      It's not just content.
      It's also tone.
      Quite frankly, I think the Burton Batman films (along with the Fleischer Superman) provided a great baseline for tonality in The Animated Series, that Timm largely followed early on (pre-The Adventures of Batman & Robin).
      Most of what Timm's made without the Burton films' Noir and Expressionist Tonality (though, obviously, TAS aimed almost completely for the former rather than latter) feels neotonous and embarrasing.
      These "adult" Batman animated movies all seem to have less tonal gravity than The Animated Series.

    The beauty of BTAS is how they got around the limitations of public television without making it look cheesy , that's what they should do here. Take the show back to the 90's in it's entirety.

    • @misterbadguy7325
      @misterbadguy7325 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Will N Honestly, I've read the early Golden Age Batman stories, and they're not particularly dark. They're pulpy as hell, but the only thing that makes them darker than any given episode of BTAS is that Batman is willing to kill, which isn't really given any weight and is mostly because early-Golden-Age Batman was a lock-stock-and-barrel ripoff of The Shadow. And even that only extends out to to the first year; by the time he had a solo book, he explicitly wasn't a killer anymore. And after that point, you have stories where he fights pirates or goes to Storybook Land, with Robin constantly by his side.

    I know that the censors used to drive Tim crazy but I always felt that they were important. Not because of anything morally but because it forced the creators to be more creative. For example when Bat Girl dies, Tim wanted to just show her fall to her death but the censors said no, so what they did was move the perspective inside of Gordon’s car which improved the scene and made a bigger impact. Also the censors didn’t like punching so the creators put a white flash every time someone was punched, which added to the style of the show. I just feel that not getting what you want is the unpopular key to better creativity. Not always but a lot of times

    This show seems like it'll have the problems that a lot of Spider-Man media does, a fixation with his early career. For me personally, I find the characters more interesting later on once they're surrounded by their established cast. Like how many times do we need to see Peter running late for class, how many different ways do we need to see Batman and Gordon gain each other's trust. They stuff is fine to explore in flashbacks and the like, but I'd be lying if I said that that's the most interesting part of their stories to me. Like this seems to come from a mindset of "Batman is so much better as a loner, the rest of the cast water down the character" and to that I say, not really. In fact Batman's on of the few characters who's improved by a costumed supporting cast, because their familial connections give the character more layers. Without it, he's just a frowny guy in a pointy mask who's good at hitting people.

      Whilst I agree. I’m not going to lie. I am beyond curious to see the various prototypes to his gadgets. Especially the Batmobile. We got a little bit of that in some movies. But I kind of want to see where he starts out and the various designs he comes up with.
      The Batman movie looks like it’s going to show a bit of that as well

      Wow! I agree with everything you've said like 1000%! I always find it maddening when everyone talks about "going back to the origins/roots of the character" and treat it like it's a novel concept. I think this is especially true with Spider-Man (as Marvel seems to be consciously avoiding aging up Peter, ever since like the 2000s). Batman, I feel like at least has had some adaptations that depict him already established at the onset (i.e. DCAU Batman, "Brave and the Bold," the Arkham series, etc.), but there are a lot of early years tales. I do think, however, that the design used for this series would infer a solo Batman (given there not even being a Robin during the original, 1939 depiction), so it would seem tricky to fit a Bat-Family into this one. Personally, I feel that's a bit of a shame, 'cause I, too, love those style Batman stories, where he's got a team of sidekicks and "beyond."

      @@andrewcozzini8259 I think the thing that could help this show stand out from other “Year One”-type Batman stories is it’s style and tone. They’re not just going back to Batman’s origin, they’re going back to Batman’s earliest comics, and, as Bruce said, leaning heavily into that gothic, noir, German expressionism type of storytelling. If you ask me, it’s been a while since we’ve had a Batman story that feels classical and surreal in that 1930’s/40’s sense.

      @Mattboy23 exactly in this show they can now fully embody the dark storys and grittiness that B:tad wasn't allowed to because it was for kids in the end so there was a restriction on how far things could go so death had to heavily censored or even thought this was the first animated DC show to allow violence it still had to be toned down. So just think of this as a what B:tas was but know it's allowed to do pretty much anything.

    Just a pet peeve is when people say Bruce Wayne is a fake persona. It just sounds kind of a dopey statement. I think the Bruce at his core who he is when he’s with the Batfamily or Alfred and wants to build a family that lives up to the relationship he felt when he was safe with his mother and father before knowing the cruelty of the world. Just my personal take, I don’t think BT is incorrect or anything. I just kind of feel like that statement is overused.

    • @galactic85
      @galactic85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Agreed. There is a great storyline in the comics where batman decides ti be batman full time and abandon Bruce Wayne completely. What he realizes is that his entire code of ethics came from his family. Batman is a product of Bruce Wayne. When he realizes this is the case he decides to resume his secret identity.

    However, I'm much more excited to see Bruce Timm onboard, as he was one of the 2 showrunners of the original BTAS.
    And Matt Reeves, of course, since he's the director of the current The Batman movie.
    With these 2 together, especially after having seen The Batman's trailer, already means greatness to me !
    Can't wait to see this series.
    Also, the previous Dark Knight trilogy had animated shorts from either Japan's (Gotham Knight) or China's (Shanghai Batman) best studios to carry the audience into the movies, like what Disney did for Star Wars Vision recently.
    So I guess this time, this whole series will be the animated companion to The Batman ?

    I’m not sure how much of a fan Abrams is of Batman, but his name always gets a project off the ground and of course he goes way back with Matt Reeves who of course directed The Batman and I think is still involved with the Gotham P.D show. James Tucker is a long friend and collaborator with Bruce Timm, but it’s a shame Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Glen Murakami aren’t involved, but it’s not terribly surprisingly.
    I’m cautious optimistic. Nothing can take away what Bruce Timm did between Batman the Animated Series to Justice League Unlimited. Nowadays he’s more hit or miss with massive lows like The Killing Joke and Batman and Harley Quinn. I don’t know why this series would necessarily need to be darker than the original series especially after some of his more “adult” decisions on the movies I just mentioned. Still there is a lot of talent and a lot of big names so I’m intrigued.

    • @UpRoaryus
      @UpRoaryus 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep. LOTS of red flags in the way they are talking about it --- feels like it might be just the artistic styling and look of the original that might be what is the BTAS-ness of it, rather than the thematic direction and story styling that drove the original series. I have concerns that this will be lacking the finesse and artistry that the limitations might have helped create the first time around. Much of the DC animated fare in the more recent years seemed pretty gratuitous compared to the more in depth character explorations of the earlier projects. Hollywood used to be more about telling the story than the formulated-by-the-minute spectacle of action/destruction/fight porn that banks on eye-candy visual thrill rides and shiny explosions to sell as blockbusters now... I knew the BvS movie would be crap when I learned they were already filming scenes before they even had a SCRIPT. This project feels like it might end up being a collage of images assembled to hit certain beats but not having the actual meat of story to feed the imagination...

    Too bad that hack JJ Abrams is involved with this. Otherwise it’s something I’d really be looking forward to.

    As long as J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves are just the backers and don't have any creative influence, I'm on board. Hopefully they'll take a Steven Spielberg approach and stay out of the animators way. Abrams has a history of ruining franchises and I don't want him to mess up this too. He took Star Trek from me, he took Star Wars, hell... he even tried to take Spider-man. Not Batman! Please, never Batman!
    Also, I pray to God they don't go CG (as they were talking about technologies unavailable in the 90s). Another thing to consider was Timm saying more exclusive and diversity. Now I have faith in DCAU presenting these things as they have done so well in previous films and shows, but if you have some studio head (Abrams most likely) popping in to telling writers to add this or that instead of letting them just tell stories with nuance and subtlety we'll have another internet trash fire. People don't like being preached too. I feel that Justice League vs The Fatal Five told a brilliant story about those with disabilities and added diversity without hammering the viewer on the head like they were making propaganda. It was perfect. Story and character first always opens more minds than shouting and calling people bigots.
