    The Heartland Theory was perfectly valid.
    If pre-WW1 Germany/Austria-Hungary/Russia united with common goals, and convinced a few weaker nations (like the Ottoman Empire) to sign up, they could have swarmed all over the world starting with Persia/ME (incl. the Suez Canal), and there would have been little "naval powers" like GB or the USA could have done about it.
    It was *nukes in combination with very long range strategic bombers* (B-29) which made it obsolete in 1945.

    • @doraemon61377
      @doraemon61377 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. But at the same time, long range strategic bombers are not that long range. Long range means more fuel required and even with today modern technology, the vast expenses of Russia mean that it takes too long to reach into the interior.

    "Continued to evolve his theory" or "kept moving the goalposts"? Tomato, to-mah-to. The fragility of Mackinder's theory is underlined by the number of times he had to redefine even its most basic terms to salvage his idee fixe.

    How could Rimland do it when the basic definition of heartland says that it has no access to oceans?

    1914 was the time for a Russian-German alliance. In fact 1878 was already a golden opportunity missed. Germany needed a space to expand and Russia needed the German technology and development. How the Rimland machinations succeeded in bleeding them both out in futile wars fought in the interest of the Rimland 🙄 is beyond me 🤷‍♂

    Something i don't understand about this theory is that the russian empire and the USSR had control of the heartland yet they were not controlling the world island were they? Dosent it make the theory unvalid?

    • @matttaylor2627
      @matttaylor2627 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      pf pf yes Russia dominates the heartland by pure luck (due to their geographical position). However, Mackinder also said that there were two main reasons why Russia wouldn’t be able to control the world despite controlling the heartland. This is because of the 14 countries which neighbour Russia which could invade them at any time (especially after the break up of the USSR in 1991). Also because Russia lacks a warm sea port. This means that although Russia have a vast amount of resources found in the heartland, they cannot export these resources in the winter as the sea freezes. This means that other countries could out produce Russia in the winter months and therefore, wasn’t reliant on Russia. This is why Russia doesn’t dominate the world, especially now that the heartland is dominated by 15-17 countries after the split of the USSR. Any help ?

      @@matttaylor2627 it is helpful thank you (i just saw your answer) ! Therefore for USSR back in the days they would have needed to conquer / dominate Iran ( or Pakistan ?) in order to have access to a warm sea and achieve world domination?

    • @tomasroma2333
      @tomasroma2333 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      matt taylor That may be true for Russia but it doesn’t explain why the USSR didn’t come to dominate. They controlled eastern Europe and still fell apart.

      @@matttaylor2627 Seems to me that Heartland theory is _ipso facto_ defunct if this whole 'today the Heartland, tomorrow THE WORLD!!!' thought process can be shut down the instant you realize the Heartland gives you an abundance of resources and almost no capacity for naval trade some 70-80% of the year or whatever. Was Mackinder really such a hack he couldn't even consider what a country's geographical latitude would do to resource production and transport?
      I'm inclined to say yes, given how ridiculously oversimplified this all seems, even IF you only consider the geographical perspective and not how the world has changed since the 1910's.

    the logic is confusing. Russia already had the heartland and yet it did not prevail, obviously there is some caveat to the heartland theory. Instead of investigating what the caveats are, mackinder decided that the next country that commands the heartland, which supposedly Germany was the best candidate, will simply be able to do what russia couldnt?

    • @Rishi123456789
      @Rishi123456789 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Heartland theory is obsolete now. Sea-based powers (like Britain, for example) are superior to land-based powers (like Russia, for example). That's why Britain was the world's sole superpower from 1815 to 1945, then Britain's successor the United States of America became a superpower from 1945 to today with the United States of America being the world's sole superpower from 1991 to today. So in one form or another, Anglo global hegemony has existed for 207 years.

      I don’t think it does. Because if you look at the eastern flank of the Heartland, its nearest point of enemy land access and contention is China. China and Russia will remain amicable so long as they are authoritarian. But aside from that, an airborne invasion of Yakutia and Chukotka is untenable. In terms of “backing yourself against a wall”, Russia is the country best situated to do so. They have everything in front of them. It is a fortress.
