    Another great video, thanks. Nothing like a good explainer showing something he knows a lot about. Tip top, a whole world opens up.

    Your bang up hoof knife "The Knife" is made by Anvil. Your nippers are MFC brand (and appear to have been made in June of 2010) and are hand made in the Phillipines. They are excellent nippers. I believe they are the only nippers that have tool steel blades/head with the remainder being stainless. There's a vid on youtube showing the manufacture of these nippers. It's quite interesting. The Liberty nails are made by Kerckhaert. Maybe it'll help anyone who want's to try out the exact tools you use.

    Do you do hot shoeing? Out of curiosity, what is the cost to shoe a riding size horse these days? Draught? Thanks for posting! Jerry

    Excellent show and tell of the tools of the trade, sir! Do you wear steel-toed boots when you work? I expect that having a horse trod on your foot could be most unpleasant.

    Hello Gary,
    You are my favorite blacksmith, and I try to read through your previous answers to not bug you. Here is my question.....You said the rasps get used either 3 times or 4 times.....is 3 or four horses all they are good for? or am I misinterpreting what you are saying?
    Thanks Ken

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ken barker totally misinterpreting! They get used at four stations not on four horses. I thought it was relatively obvious from the video as you can see them in three of the four..

    • @luchism6283
      @luchism6283 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +garyhuston I also thought you were saying the rasp was only good for 3 or 4 uses (hooves or horses). And then as it lost its edge (sharpness) it was relegated to other tasks. I can't tell from your reply if you are being blunt or just have a dry sense of humor.

    Gary, how to you attach the golf balls on your rasp's, I'd like to pinch that idea if you don't mind.. but just wondered if you do anything special to hold them on..Thanks..Digger

    Do you like that better then a anvil . Does it do the same as a anvil just lighter?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's good because it's lighter to carry to stables you can't drive to and it does pretty much the same as an anvil.

    great video did you make the slide out bed in the back of your pickup its a great idea

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      thornwarbler I didn't, it's an American product called a bed slide. I would however make my next one as there is nothing to it but some small channel, a couple of bearings, some aluminium angle and some 1" ply!

    Thanks

    • @garyhuston

      If you are after Farriery apprenticeship you need to go to the Farriers Registration council (FRC) web site and look for ATF's in your area.

    What do you use to sharpen your hoof nippers and knives?

    • @garyhuston
      @garyhuston  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends how blunt they are. For a weekly touch up I just use a 180 grit fibre wheel on a bench polisher. For a more aggressive sharpen I use a Dremel first then a fine file then the polisher
