  • How to remove the window regulator on a Volkswagen Golf MK4 or Similarly aged Bora (or Jetta in the US).
    The plastic guides that lift the glass had broke, they actually had snapped as the inside of the door had quite a few fragments of them lying around, it was cheaper to go to the scrapyard and buy a new regulator, it looks a bit unwieldy a huge tin plate being attached to it whereas on other cars the regulator is unbolted from the door, but thats just the way VW make it, its not really much harder to remove once you know how to do it.
    As for not removing the door latch mechanism, i didnt have the correct spline bit for the bolts that hold the mechanism in place, i bought one of the bits today to remove the seatbelt bolt, the bolts need spline S8 bits to remove them. You can remove the mechanism to avoid breaking the plastic part but its not really an important part.

    Just done this. Useful video. For me, the hardest bit was getting that plastic clip thing that slides into the door lock mechanism back in place. I had to punch out the two plastic 'rivet' centres attaching the clip to the panel, fit the clip into the door lock mech, and then re-fit the plastic 'rivet centres'. They seemed to want to go in from the rear, but that's impossible of course, so I ended up fitting them from the front side, but had to file them down before they would go in, and even then it was a struggle.

    Hi mate good vid. Just quick ?
    I did this repair on my passat it looks exactly the same. Want to do my mates golf was wondering is the latch part the same as I didn't take it off either just poked the plastic bit through. Went back together fine.

    Just done one of these today, mangled the cable with it when the clips broke. Replaced with the all metal upgrade. There was a bit of a 'clunk' on lowering the glass like it was catching something, maybe the wiring loom to the door lock. Fiddled around with things a bit and it went quiet. No mention of how to route the cables here or the need to lube them so they don't corrode and fail a year later (wet british weather and all). Been there, NOT done that before!

      Are the cables themselves not stainless steel on these? Id give the regulator and cables a quick spray with some silicone spray to keep them lubricated. Grease or oil may be inclinded to pick up dirt/grit which could make the mechanism a bit noisy.

    • @simonhare7369
      @simonhare7369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think they are a low grade of stainless, i.e. slight attraction to magnet. Even the o.e.m. cables are like this. One aftermarket set replaced lasted a year, before rusting through and mangling. So I just oil/grease them as a matter of course now.

    hi mate great video, i'm having a lot of trouble trying to disconnect the plug that goes to the latch mechanism, is there clips like the rest or is it just a case of pulling ?

    • @paulmackilligin1754
      @paulmackilligin1754 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been dealing with these VW clips for years and I still struggle with them. You're supposed to pull the little tab on the side (facing you on that plug) DOWN to release the catch on the plug, while at the same time pushing the plug IN to relieve pressure on the catch so it can release. Then you can pull the plug out of the socket.
      This worked a couple of weeks ago on mine, but yesterday when I had to remove it again to finally re-fit the regulator panel, I could NOT get it to release, and ended up pulling bits of the plug off until I could release the catch with a screwdriver. Horrible things. Probably work very well on a test bench when new. To be fair, it would be worse problem if those plugs tended to come loose or let in water, so it could be worse.

    I've removed 10 x 10mm bolts, the 3 winder motor torx screws and lifted the assembly away. I have disconnected all of the wiring connectors & punched in the 2 plastic clips and unlatched the small oval plastic clip below them but the steel inner panel absolutely refuses to budge. What else have I missed?

    • @paulmackilligin1754
      @paulmackilligin1754 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You've missed the fact that the waterproof foam seal all around the edge of the regulator panel tends to stick like glue. I used a wide, flat, flexible knife to part it all the way around, spraying silicone spray into the gap as I went. I was careful, but I still had to replace a section of the foam seal when re-fitting the panel.

    Great instructional video with step by step subtitles... managed to hacksaw through those annoying plastic rivets to save snapping the plastic door connection.
    Window slides up and down nicely... the door locking button sticks up and won't sit flush with the door panel top though... any tips here would be great thanks.

      The snib i think should sit proud when the car is unlocked, it sits level when locked. Perhaps the door lock module that it actuates may need moved up or down a bit

    Is the steel panel moving at all in any direction? It needs to move down just a bit for the track part to clear the door, and also the bit of plastic connecting the panel to the steel panel have they been broken off completely?

    Hi thanks for your quick response. I have changed the CCM. I bought 2nd hand but working order but still not working. How can I check wires ? I think there much be somewhere wire is not connected or attached with ccm. If I open the boot how I find the wires ??thanks for your Time and help.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what i understand after a quick google for "vw golf mk 4 ccm replacement" sometimes frayed wires in the boot can cause issues. Im not sure if this will be the cause of your problem but on this here golf i did the work on it was having central locking issues and was also blowing fuses, i found frayed wires in the rubber grommet that joins the boot to the rest of the car, presumably the up and down movement of the boot over time had caused the wires to break. To get to these wires you need to remove the boot trim, and also the back part of the headlining.
      I would recommend joining a VW forum and posting up your problem there, Someone may have had the same problem as you and might know how to fix it.

    I'm a noob. Please. Help.
    When I was finally reassembling everything, the door lock snib came off ._.
    Do I need to remove the door lock mechanism completely or is there any way to insert that bent metal rod without removing anything?
    I'm afraid of making this worse if I try to remove more things

      How far back did the snib come off, just the plastic end or the metal rod?

    Hi, I replaced the regulated but when I was doing it the door lock rod that goes through the door card came off, so I tried to re assemble it as best I could (correctly) and put everything back together. But now the central locking doesn't work, the other three doors work fine but you have to lock it from the inside now :( HELP

    I just bought golf gt tdi 150. All window are not working. My mechanic told me that change CCM. I did but still not working. Any one help ??

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Im not really very good with VW stuff but the comfort control module sounds a bit like the peugeot BSI, it may be worth checking on google about changing the ccm i think there can be issues with broken wires in the boot can cause issues with the CCM. but id also check the fuses and relays associated with the CCM first especially if its all the windows that are not working.

      I purchased the replacement regulator and motor from a scrapyard it was a used part out of a similarly aged golf, i didn't see any serial numbers when buying the part. However taking a look on ebay here are a few links:

      Jared Cianciolo Yep that looks like a good kit, especially the fact that the fragile plastic parts are replaced with metal. Just watch you get the right one I'm not sure if the 3 and 5 door models have different window mechanisms.

  • @jayharris5460
    @jayharris5460 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would the window regulator not been connected up cause the electric door lock, door light and something else not work? I'm assuming it would.... I gotta do this today as I've had to order new bars, cables, plastic clips and a few other things for it as well, second time working on a Golf, first time was a week ago changing the Flexi pipe (what a bitch that was)

    • @paulmackilligin1754

      Yes, I found that. I had to wait for weather to improve before completing repair and found I had to plug regulator motor back in to get central locking/alarm, etc to work properly.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV

      It was as cheap to get the new part as try to find rebuild bits. Depends very much on the car what parts are easier to find.

      the whole regulator with motor that i bought for this golf cost about £30 used which was a good enough price. There are rebuild kits available with new clips and cables but you have to fit them yourself.
