    Just what I was looking for Thank You. After three years on Guam in the 50's we headed back to the States with a lay over in Kwajalein. Pretty much a landing strip back then but still made an impression of beautiful waters and a wonderful tropical feel. It's on my bucket list to visit with my wife. Thanks for the wonderful "fix" in the meantime. Appreciated, from Pismo Beach California.

      @@cjg999 veteran myself (not-retired), can civilians visit?

    • @cjg999
      @cjg999  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@justinthomas2880not easily, since you can't visit without a sponsor. Someone on the island has to invite you as a guest or you can go for an official work reason. When the commercial flight comes through, people that are continuing on with the flight aren't even allowed off the plane during the stopover.

    My dad was stationed on Kwaj for a couple years in 95-96 with the Army. I was there in 10th and 11th grade. Really cool seeing the little changes that's there now, like those dome houses. Really wish I could go back to visit. I got into Ham Radio there and that helped me with my own military career. Always think back to my time there at the radio club, volunteering at the new post office (opened while we were there) for the holiday's, going to Macy's, the beach, riding my bike all over the island, and the open air theater. Thanks for the island view. Great seeing it again.

    Thank you for this video. I spent one night on Kwajalein in 1957 on a stopover en route to board my Navy ship in Japan. I've always been fascinated by it. Didn't get to leave the base, though. The one thing that stood out was the plane having to make three attempts to get off the runway...an old C-47 or something similar--don't recall. Anyway, I enjoyed your video. Greetings to all of you from my hometown of Arlington, Texas, USA.

    I lived on Kwajalein 1960-1962 when the island had a frontier atmosphere with no TV and a converted warehouse for a classroom before they built George Seitz School junior and high school students. This is the first Kwajalein video which caught the single story duplex house with carports we lived in (left hand side) at 1:54 just as "Family Housing" appeared on the screen which I had not seen in 56 years. The place still looks much the same except there are more facilities (no teen center back then) and the palm trees are taller and more of them. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks for the video of the base. I searched high and low for a cyber tour of the base to no avail. The base is nice. Looks like I'll be heading out that way very soon! I can't wait!

    I lived there for a year and a half. I have a bunch of snorkeling videos. Great place to work, snorkel and dive if you can get there. I miss my friends from Ebeye.

    Nice tour, really different look from 1961 when I was there. Bought first SLR camera at 'Macys' and took many slides. Lived in Coral BOQ.

    I spent three different tours there working at the Kwajalein Police Department, Nov. 1996 to Nov 1998, May 1999 to May 2003 and May 2003 to Jan 20112.This American paradise inside a small great country of Marshall Islands is a well kept secret.

    I spent a year on Kwaj in the early 60's. Great place to be as a kid.
    Why so little activity? Looks like a ghost town until you get to the terminal, then it looks like a convention.

    It looks like it would be a great assignment. Wish I was younger and still active. It has to be a well kept secret. I spent 24 year as a Security Policeman in the Air Force, and never met anyone who was stationed there.

    This is a great upload and thanks for sharing. I'm trying to land a job that will eventually take me out to Kwaj. Quick question(s): How is the scuba diving out there? And how is the fishing? Do I need to charter a boat or is there plenty of surf fishing that goes on? Thanks!

      zaktron, i lived and worked there for 4 1/2 years , Scuba , best ever , visibility is greater than 80 feet in Lagoon , shipwrecks and coral reefs about on outer Banks of 6th through 8th island , and Beijie Island . First world class diving, must be PADI or NAUI certified. They are plenty of dive Master there to become a member of the SCUBA diving club of Kwaj and I ROI Namur Dolphins.

    I was a kid living on Kwaj from 1966 to early 1968 (my school years mid-K through mid-2). We lived in a duplex and I remember it looking like the Family Housing did in this video. We were right next to Ivey Hall, which was a movie theater / auditorium. On Saturdays they had a kids' program so I saw a ton of great movies there like Wizard of Oz and 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Sea. There was no TV nor phone service to the mainland. My mom volunteered at the Micronesian Handicraft shop which was at the at the airport. Women were not allowed to drive and they all had three-wheeled adult tricycles to get around and carry shopping. There was a free taxi service during the day if we needed to go somewhere "far". We had the Surfway and we called the place where you could buy clothes "Macy's". We would have lunch at home every day -- schools and work let out so people could go home to have lunch and then go back. Every day the island siren would blow at 6:00 pm and that was every kid's signal to stop whatever they were doing (usually swimming in the island salt-water pool) and go home.

      Yes, I believe in most cases they can. I know of contractors that have their families on Kwaj but I'm not sure if that is universally true.

      I'm not sure of the process, but there are residents (I know of at least one contractor with a dog) that have pets on Kwajalein.
