Jump to ~5:00 for the actual review part; up to 5:00 is an overview of mechanics. It's worth noting that Red November is actually more fun to lose than win ... which is just as well, as it can be pretty tough to win! The first time we won it was actually a bit of a let down; going down to Davy Gnomes' Locker in a blaze of drunken gnome missile exploding glory is a hell of a lot more entertaining. The time keeping element looks and reads a lot more confusing than it is; once you've played a couple of turns it becomes almost intuitive.
"The captain is dead" has a similar concept but without dice. So if you do not like randomness of dice, that could be a good option. They also turned it into a videogame.
Thanks for the review, it looks like an interesting game. However, it has a major con for me which is player elimination. I much prefer games that won't leave a player on the sidelines, especially when that game is going to take over an hour on average. Games that have another way to handle losing a character like Eldritch Horror go over much better in my gaming group.
seems like a fun game, just one quick question: are the gnome playing peices( and any associated cards and/or tiles) male, female, or of ambiguous or unclear gender?
I don't particularly like the faint mechanic the game introduces. It's almost never beneficial to get drunk. The risks waaaaaay outweigh the rewards imo. If you're into this sort of game, I highly recommend Fantasy Flight's "Battlestar Galactica." It's slightly more complex but uses a vast majority of the same mechanics
i have hunt for red October. (board game not book or movie) just thought id say that being this is for red November And October is before November And red October came 1st .thought this woud be a cool comment.
then i will pass on this game. and hope the game developers read this and see that they just lost a buyer 'cause they failed to address the female population...
"...You're playing these inexplicably Soviet gnomes." Sold.

I love how if you have an aqualung and your within the last 10 spaces of the game you can abandon everyone else and make a swim for it.
very nice review! love the background music/ambient! Did you compose it yourself or can it be found somewhere online? ;)
Saw you at VCON on the weekend!
Can a gnome swim into the ships propeller if he drinks enough grog?
i wish you both were part of my game group :)

I know it's been a while since the review, but just a heads up that there is an alternate mechanic by which players don't get eliminated.
Steve Zissou should have been a character in this. Gnome Boss!
Nope, but he will drown if left outside the sub for an entire turn...

What is red October about. Also there is a board game called "the captain is dead" where there are no faints, no dice, and it is crazy cool.
Sonar Ping!!!
They're all pretty obviously male. :(
