I may not understand a word of French, but so many French musicians speak in a universal language--from Poulenc to Piaf.

This is invaluable! Although Poulenc wrote La courte paille (his last song cycle) for his beloved Denise Duval, I don't believe she ever sang the entire set, or did a commercial recording of any of the songs. Merci! :)

Poulenc is really brilliant. My choir sang "Les Tisserands" in quarantine style. Write this in the search: you will love it for sure!

Would someone more educated than I be willing to translate the interview into English? Thanks!!

    • @robkeeleycomposer

I'm not a professional translator (A level French back in 1977!), but I think what Poulenc is saying is that they are very simple, unimportant songs (unlike 'Tel jour, tel nuit) and they are not written for children to sing, but for Denise Duval to sing to her 7-year old child. The interviewer mentions that Poulenc's 'Gloria' is about to be premiered.
The poems are by Maurice Carême
The song texts are [I think!]
      1. The Angel musicians:
On the threads of rain the Thursday angels play for long time on their harps. And under their fingers, Mozart tinkles deliciously, in droplets of blue joy. For it's always Mozart they go back to every time, the Angel musicians, who, every Thursday like to sing on their harps the rain's sweetness
      2. What an adventure,
A flea, in his car, pulls a little elephant looking backwards where diamonds are shining. My lord, my lord, what an adventure! Who'll believe me, even if they understood? The elephant, absent - mindedly, sucked on a jar of jam. But the flea took no heed, dragging him smiling. My lord, my lord, how this keeps going, and believe I'll go mad!
Suddenly, alongside a fence, the flea melted in the wind and I saw the young elephant saved himself by breaking through the walls. My lord, my lord, one thing is certain, But how will I tell Mummy?
      I hope that's helpful!

    • @genlyai5055
      @genlyai5055 ปีที่แล้ว
