it is "tradition" kind of. In earlier times dense cities never had kitchens in apartments due to the high risk of fire.
people in huge cities are just used to eat take aways, because its easier for them and always available

Funny thing I've found, with minimalism. It's far more devastating to "lose" something, through theft, breakage, etc. The few things I have mean more. Also, you noted that if someone broke in, they wouldn't find anything - but quite the contrary. They could steal everything you have, in 5 minutes flat. They wouldn't have to weed through any junk ;-)

Looks like you're a space maximalist. Thus, you use the maximum amount of energy to heat/cool your apartment because the displacement of the apartment is at it's highest... and pay the most rent possible for your space demands..
    I don't get it..
You could probably fit all of this into a single bedroom and pay a fourth of the rent and a fourth of the heating/cooling bills.

    • @MetallicReg
      @MetallicReg 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

He does not have everything that he needs. He exports his needs to other places for money. This is a huge difference.
A real minimalist is in full control of his needs and thus scales back while staying able to act on them anytime.
He is more of a consumer with a BnB apartment.
However, no judgment ofc - everyone as they like.

  • @kawaiiavril1658

I think that you live comfortably. The space leaves you area to focus on the things that are important to you. People need to realize it doesn't take a lot of material items to live. In fact not having a lot of stuff will leave you less stressed out and in debt. So your basic apartment is awesome! :)
However, You should focus on buying food instead of eating out all the time. If you don't know how to cook go on TH-cam and look up some of the foods you like to get when you eat out all time. Trust me you will save a lot more money cooking at home than going out to eat all time. Plus you can always fix extra for later. I think it sad when another adult male or female can't cook for themselves.

Loved your video! You are so adorable and your personality is so down to earth. How I came to your video is because I recently quit my job and will be relaunching my virtual assistant business soon. I have been very interested in attempting to live as minimalist as possible and starting today will be getting rid of a lot useless things in my apartment. I feel the decluttering of my home and home office will bring me more focus and energy as I step back into being an entrepreneur again. Thank you for sharing your home with us. I wish you all the best!

For your foam background wall, screw up sheets of the dollar store foam board(light weight) and then glue the foam tiles to that instead. When you move out you can just take it with you and then there only a few small holes in the wall to caulk instead of all that glue to clean up and paint over.

And don't listen to everyone that's saying it's impossible once you're living with a significant other. 🤦🏼‍♀️ There will be changes, but it's all good. My husband and I decided to embrace this journey both individually and collectively as a couple. It's possible. ✌🏼

ETA: I do like that you are lighthearted about it, its adorable. Oh and I have nothing against minimalism, my husband is actually a minimalist ;-). Although I appreciate some things about minimalism, I feel that both extremes are bad. Having too much crap is bad and having an empty home isn't great either. Your place, although neat, just looks unhomely and unlived in. I like my home to feel inviting and comfortable. A lot of these "minimalist" homes feel just absolutely clinical to me. I guess it makes more sense right now because you are a young single guy and live in an apartment, but once you are married with kids and own your own home, you aren't going to want it to feel so clinical. You can still be very minimal and have your home FEEL like a home. I just feel like this is another extreme to hoarding. To me thats not relaxing, it just feels empty. I don't see any little items that say anything about your hobbies or personality. No posters, no paintings, no real color, etc......it just looks like when someone moves out of an apartment and leaves a couple of things behind. I want my home to feel like a home, be inviting, and more importantly make my guests and family feel comfortable and happy.

I used to live like this in the 70's. Not intentionally...I just owned what I needed. Back then no one referred to it as minimalist. They just laughed at me saying I could live out of a suitcase. Got married 10 years later and ended up as a couple in a two story house with basement, all three stories packed full! My second wife's a hopeless packrat. Am I detecting a pattern here? Is it the wives? I miss minimalism. 😕

WOW! Thank you so much for this video, exactly what I needed to see. There's nothing wrong to live in almost empty apartment (of stuff and useless furniture). I saw your fridgefreezer wow, mine looks the same - freezer is empty and fridge almost all the time 75 % empty. Why to keep all, if food stores are near! You get more fresh and you eat less junk food since your fridgefreezer will not provide endless sources of it and it's an effort to go shopping. So you naturally eat less and feel good! I think your cabinets are wonderful, I have similar, maybe a bit more of things - but definitely almost empty - not full. Same with closets. I think your lifestyle is nice, in this apartment, I live in a studio with bedroom and never been happier. My bedroom is as well to sleep, relax and meditate. The living room with tiny kitchen I use as my room for using laptop and eating/making food. Like you say, by showing your house, there's nothing wrong with having half-empty cabinets and fridgefreezer only 25% full - thank you.

I don't think it's crazy. For now yes your place is empty but you do have a plan to add furnishing and a social element to your place so that's good. You might find that allowing more things may inspire you more rather than when your alone. Basically this symbolizes a clean slate and you can make it whatever you want. Go for it Kraig.

I'm new to the minimalist life, but I am married and have a kid and will give you my observations of trying to stay minimal in my situation.
    1. The wife's stuff is her stuff. I'm not going to try and scale back her stuff.....anymore lol. I tried and it just wasn't worth the hassle.
    2. The baby is going to need things, but not excess of things. We don't need 30 bottles we only need about 4-5. We don't need 13 jumbo packs of diapers. We can deal with 1 at a time.
Final Notes: Use the kitchen man. You can be a minimalist and cook. Unless you hate cooking, than do you. Unless-unless you only hate cooking because you don't know how or think you need 50 that you only use when you cook, then you should use your kitchen. Or not bro it's your life.
Love the apartment, beautiful layout and space. Nice and clean.

It wouldve been helpful if you explained why youre a minimalist. Are you just really cheap, do you think youre somehow "saving the planet", or owning a normal amount of stuff makes you anxious? etc etc.. Im really trying to understand your thought process here.

I'm glad I watched this after cleaning my closet and donating two huge bags of clothes! The lack of snacks was the most shocking part! I always have to have a variety of snacks available.

You are not weird, you just prefer your way of doing and living. Our houses have a lot in common. I just have what I need and because my living room is also a workroom I prefer to have space. I also like the idea of having an acoustic wall, I think I will have that too because my ceiling is about 3.10 m high so I need that for the sound. I even do have a special room for my cat (yes he is spoiled) with his Design cat box. Well, the less the better that is my idea. I only make space for simple and nice designed things. Oh, and about your clothing, I think it is smart to bring your clothing to that place to let wash and fold it, you (we) are just efficient with the time. Why would you do that if there are better things to do right? Keep living smart and simple. Great video, thanks.

i'm honestly moving out of my parent's house not fully prepared.. i do not have a sofa, but i do have comfy chairs, i do not have a tv stand.. but i have a coffee table.. I wanted to see up to what extent i can live a "minimalist" lifestyle and after seeing this. i can make it just fine.

I had the same problem with the glue residue from the acoustic foam. Now I'm using picture hanging strips. They hold surprisingly well.

I really like you. The style you make these videos is amazing and so good. Quality.
The minimalism is bit trendy nowadays so its cool if it is just your own style. I think it is good, clean and simple.

I was in my teenage years kind of minimalist but ended up more of a "space effective", small stuff that can do the same as big stuff - but then I too have a passion so that took space as well.

I love it. I'm currently without an apartment (living in AirBnB's mostly). I have scaled down my stuff which is now sitting in the basement of my mothers house until I get a new apartment. But I definitely want to scale back my stuff even more before I move into a new place.

I had no idea you where going the minimalist route. It's funny because I started watching you in 2014 when I started filming weddings, I've been keeping up with your content, but have fallen off like a year ago. Now I discover this channel of yours, and it's funny because I started going the minimalist route like a year or two ago too. I just didn't go as extreme :)

You should put the foam panels onto a sheet of plywood and screw that into the wall. That way each time you move you don't have to deal with all that glue.

I did watch til the end lol. The acoustic wall does look nice in the background. I've lived alone for a long time and now have a temporary roommate. It's nice having someone around sometimes but I still enjoy my alone time as well. It's all about balance as with everything in life ;)
