  • Very few drummers have had as strong an influence on music and drumming in the last four decades as Steve Gadd. One of the most well known and highly regarded session and studio drummers in the industry, we are so proud to call him a Yamaha Artist. In this video Steve Gadd sits down with leading UK drumming TH-camr Ben Minal for an exclusive interview in London on his day off from James Taylor’s Tour. In this forty minute interview the two drummers dive into musicality, groove, creativity and how Steve takes inspiration from other players.
    *******************************************************************
Yamaha Drums are proud to announce a partnership with leading UK drumming TH-camr Ben Minal to create a series of interviews with various players. Ben plays drums in the bands Toska and Dorje, as well as making TH-cam videos to inspire his 30k+ subscribers. He is also the co-founder of Musicisum, a platform that has taught over 60k people around the world how to play music. This new series will see Ben meet Yamaha artists based in the UK, or traveling through, to capture relaxed interviews with an aim of getting a true insight of what makes them tick, how they approach their instrument and of course as many tips, tricks and hacks as possible on the way

Thanks for this. One of my drumming heroes, while living in NYC was fortunate to hear and watch Steve play on many occasions.

Wow. I've been drumming for 30 years. I started when I was 19 , I'm now 49. I haven't been playing professionally for 30 years, but on and off for 30. I wish I could turn back time and practice 5 hours a day, which I do now, and totally hone my skills on this craft. Steve has made me realise, don't give up. I will continue my drumming journey until I die.

A true master at what he does and yet very humble, approachable and still wants to grow. Thanks for the inspiration Steve and thanks Yamaha for doing this.

    Interesting interview.
I wish that Steve would write a kind of autobiography or memoirs putting down his insights and experiences for a bigger audience.

Had the pleasure of seeing Steve Gadd play about 3 years ago with one of his bands... such an inspiring, musical and legendary drummer! Really humble and kind man as well, from the looks of it :) Much respect!

Steve wants to be able to play like everybody else, but everybody else wants to be able to play like Steve!

Ask him who is the person he had the most difficult time working with, interpersonally, and how did he make it work…or not make it work.

Great interview but really rubish quality audio for a licensed Yamaha production. A little EQ and compression would have helped.

I never thought I’d get to see Steve Gadd pour a cup of coffee. ☕️

Haha! I've seen worse, like Herbie Hancock eating filmjölk (thick sour milk) in a kitchen here in Sweden.
(Most non scandis would probably hate it, but he didn't.)

same old questions...listen to Steve. He does not care about the drumming - he cares only about music and people.

Why didn’t you ask him what his first kit was?

Poor Steve. He keeps answering the same questions, time after time. Why don't these interviewers read some past interviews first? After the typical questions, the interview does tread into some new territory though, so kudos.

Almost always feel similarly…like, I should’ve been an interviewer. Never too late I suppose.

Maan, preparing some interesting questions would not hurt you. Pouring a cup of coffe for your guest is good manners. Sitting in a way that your dirty sole of your shoe is facing him is considered very impolite, in my culture at least. I would jump to the ceiling being in one room with Steve Gadd...
