I live in a teeny town of 2000 people. The food bank runs out of food within an hour of opening. Because of this, my neighbors and I have come up with a barter system. We trade our overstock. If someone doesn’t have anything to trade this week, maybe next week they will, but they still get to participate. We all rotate to help the gentleman down the street who’s struggling financially, but has been shoveling our sidewalks. That sort of thing. It works great so far, has helped me get to know my neighbors better, and warms my heart. I even look forward to trade day
If you don't have items to trade could you trade pre made meals like sausage casserole or lasagna? It sounds a great idea, my housemates share fruit because it's so much easier to buy a big pack than a couple of Oranges then I swap them for apples.
Love this! I have found that local community pages on Facebook often seem to be a bright spot in a sea of negative on social media, so I really hope this sort of thing will become more common.
You do know the middle class are struggling with food too. The problem is we don’t qualify for assistance so these videos are very helpful for budget cooking.
What middle class? Inflation is crazy right now. Our country is trying to destroy the middle class. We are going to get to the point where its poor and rich.
Good morning - I wanted to emphasize what Christine said, I am deeply involved in the volunteering community and please please please use the resources in your community for food and hygiene items. It makes our hearts so full to be able to lift a burden from our guests for even a moment.

I also want to comment on this video as a man who feeds a family of two. Let's be honest, we all have some pantry items/options in our homes (if not, Dollar Tree/Local Stores have options. I don't happen to have a Walmart nearby). Build it up over time. Just because your dinner may not be "restaurant quality", doesn't mean that it isn't delicious, and nutritious. Social media has people comparing themselves to people that they've never met. Trust me, as long as you are happy in your own life/skin, you'll be fine with your choices. Be you.
Unfortunately I found out that some agencies only serve certain locations. My husband and I opened a thrift store and all the proceeds went back into the community. When people found out that we gave back our donations we're awesome. We turned nobody away who asked for help. We delivered holiday meals to everyone who signed up or we found out you needed help and reached out to them. I've never been happier to bring something to someone who is in need. I was later in a thrift store in town and a woman was asking for help and was turned away because she lived in the next town over. Her tear's didn't break them or hearing she would be on the street homeless. Didn't change their mind at all. I always try to have something I can help people with...real people trying to live in a real world is getting harder. Kindness goes a long way because it could keep someone from being homeless or just the words to keep them fighting.
My local library has a free seed lending library, where I can select 10 different varieties each month March-Nov and request that you save seeds and donate some back to the library for others to use the next season.

The library where I worked accepts "food for fines" in the month of November... This past year, we changed our typical policy of donating all the received food to a local charity to putting it out on carts for ANY of our patrons to take if needed... It was a HUGE hit... I hope we continue to do this going forward! Greetings from Amy in Indiana! HUGE fan of your channel, Christine!
I love how REAL you are in your videos. Your not afraid to share the dirt cheap meals and even information on how to get help getting food for your home like food pantries and WIC. I think that you are amazing for sharing this information!! :) Thank you!
Community food banks / food pantries need to show your videos. So many people get free food, but don't really know what to do with it. These are great ideas for them!
I used to go to a food bank that had shelves in the lobby for people to put back what they didnt want or grab what someone else put back and there was a ton of the same items on the shelves all the time and I'd overhear people putting things on them that they had no idea how to cook something and try to give them some ideas but dried beans and lentils were on those shelves fairly often or cereals like Farina and random veggies like hominey or artichokes. I'd put the processed foods back and basic veggies like corn for people who didn't know how to cook to be able to have and pick up the items i figured were harder for people to use. Im not picky and my grandma taught me how to cook just about everything so taking the things left behind wasnt an issue to me and probably helped out the people who dont have as much cooking skills. They gave a ton of stuff there too, was meant to last a month but I usually got more time out of it. Don't live near that one anymore though. I think they should hand out a little cook book or something, there are usually tons at resale stores for cheap and would help teach people cooking skills so they could come up with more ideas and things. If I need an exact recipe I usually Google it but I learned a lot from my grandma and flipping through an old Betty crocker cook book my mom had lol.
I love making ramen stir fry with peanut sauce. Toss a big spoon of peanut butter into the base you made, leave out the brown sugar, and use some of the ramen water to thin out as needed. Fried egg on top. Yummmm! And you can always use those ramen packets in place of bullion if you're super tight on a budget.
Christine, please do more Budget one large pot pantry dump soups that are ready in minutes. Something nutritious for elderly people without teeth to make ahead, freeze and then eat several times. Thank you!
I used to be a teachers aid at a school I'm north Texas that has a food pantry inside. Not many ppl realize that some schools have their own food pantry all school yr. My smaller town of 8k has its own food pantry & clothing center. We used to get WIC, medicaid, & food pantry but not stamps. Nothing to be ashamed of. I was in college & we rented a room from the in-laws to save money. We paid all of our own bills. Now we have a small home. We're still on a tight budget but God is good. I still love videos like this because food is so expensive & can kill the budget.
I wish you could do a video of a high protein, healthy fats and low carbs... I am being told to keep my carbs to under 100 g a day... my food budget is about 160 dollars a month.
Be sure to create resistant starch in your carbs by cooking the carb and then chilling it 8 hours or more in the fridge. Then reheat to eat. I do pasta, beans, rice, and potatoes this way. Resistant starch has less impact on blood sugar levels.
Watching these videos, with pricing, helps me understand how much more groceries are in Canada. Even with clearance items, we pay far more than in the US.

No. 99 cents and even $1.00 for jam is NOT realistic for me. NONE of the grocery stores around here for miles and miles have these prices NOT even the discount stores. This video is wrong. At my local store the most affordable jam STARTS AT $5.00 and most are closer to six or seven for one small jar of jam. Nothing is truly inexpensive anymore.
Wow! Unfortunately, it is impossible to find low prices like these here in Montreal. Peanut butter here is more like 5.00$ for the small jar while the pancake mix is around 4.00$. Bonker prices here!
Same in Australia. But pancakes are just flour milk sugar and egg. You don't have to buy the premixed stuff. Jam is fruit boiled with sugar and you can find TH-cam recipes for small batches. Where there's a will there's a way. I watch a new Zealand lady, farmers wife homestead. She has very down to earth recipes too. And a Kiwi accent.😂
I was thinking that too! It also doesn't look like it matches their super active lifestyle, so my guess is it is more proof of concept than reality. She can have the apples.
A tub of natural peanut butter that size in my town in Canada around $6-8 an everything else you listed is over double the price too! Great ideas still though. Just consider $6-10/day
I buy and freeze bread all the time. If I find it on sale it gets bought and frozen. We've been married 39 years and no complaint! Lol my kids grew cup that way.
I notice that you don't rinse your canned beans before you add them to your meals. It is normally done to get rid of the salty brine that beans are canned in. Just a thought...
I do not eat pasta. However, my neighbor gets free from a food bank and she shares with me. I help her with chores she would have difficulty in doing like retrieving her mail. Also I get food stamps, and that helps a lot.
If like me you don't have access to great northern beans (never heard of them) what beans would you suggest mixing with the black beans for the bean soup?
@@amandafrederick8308 nope, not on clearance. It's the regular price. I live near Newport News Virginia. I even took a picture of it lol and usually I buy a whole bunch and freeze it

I was thinking that too! It also doesn't look like it matches their super active lifestyle, so my guess is it is more proof of concept than reality. She can have the apples.
Just for a show.
That stonewall pancake mix is amazing but regular price is around $8
I always give you a thumbs up. Hope your fingey continues to heal. 🩷
Hey Christine! I could never do $3 a day. Thanks for sharing 😅
I notice that you don't rinse your canned beans before you add them to your meals. It is normally done to get rid of the salty brine that beans are canned in. Just a thought...
Thank you.
I love your website! I use it all the time ❤
Our local department of health and human services office has a list of food banks in our area in their lobby.
@ 2:56 timestamp - 20 oz. for $16, that's a pretty good deal now!🤣
🤭 I caught that too.

I do not eat pasta. However, my neighbor gets free from a food bank and she shares with me. I help her with chores she would have difficulty in doing like retrieving her mail. Also I get food stamps, and that helps a lot.
Saves a lot of money leaving out sodas and junk food too. Being on a budget can help prioritize.
I’m glad I’m not the only peanutbutter fanatic 😆🤗
. Try Alpino's muesli, It's a wholesome delight that's ready to enjoy straight out of the pack. It is truly one of the best muesli options available!
I like this because it has good ways to use up and rotate out some canned goods. I am not the only one who panic shopped.
That bean and salsa soup is a couple of spices and swaps away from a bean chili.
If like me you don't have access to great northern beans (never heard of them) what beans would you suggest mixing with the black beans for the bean soup?
I’m eating pb&j for lunch today!
same!
I wish I had an apartment to have a pantry in!!! I love with daughter, she can make a bomb meal
The jam can be found at Walmart. It's the only one my son and I can eat at the moment because of allergies
Aldi's loaf of white bread where I live in Virginia is $0.50!
On clearance?!? It's $1.29 here!
Wow don't move up north you'll pay 8$ a loaf 🍞😮
@@amandafrederick8308 nope, not on clearance. It's the regular price. I live near Newport News Virginia. I even took a picture of it lol and usually I buy a whole bunch and freeze it
@@TheWoodburningWarriorit's 1.29 where I live. We are across from WM and they compete with them unfortunately 😢
In NJ, Aldi bread is .89¢
