his sin (repents) and do that which lawful and right ("good works")...he shall surely live, he shall NOT die!! NONE of his sins which he had committed shall be remembered against him! He has done that which is lawful and right! He shall surely LIVE!" (Ezekiel 33:14-16). Ezekiel was a prophet of YHWH. He wasn't a Christian preacher!
In Moses' day, the repentant sinner usually (NOT ALWAYS) offered an animal sacrifice to symbolize his "giving" and YHWH's "accepting".
Later prophets elaborated on how sacrifices are worthless without obedience:
"Behold, to OBEY is BETTER than sacrifice!" (1 Samuel 15:22). "Do I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats?" (Psalms 50:13)."By practicing mercy and truth is sin atoned for!" (Proverbs 16:6).
HOW can you come to YHWH? YHWH provides the answer: "Return, O Israel, to YHWH your almighty, for you have stumbled in your iniquity! Take with you WORDS and return to YHWH! (WHAT words?) Say to Him: forgive all iniquity and accept GOODNESS (good works). Thus, will we offer, INSTEAD of bullocks (blood) the offerings of our LIPS!" (Hosea 14:2-3).
According to YHWH's word, NO ONE can die for you! If you don't believe me, read Exodus 33:31-33; Deut. 24:16; Ezekiel 18:3-4. But YHWH's demands can be met by you, if only you will know the truth. You can come to YHWH on your own! Read YHWH's word! "With what offering can I come before YHWH, and bow myself before the Mighty One on high? Should I come to him with burnt offerings, with year-old calves? Will YHWH be pleased by thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Should I give my first-born for my transgression (human sacrifice, like the crucifixion!), the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? It has been told you, O man, what is good, and what YHWH (not religious doctrine but YHWH!) requires of you: ONLY to DO what is just (YHWH's COMMANDMENTS) and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your Almighty!" (Micah 6:6-8).
Hallelu-Yahh, praise YHWH! His Salvation is open to all! No believing in fairy-stories, no bloody crucifixions! No "divine suicide" on a Roman Cross! Plain and simple is the Way of YHWH! Will you take Him at His Word today?

I would be curious to hear your thoughts about an online resource by the name of Sefaria, Rabbi.
I do wish that I had had access to your recommendations earlier. For me, finding THE Bible has been a long process, beginning with French versions (my native language) of the Catholic Bible, then the obvious KJV, NAB, NIV, etc.
I eventually discovered Judaism and bought my first Tanakh (JPS), which was replaced by a Jewish Study Bible (featuring the JPS), and recently, the Artscroll one. So the next step will be to buy the multiple volumes individually. I'm also studying Hebrew, but it will be a while before I can read the Tanakh in Hebrew. In the meantime, though far from perfect, an online solution like Sefaria, with linked comments for each verse and tons of content seems heaven sent. Although nothing replaces actual books.

Yes. Miraculously transmitted and miraculously preserved. Now, what value do the Ketuvim and Nevi'im have for Jewish people? It's like the story ends 40 years after leaving Egypt. The fulfillment of the promises to Abraham happened after entering Canaan. One of my favorite accounts is the one in Joshua 5:13-15.

The same with the ancient Arabic. That's why earlier on Muslims rejected the idea of translation in the beginning. Now missionaries have built a carrier on characterizing on the meaning of the sacred text.

Good day Rabbi, How about Arabic translations? Arabic is my mother tongue and I believe it's closer to Hebrew than English. any advice?
You, my Arabic speaking friend, should learn Hebrew. It is so easy for you. I've taught Arabic speakers here in Indonesia Biblical Hebrew in a few weeks (Arabic is much more difficult!) I don't think I ever met an Arabic speaking Jew who didn't read and understand Hebrew. The most famous Arabic translation of the Torah is of the great medieval rabbi Saadia Gaon سعيد بن يوسف الفيومي
I tried dear Rabbi, through an english website!! It did not work as you can imagine!! It's a sad state of affairs really to try to learn our cousins tongue through a foreigner! And it's difficult to find a Hebrew/Arabic teacher here in Australia. So I will have to look for a translation for now.

I'm not a rabbi, but you could try the saadia gaon's translation. You can Google it. It's a little expensive but could be useful for you :)
Sadly is only the translation of the Torah.

Yes, ArtScroll has some of the best editions of the Hebrew Bible, but too often they translate following Rashi and the Midrash instead of what the text says in Hebrew. One of their major mistranslation is their latest edition of Shir haShirim. Rashi was a great scholar, but was not infallible.

Rashi deviates from the Text's straightforward meaning in 70% of cases. He may have been an outstanding scholar, but fidelity to the plain meaning was of little concern to him.
I have Artscroll Shir hashurim. If you look carefully you will see that the notes/commentary always set out the literal translation as well.

I have four Torah, 2 with commentaries, and one without. The Spanish Torah and TaNak in Spanish doesn't have commentaries. I wanted to buy a Spanish TaNak with commentaries but have not been able to find one. I would like to buy one Spanish TaNak with the commentaries tough.

Rabbi, I was raised secular and so I was not raised with Hebrew. What program can I get that would be great to learn Biblical Hebrew from a Jewish standpoint. I have already looked online and I keep running into programs made by Christians and not by Jews.

The Living Torah and its continuation The Living Nach is a wonderful translation, with a world of the major Torah commentaries. But only the five books of Moses comes with the Hebrew, the Nach is only English.
For non-Jews and non-Orthodox Jews there is a better alternative: Vol. 1 ("Five Books of Moses") & Vol. 2 (first Prophets books) of the Schoken Bible by Prof. Everett Fox. They include commentaries he has authored.

Should rah be correctly translated as "evil" or "calamity" given the context of Isaiah 45?
I think evil is the word you're looking for.
m מדוע means from what knowledge (ידע) , based on what? למה conversely means for what (reason, purpose)?

If I start studying Hebrew now, I'll end up spending the rest of my life trying to learn a new language; and just before my death, I won't know the scriptures, but I will know, only partially , a 2nd language. What's the point in that?

I'm a Christian, but I'm curious, and I'm not asking with any other motive than curiosity and will not argue about it, do you guys read Isaiah 53 and, if so, then what do the Jewish commentaries say about it? I'm really interested in learning more about the traditional interpretation of it, but I've heard that it was removed from synagogue reading, and even that many Jews have never read it.
Only drawback with Art Scroll is the tiny font size.
3:30 i'm happy to see you so humble about the language situation, but two things to consider, which i'm not saying you don't because you've obviously mastered english, (1) english is the common language among nations and (2) even though english has its roots in the proto-indo-european language, english is an adoption language so it adopts from many languages, though the adoptions from the semitic languages are fewer than greek for example. if you just transliterate the hebrew words that have no equivalent in english, that could possibly work well. just make sure there's an english dictionary available with their definitions.
i want to learn both hebrew and greek at some point. i know the sooner you learn a language the easier it will be to catch onto it, but man learning another language is a lot of effort. it would certainly be worthwhile though. i'd most likely choose hebrew to learn before greek since it is such a different language from my own native language. i'd like to read the old testament in hebrew for sure. i've seen some demonstrations of how the written hebrew language is structured, and it blew my mind. i thought, whoever came up with the traditions of hebrew writing was a genius. i don't know if it's a jewish belief or not that hebrew originated from God (the way i see it, all of language is at least indirectly derived from God, even mathematics), but it seems the hebrew language, at least as it is written, has layers of meaning just as the Bible has layers of meaning. perhaps that's why the Bible is so densely layered as it is.
oh, i just remembered to ask. is there a transliterated hebrew Bible? that way i don't have to start with learning the hebrew alphabet and word structure?

I know your specialty seems to be educating people about the deception of the Christian church, however, you are a fantastic teacher and you make it interesting to learn scripture. I traded my JPS Tenakh for a stone edition Tenakh and Chumash. The difference is massive I wouldn't have known about the stone edition if I wouldn't have watched this video. Thank you
