Bonus points for anyone who can figure out what's going on with the bubblewrap in the right of the frame. Bonus-bonus points if you can figure out why I didn't cut it out of the frame altogether 🤣😅🤣
The bubble wrap is your inexpensive heat/humidity barrier on an old window. You didn't cut it out of the frame because "Dave gonna do what dave gonna do" and there's no shame in that!🙃
@@LeslieJermyn😂😂😂
As you mentioned you had a lighting issue. Naturally you couldn’t see it to cut from frame. 😆

No one knows what the Dave does or why.
Happy birth Dave.🎂🌹
Gorgeous orchids. The blooms are art in themselves. I feel that they are the royalty of the flower world.
Great video and see you next time🎊
Thank you, and thanks for watching! I know not everyone is going to tune in to watch a rank beginner, so I really appreciate it!
Happy birthday Dave 🎉🎉. I love your new orchids and I am sure you will be purchasing loads more 😂. I grow my falcata in a mixture of bark and charcoal and it is doing great ❤🇯🇲
Thank you! I may end up doing just that.
I make my own bark from 50 lb bags of Pine bark. I cut to size then dry and sterilize in the oven..it makes the bark super hard..lasts 2 years plus. And it's cheap to do.
Great tip! Thank you !
😮
What a cool selection of orchids. Very interesting plant that dwarf grammatophyllum as gramms are typically giants. For Neo falcata, I just use regular sphagnum moss to make a mound and wrap it with very fine twine. Happy birthday, Dave. I hope you had a great day. 🎂🥳
What a great idea. And I'm assuming that by the time the twine rots off, the spag ball is nice and formed. Perfect! And thank you for the well-wishes. Always great to get your contributions 😊
Happiest of birthdays to you Dave, lovely haul. I too have been looking at the traditional way of planting the neofinetia, it’s so beautiful. I don’t have any orchids yet but i find myself looking for them most days. My birthday is at the wkend so maybe i’ll treat myself too
Hey, hey! Happy birthday. I hope it's wonderful, however you choose to spend it! 😊
Happy Birthday Dave and Many Blessings 😘, I just passed this video to my Daughter she’s an Orchid Girl she even has tiny ones 😎 but I’m still perfecting my Hoyas 🐞👌🏽so I’ll just watch and enjoy your collection and learn a few things from my Favorite Plant Guy 😎. Spring’s around the corner 👏👏👏👏🪴🪴🪴
Ah, thanks so much! 😊
I just bought my first orchid, came back home and saw this upload! Happy BDay!
That’s great! What did you come home with??
OMG what a cute mini grammataphyllim!!
Right?! Stinkin’ cute !!!
Happy birthday to an ICON ❤

Happiest of Happy Birthdays to you my friend! A well deserved extravaganza. Enjoy 🎉
Thank you, Sonia! It was quite a splurge 😇

Kelley's Korner Orchid in PA and Brookside Orchids in CA (will ship) have 5a and 4a moss. not cheap. tho consider Kokadama for that orchid too- would look beautiful hanging in moss kokadama
Thank you! Not cheap? What is cheap these days, give me THAT list 🤣 And, yes, you're right. That would look nice. But then I would have to learn how to make a moss kokadama. Am I up for it, that's the question........
@@soberplantguy they're easy to make but messy, isnt that part of the fun? i practiced on pothos and aspargus fern. you can hang them from the twine or put on decorative pot or stand like your moss ball pix and they stay more intact. I used the natural brown twine cause fades into moss(tho it does disintegrate after a couple years). also like green twine effect.
@@colloyd5606 Great suggestions. You know what happened? I repotted those phals, and one had been wrapped in super long, fresh moss 😁 It may not be 5A, but it's long enough ( I think). If not, I'll do the twine thang 😊
OMG Dave, I sure needed to see your friendly vid today!! We Canadians wish you all a safe and very quick return of your Government to the Democracy you had as of this last January 19th! My head is still reeling from Musk's take-over of your Treasury Dept. and your Trillion dollar Payment System.
-on a happier note, wondering if you have any Calatheas or Ferns, I'd love to see some vids on those :) And Ecuagenera has tons of orchids, do you have any from them?
We owe y’all a huge, sincere apology. Shameful.
I only have a giant station, and a blue star. I don’t have any orchids from them. Ordering this close to home, I get them overnight, which matters more this time of year. Great to hear from you! I was a little worried ….
@@soberplantguy Thank you, I really hesitated in writing that note 'here', but I needed to say it to you. You have been such a sweet inspiration to me, and I've learned a lot. I was so grateful that you interrupted my panic for America. I am doing what little I can from BC by writing tons of comments and thumbs up on all of the important vids - which sounds so silly at this point. However, my husband is a dual citizen and I have made him vote in each election. It only counts for California, not a swing state, but every vote counts!
@@rebeccahenderson7761 I love this so much.
@@rebeccahenderson7761 It means the world to me. My wife *always* asks "Any good comments?" And of course this was the first thing I told her about. In fact, whipped out my phone so I could read in verbatim. Thank you so, so much.
@@soberplantguy Oh you're very sweet! I thought you looked stressed in the beginning of this vid. and was worried about you. You mentioned long covid again, so make sure you get tons of extra good quality sleep. The body heals during sleep. Take care of yourself and your sweet wife. We Canadians will always back the good Americans :) Stay safe and be well!
Have a most happy and healthy another year around the sun you teenager, I just turned into a grannycrone at 74…🤣 🌱 how nice you treated yourself to some lovely orchids! 🤗🥳
I am still *a bit* of a naughty teenager 😁 Thanks much for the wishes, and I'll be stealing the term "grannycrone" 🤣
I got a neofinetia a few years ago, wanting to get the pot and the moss it was known for. I didn't get either. I got one that enjoys full sun because I never known a orchid to enjoy full sun especially where i live in the south....and mine does. It grows in full sun, lives in bark, and started blooming when it was old enough to. He sits next to the aloe and desert rose if that tells you what kind of life he lives. So tiny and cute. One of a kind little plant.
That sounds lovely!
Hi Dave, Happy Birthday to you and wishing you many, many more! So glad you celebrated your birthday with all these lovely beauties. Loved this video! Keep celebrating your birthdays and the privilege of another year of life. You deserve it! Stay blessed. 🎂🎂🧁🧁🎉🎉. 👌🪴🥰

Happy, happy birthday! What a nice haul! I can't wait to see how you do with that Papilionanda Little Blossom. I have one (from Hausermann's) that's grown quite a bit in the two years I've had it, but Im still waiting for blooms.
Oh cool ! We can compare notes along the way ☺️
happy birthday! Beautiful orchids, tis the season I think we"re ready for spring , I just spoke with Sheldon at Carmela he,s shipping orchids to me this week. Im guessing the bubble wrap is for insulating
That's fun! Spring(ish) plant mail is the BEST plant mail..! And yes, much needed insulation. That's the door to our downstairs porch, and it leaks like a freaking sieve 🥶
Great on the Hildos...very cool orchid.
To say that I’m excited………
Happy birthday, Dave! I did get my spagnum moss from Besgrow on Amazon. I also purchased my last bag from Brookside Orchids.
What I’m hoping to find is the 5A moss, which is the really, really long strands. Not sure why no one has it.
I did find Kelley's Korner Orchid Supplies that does carry the 5A spag moss. I have personally never used this seller, but it might be something for you to check out! @soberplantguy
When you repot the angraecum hybrid, just do a very soft repotting. They are very finicky to repot and have a tendency to decline after a repot, and quickly. So just be gentle
By the way, excellent picks! The paplinanda. Being a paplianthe hybrid I imagine... May give you some trouble. From what I understand, they like a lot of heat and are one of the few vabdaceous types that can take direct sun and a lot of it. Maybe I wrong. Or maybe the hybrid they made is more tolerant to lower sun and less warmth but if you have trouble with it, something to consider looking into.
I’ve heard that about repotting. Seems like that will be quite a while down the road. Will definitely monitor light levels on the other. They recommend medium-high, so we shall see. Thanks for your input, as always!
Happy Birthday, Dave!!!!!!!!! Beautiful orchids!!!!!!
Thanks, Faith!
🎉
Wow that Phal cross looks phenomenal! Never heard of it.but don't cut the spikes on that one. I don't know what to expect with the habits of blooming whether it's true to the species or the polychilos genre. But be sure it's not a sequential kind of bloomer cause it may not end up behaving like either. But you don't wanna cut the spikes if it's got the potential to bloom 1-3 blooms over a period of time rather than a full spike of blooms all during one season
I’ll definitely keep my shears well clear 😎
Looks like you had a very happy birthday. Benji plants was selling all kinds of moss. But, his home burned down in the California fires. Wishing you the best ❤
I know. Well he’ll have an even bigger following as he moves forward ☺️
@@soberplantguy❤
Kokedama is only wrapped in moss. Inside is an appropriate medium for the plant. There are lots of tutorials on TH-cam. You’ll see it done in several different ways. It’s not even necessary to wrap them in moss. Some people use sheets of coco coir. Those look cool. That what I’m using for my first one. I also brought dried sheet moss for another one.
These are done in complete moss, all the way through. Just need those longgg strands to make it tidy.
@ i’ve never seen it done that way, but I suppose that would work too. There’s just a risk of overwatering with moss. It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out. What are you waiting for? 😉
Happy birthday to you 🎶 🎼 congratulations on your new babies! Could the bubble wrap be for a draft? And if your like me you didn’t cut it out because you forgot it until after you posted😂.
You win both bonus rounds 🤣😁🤣
Way to nurture yourself! Please, Dear Lord in heaven, dont let me catch the orchid bug! I will enjoy them through your collection. I love the orchid with the dainty pale blooms.
I don’t think you can catch it through the phone! 🤣
Lol cute Dave 👌🏽😎
😂😂😂
Happy birthday you young thing. Hope you had a great day.
Sh, yes. Enjoying my youth 🤣
Happy 🎉Birthday Dave!
I do have a question not pertaining to orchids though. Do use the same substrate for hoyas in your grow tent as you do in ambient conditions?
Largely, yes. However, if it's a Hoya really prone to root rot, I may use less coir, for instance, especially if it's young and in plastic. This is more important for me in the warm, far more humid months though.
I LOVE the look of kokedama but go out of town too often to keep one moist :(
earl May in des moines has a kokedama class feb 15, maybe that would be a good option so you don't have to buy all the supplies?
You got some beauties, happy birthday!!🎉
These are actually just moss, not the kokedama. Just looking for those long strands to tidy it up. Or not 🤣
Okay first of all, happy freaken birthday!! I thought you got yourself 57 orchids 😂 The papilionanda looks the freaken coolest to me. I might have to nab one for myself!
With the Phal. Danie Olson, I’m curious what traits it will take! Stuartiana is a cold spiking species and both parents of Joshua Irwin Ginsberg (bellina & venosa) are summer spiking species. I wonder what temp will trigger a bloom then for your hybrid 🤔
I hope you post bloom updates now :D
You'll know when I know! I realize that not everyone who tunes in for Hoya info is gonna want to watch a rank beginner show orchids, but ... it won't stop me 😆
Happy birthday 🎉
Thank you! I hope the new(ish) year is treating you well 😊
I KNEW there was a reason I like you so much!! We have the same birthday! Happy birthday, pal. I’m enjoying the heck out of this channel, and learning a lot along the way. TH-cam pushed ya my way, finally getting the algorithm right 🤣 Thanks again and can’t wait for many new videos.

I’m so glad that you’re enjoying my silly videos!
@ absolutely love them. Finally, good information with no pressures. And I’m looking forward to your saying you have New Guinea Ghost for sale 👀😁
Orchids! Orchids! Orchids! I speculate the bubble wrap has something to do with adding heat and humidity.
It has everything to do with trying to keep the collllld air from coming in much door! Humidity would be a bonus 🤣
Happy Birthday!!

wow I'm here so early I saw the "timeline 1" typo in the title 😂 happy birthday Dave!

Happy birthday, Dave!
You couldn't have timed your video better. There'll be an orchid expo in my city in a few months, so I'm thinking about pre-ordering some... and I might let myself be influenced by your choices. I'm excited about your paph moquettianum.
Because you asked last time, the inflorescence on my hoya linearis is still kicking. Smells faint during the day, but release a strong sweet scent in the evening. Some said it smelled like vanilla extract, others fake banana flavor, for me it's more like a sweet lemon detergent. Have a good one!

Happy Happy Birthday Dave! 🎂 🎉
You didn't cut it out bc...why
Thank you! I’m not sure what the other part refers to?
I believe bubblewrap is to stop the cold draught/for insulation. Is it because you have to do this every year 🤷♀?
Ding ding! Porch leaks like a sieve … as to why it’s in the frame? 😆
@@soberplantguy It leaked to the door frame and thats why it's in the frame... Happy birthday.
Oh Dave, you're still a 👶! Nice orchids. I like the psychosis, very pretty. I'm thinking to try a couple varieties in the spring when I purchase new hoyas. I didn't read the comments but did the dog jump thru the window to catch a squirrel or are you weatherproofing or did you trip into the window! Enjoy! Look forward to your next video! Dee, NY
I really don't like it when things come packed in moss... >_< unless it's in a clay pot and then I quite like it. But yes. You're correct to worry.
That seems the way to go for me.
I leave way too many comments. But if you're interested in naturally found and clean sphagnum moss that is long fiber, I have an excellent source. And seriously impressed the heck out of me. Also affordable. Comes from Canada. Lmk. Thanks to that moss I still have live moss I propagated myself and also I swear it healed some of my rescue plants.
I love all of your comments! You’re my orchid mentor 😊 Tell me about the moss when you get a chance!
