WTF Is an ETF?

  • There are now over 6,000 ETFs on 60 exchanges and ETFs exist for everything from corporate bonds to gold bars to oil futures. Like the USB port or a gas pump, ETFs have basically standardized the entire universe of investing so that everything under the sun now trades like shares of Apple. But what, exactly is an ETF and why have they become so popular? Bloomberg explains in this short video.

    For a beginner, this video can be confusing lol. In simple terms, an ETF (exchange traded fund) is a "basket of stocks." An ETF contains multiple companies, like Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, and Walmart. Furthermore, an ETF can be bought and sold like an individual stock. Lastly, what makes ETFs so special? ETFs are special because they offer diversification (less risk) when compared to buying an individual stock.

    With the approval of bitcoin ETFs, it's widely expected that the price of bitcoin will soar past $100k. I'd be remiss not to capitalize on this opportunity immediately. I'm eager to invest my $500k in cash savings, which currently languish in the face of inflation. However, I'm concerned: is it perhaps a bit late to maximize profits at this juncture?

    basically an etf is a basket of stocka that reflect an index like nifty. they can be traded as stocks, their value fluctuates throughout the day and their expense ratio is lower thean a mutual funds.
    mainly it gives you the diversification of an index while providing the flexibility of a stock.

    • @MrJtknight
      @MrJtknight 8 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      +Drakotar The prices of ETFs can drop fast from fear and can lose value because it is a supply and demand commodity. Example of risk: Some one finds an amount equal to 5% of worlds gold in the ocean, then gold becomes less valuable and ETF drops in price. Hogs(Commodity ETF) contract a disease, ETF drops. ETFs are risky like any other stock but are more risky than stocks because a majority of ETFs focus on one asset/ area such as Natural Gas, Gold Mining, Oil, Real Estate. Stocks are less risky, because the companies are more diversified.

    • @Mojo545
      @Mojo545 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      You are right on the most part, but I have to correct you on one thing. ETF's are less risky than stocks. Where as stocks (one company) could go down (also affected by sentiment) an ETF often is a collection of more stocks, so the risk is spread more evenly. Even if people get scared of techcompanies, and your Tech-ETF is losing value, the risk is still smaller than investing in just one techcompany stock, such as snappchat.

    • @KarlDag
      @KarlDag 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@MrJtknight Wrong. A single stock can drop much faster than an ETF that is made out of many different stocks.
      Also, if you invest in a single sector ETF, say, Canadian banks, then yes it could drop like a rock. But if you invest in a well diversified ETF like the s&p 500 the risk is much lower.

    .... 1:13 .... so, say you buy a 1000 dollars of a gold etf, and hold one share of a gold etf, equivalent to an ounce of gold.... what determines the price of that Gold ETF share ? Market supply and demand ? So, say the price of an ounce of gold is $500 on the gold market.... will that gold etf share price be $500 too? Or will it fluctuate as some buy, or sell gold etf shares ? Maybe the gold etf share you hold might be $200 or $700, even though in theory it is equivalent to a single ounce of gold. This educational video does not really answer that question, does it ?

    • @andrewgeissinger5242
      @andrewgeissinger5242 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      In Index Fund you are buying all of the big companies in the stock market. In ETF you are not only buying stocks but a wide range of securities like bonds, commodities, oils and etc. In short in Index Fund your money is only expose to stocks while in ETF your money is expose to different kind of investment tool but you are buying them in a package. Isn't that nice?

    • @alrocky
      @alrocky 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Vanguard index funds and their corresponding ETFs are different share classes of the same identical investment. An index fund like mutual funds trade at day's end while an ETF can be purchased and sold just like a stock, many times a day.
      "In Index Fund you are buying all of the big companies in the stock market." --- Misleading as an index fund might contain only the small companies in the stock market.
      "Index Fund your money is only expose to stocks" ---- Incorrect as there are bond index funds.
      "... it's [ETFs] for commodities rather than stocks.

      There currently is no Bitcoin ETF, at least not in the US. Perhaps Canada has one. I'm not sure. There is the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust that has been trying to get SEC approval to convert to an ETF but hasn't been approved yet. Don't ask me what the difference is between a 'Trust' and an 'ETF' though.

    How can there be more value in ETF than the whole US economy? what would happen if everyone cashed out their ETF? Would we run out of money to pay for that?

    This is a great youtube video about ETF theory. I have had Mr Reed Cooper manage my banking and it has been a successful investment.

    VERY BAD EXPLANATION. I thought I can get anything to learn, but this video is not aimed to explain wtf is ETF but a propaganda to lure people to become next victim of ETF. I prefer to view movies of MARGIN CALL, THE BIG SHORT and TOO BIG TO FAIL rather than watching this silly cheapstake 2.04 minutes ETF ads.
