What good ideas, one thing i would add is a ring on the handle to slide up and lock it from opening.

Well sir, I am just getting started into blacksmithing. I'm sure at least for now that it will be a hobby but it sure is good to see ideas from other smiths so that when I start getting into it that I have great ideas to work from. Good video!
Just getting into blacksmithing, want to add that element to my business. Absolutely fascinating, thank you for sharing. Blacksmithing is making a huge comeback, can't waite till we can offer hand forged hardware ... best thing is I don't see robots ever replacing tradespeople, great furture in trades for young people looking for a rewarding career
Steady hits will work to rivet, even without heat. But heat makes it much easier to do. On the farm we rivet often without heat, cause of fire hazards.

I agree, just little deeper. Or you could say that was the design you were planning on. I’m very impressed by on your welding. I have put a few handles on and they break loose. I need better penetration

This is just a thought about the little "edge" that formed on the domed head. It looked like maybe the stock wasn't square to the tool. The end against your hip looked like it was higher than the end between the jaws of the tool. That might account for the "edge" on the rivet dome.

You are right it should be deeper and I'd loosen the spring a bit
Instead of relieving the dome cavity with a dremel, I've seen some smiths just use a couple hits on a larger size ball bearing after making the initial domes with a smaller bearing.

Yes, previous bloke is right, turn it into a hardy tool, plus take your spring fuller and bring the blocks closer together otherwise the blocks bang around a wee bit too much when they are struck.

I think it goes crooked cuz ur holding it on ur hip and ur hip is higher then ur steal bench and I think that ring around it is because the hole just needs to be a bit deeper. I remember u worrying about bottoming out so u stopped early but probably should've went with ur first instinct and went a tad deeper. But like u said u dont use those rivets any ways was just trying it for the hell of it so either way it still looks good the way they are too.. Thanks for the videos..

I do mine on a hydraulic press. Would your fly press do better? I do my 3/8" rivets cold. I cut the head 1.5 x the diameter. My press is made with a porta power mounted on a large 'c' clamp but I thing your system would work well too. I will give it a try. Thank you for a great video. Like always you got me scratching my head.
Gary what if you made that into a hardie tool that way you could use your free hand to move the bit of bar around like you were saying at the end of the video?
Maybe you can add a Hardy block on one side so you can still use it free hand or in the Hardy hole.

I think that the Rivits were a fraction too long . Thats why you got the lip.
Last video, if i recall was a splendid wide bodied aircraft shooting across a red Sun...I couldn't catch the rivets!

It could be a simple matter of your forge blocks that you welded to your tongues not being square with each other as you hammered I could see them slip side to side out of alignment with each other

Probably just a little bit to much meat in the rivet (length). Slightly thicker steel being riveted and the lip would probably go away. From watching you I reckon the trick would be to form a head on one side of the rivet using the first tool, then use the second tool to form the second side of the rivet, with the tool just keeping the shape of the rivet head intact on the other side.
It looks like it made the mark because when u rest it on ur hip ur hip is higher then the steel ur resting it on so sitting in ur tool crooked and getting struck by one edge of the cube.
You should stamp your initials in the bowls now and personalise your rivets.

What about using a domed rivet driver that fits into a pneumatic air hammer or pneumatic rivet gun (like and air hammer)? We used smaller ones for driving rivets on aircraft, but we domed rivets drivers on the domed side to with a pneumatic rivet gun then used a bucking bar on the other side just drove them flat, but maybe worth a shoot reversing it. Using a bucking bar with a dome in it, and the domed driver on the other side. They come in many sizes.

Would some sort of clamp on your tongs be of help so you don't need to put so much effort into holding the blocks together?

To Gary Huston and others that might know I want to learn how fast swivels are made I know part of it is cast but is it all? The rivet part might be drop forged? I have pictures I can email or text.

Now on the last part of the rivet you could make a stand to hold the ass end of the piece on your hip to rest it on and make it level n so it don't jump to much clamp it to the stand so thank you very much for your great hard work

Think you have too much material sticking out when you start to form the dome. Think there's some rule of thumb for that - wich I can't remember of cause.

The 1,5 x diameter rule sounds familiar. Given the advantage of a sideways look on the work, and of cause the benefit of hindsight, I will, however, dare to say that you had a bit more material than that at hand.
But never mind, You still rank high on my favorits list, and I am more than happy to see you producing videos again. I am especially glad to not hear you talking much about your hand any more. I take that as a good sign, and wish you all the best from one (hobby)smith to another (prof).
