Jon Bernarthol is great as Punisher as well. He is the best version of the character in the second season of Daredevil series and his own series that he gets.
The Punisher first popped up in "Amazing Spider-Man" #129 in '74 , largely as an "anti-hero" counterpoint to Spidey's "no killing" policy. Wolverine's first appearance was also in 1974, but even he only rarely killed anyone in his first several years. Thomas Jane is a PHENOMENAL actor in any role he plays.
2:16 Yep. Normally this would be set in NYC, but it was decided to set it in Florida because Downtown Tampa did not have any residential area, which made it easier to film.
The scene where the Punisher stabs the Russian was actually real. They forgot to swap out the props between takes and Thomas Jane stabbed Kevin Nash with a real knife. They left the shot in the movie because their genuine reactions made it better.
If you're curious, the 1980s punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren and the 2009 one with Ray Stevenson are pretty fun to watch too and their Punishers are pretty different from the other
Early 2000s Marvel is my favorite. Wesley Snipes’ Blade Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (Bryan Singer’s X-Men) Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Ben Affleck’s Daredevil Jen Garner’s Elektra Eric Bana’s Hulk Tim Story’s Fantastic Four Thomas Jane’s Punisher And Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider
Thomas Jane was one of the first versions that fascinated me after John Bernthal. But something I love about this version of punisher. Although it is similar to its origins in the comics, it has an intentionally dependent narrative that does not stop opting for the essence of the character. And Mr. Jane, your version is really very underrated. And he himself felt that it seemed pointless to have done so. It's your discretion, and I love it!!!
Thomas Jane was the 2nd actor to play The Punisher in live action . The 1st was Dolph Lundgren in the 1989 Punisher movie making it the also the 1st R rated Marvel movie. The third actor to play the character was Ray Stevenson ( Ahsoka series) in Punisher: War Zone 2008; 3 years before playing Volstagg one of the warriors three in the MCU THOR films. Actor Jon Bernthal from The Walking Dead also played the character in DareDevil live action series before The Punisher 2017 series which is kind of funny because TWD actor Norman Reedus voiced the Punisher in 2013 animated movie Iron-Man: Rise of Technovore.
"Nosy neighbors!" The pierced one is played by the wildly underrated Ben Foster. He's fantastic in so many movies but almost never gets the spotlight. Try Hell Or High Water, with Chris Pine, or Pandorum, with Dennis Quaid, for some of Ben's best. Ben's also great in Alpha Dog, but that movie is really hard to watch after we lost Anton Yelchin so young 😭😭😭
Fun bit of trivia.. when fighting the Russian, Thomas Jane accidentally stabbed the other actor, for real. I don't remember if the stunt prop failed or they accidentally left a real knife But.. yeah
The actor playing the Russian is none other then WWE legend Kevin Nash. He took it like a pro. What happened was they forgot to switch the prop knife with the real one.
I believe the prop master screwed up and left the real knife in. When I found out about that then rewatched how Kevin Nash just took that like it was nothing, amazing
Yep. They had a rubber bladed butterfly knife so Thomas could practice with it without cutting himself. They forgot to swap the real one with the prop knife during the fight and Kevin accidentally got stabbed. He was a good sport about it though and knew it was an accident. Case of beer later and all was forgiven! Lol
I think the reason why it is rated lower than you thought Mary. Is because of the difficult mix of how the Punisher sets about his revenge. I understand what the director was going for, and it is clever. But the Punisher is a character who would straight out kill the bad guys! Him “punishing” people is what he learns to do! The EXTENDED CUT is superior to this, and is worth checking out as it adds so much more! 🤔
The Waldo actor actually got stabbed during that scene and he continued on like nothing happened. That's some serious dedication! BTW, Waldo is Kevin Nash, so props to him.
I’ll always love this movie and Thomas Jane’s portrayal, even though they didn’t let him make the type of R Rated Punisher movie he originally wanted. I never wanted anyone else as Punisher, though I have accepted Jon Bernthal when he debuted; he instantly crushed the role and has been amazing since.
The Punisher is based on a series of Charles Bronson movies called Death Wish. The reason why Marvel created this character was so that they could show people that their main Heroes wasn’t violent. An activist group was going after Marvel back in the eighties claiming that their comics were to graphic. And their characters were violent. One of the writers wanted to create a character that was supposed to be super violent and was only to be in one issue to show that the main character was not really violent. At that time there was The Death Wish movies these movies were considered to be the most violent movies of the time staring Charles Bronson. The idea was to have The Punisher show up in the comic have a quick fight with the hero and then have a change of heart after the fight over weather he should kill the villain. This obviously backfired when Marvel received lots of request from readers to bring the character back.
In the comics, The Russian (the guy in the striped shirt) is indeed a mutant with superhuman strength. However, he is vulnerable to heat. That's why the boiling water does so much damage to him.
There was going to be a sequel to this movie, but it was made into a video game for the PlayStation 2 called The Punisher (2005), Thomas Jane actually reprised his role as The Punisher. It has appearances from Iron Man, Kingpin, Nick Fury, Black Widow and Bullseye.
My favorite thing about this movie is that every single stunt was practical. The only CGI in the entire movie is the flames on the side of the building at the end.
Thomas Jane is great in the film The Mist. The mist is a good adaptation of a Stephen King story directed by Frank Darabont who did The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, and The Walking dead.
"You Are Not A Nice Person" ... ... ... My favorite part about #ThePunisher is he (usually) finds the "Foot Soldier" that's being mistreated .. .. .. and uses them to topple the empire!! 😂
Fans actually hated Thomas Jane before they learned how dedicated he was to the character, and how much he wanted it to be comic accurate, after that, fans wished he was he played the character in the MCU before Jon Bernthal got casted.
@@CYB3R2K Thomas Jane did the voice of The Punisher in the game. The movie came out in 2004 and the video game was developed in 2004 and came out in 2005. The video game had a trailer for the movie if I remember correctly.
@@CYB3R2K In the game you actually go back to living with Joan and the others. She's taken hostage. It's essentially a rewrite of this movie as The Russian appears in it several times.
The Punisher is inspired by a fictional character called "The Executioner," a Vietnam vet (Mack Bolan) who lost what remained of his family to the Mafia, and he began a war against the Mafia. While the original writer penned 37 novels for the character, it apparently has gone on to where there have been hundreds of novels printed. Near as I can tell, this novel series was also an inspiration for concepts like "Lethal Weapon," which was probably also inspired by a 1973 book / 1974 movie called "The Super Cops," which launched edgy buddy cop shows like "Starsky & Hutch" in '75 (as opposed to by-the-book shows like "Dragnet" or "Adam-12"). "Serpico" is a classic early movie ('73) in this "edgy cop drama" vein.
It actually was supposed to be filmed in a bigger city up North. But Travolta didn't want to commute. It also one of Seethers best songs ever featuring Amy Lee. (The songs objectively much better than the movie and was Waaay more popular than the movie.) I always love watching this movie. Being very familiar with Tampa there's several notable spots I recognize from filming. Unfortunately a few of them, including Frank's loft apartment are gone now.
fun fact 23:00 (not used in the film obviously) Kevin Nash, playing the Russian (i think that was the name) actually got stabbed by a real knife on set. He talked about it a few times in interviews
This movie was an excellent retelling of Shakespeare's 'Othello' with a clever role reversal between the hero and the villain from Shakespeare's original play. The Bard's stories are timeless!
I've always said that Thomas Jane's Punisher was Frank Castles origin story and becoming The Punisher. As for the others versions each is unique and standout in their own ways.
Thomas Jane was such a good Frank Castle, it was a good movie and origin story. It was done really well for a low budget movie and was sad they didn't do anything else with Thomas Jane's "The Punisher"... Then Jon Bernthal came to the plate as Frank Castle in Daredevil Season 2... and absolutely knocked it out of the park. He absolutely KILLED IT. Definitely worth checking out. But must watch Daredevil series to get to him, which is also a great series to watch. :) Awesome reaction.
The Russian (Waldo shirt) was played by Kevin Nash. He played Francis in John Wick. The waitress was played by Rebecca Romijn. She played Mystique in X-Men.
"He needs a better suit..." Sorry Mary, but that's what The Punisher wears 😅 Black on black with a giant white skull for people to shoot at 🤣🤣🤣 Thankfully he tends to wear armor beneath 😉
Frank's wife is played by Samantha Mathis. She was in an amazing 90's teen movie called "Pump Up the Volume", with Christian Slater. Her role in that, started my lifelong appreciation of gothy-looking ladies. You really should check out the movie, when you can. Incredible alternative music soundtrack.
Harry Heck, the assassin with the guitar, was played by country singer Mark Collie. He was mainly popular in the 90's. EDIT: The giant in the red and white shirt that you called "Where's Wally" is literally just called The Russian, and is right out of the comics. Here, he was played by pro wrestler Kevin Nash. He got stabbed for real with that knife. Also, funny you mentioned mutants, because Ben Foster, the guy with piercings, and Rebecca Romijn, the blonde, were both in X-Men. He was Angel in X-Men 3, and she was Mystique, the blue shapeshifter.
In my view, until John Bernthal came along, Thomas Jane was the punisher! Even John Bernthal himself praises this version of the character! I wish you could’ve found the directors cut of this. Good as this version was, the directors cut tells a much better story!
There is an even earlier version of The Punisher, played by Dolph Lundgren, released in 89. It's not great, but still worth a watch for comic fans. There is also a David Hasselhoff Nick Fury movie...
Ah, yes, Nick Fury, the late 90s Marvel/Fox Network made-for-tv movie. I remember that and the Generation-X one fondly. 🤔 Well "fondly" is not the correct word.
I freaking love this movie. I saw it in theaters back in the day and it was just one of those fun movie experiences. It's held up pretty well, too. I love how gloomy the ending of this movie is. All of the scheming and planning went according as planned, he got his vengeance, and there was no weight lifted off of his shoulders. The only decision he made was to keep going on with his life and try to help other people. There was no real victory for him, but he can at least help others with their own issues. He's a broken man and has nothing to lose; by ridding the world of people who ruin lives and families it can prevent other potential future victims. That is a victory in and of itself. It makes for a very neutral ending. It's sad, but there's a silver-lining that can help some in the future, but Frank Castle's happiness is a lost cause.

Jon Bernarthol is great as Punisher as well. He is the best version of the character in the second season of Daredevil series and his own series that he gets.
Bernthal's is the best version - an excellent mix of the charisma of Jane's version with the relentless ferocity of Stevenson's.
"Where's Wally is supposed to be nice" lol that killed me.
If you still want to know what the name of that song its Broken by Seether - ft. Amy Lee, the whole soundtrack is really good, though.
The punisher theme In this movie is so damn 🔥🔥🔥….wish it was used again
If I ever heard those trumpets In Bernthals series I would genuinely lose it
The actress who played the waitress was cast in another marvel movie. She was the blue Xmen villain Mystique.
fun fact the punisher stunt man made a cameo on spiderman 2 when mary jane left the wedding
Find out something new everyday
Thomas Jane didn't have a stunt man in this Punisher movie he did all his own stunts
The scene where the Punisher stabs the Russian was actually real. They forgot to swap out the props between takes and Thomas Jane stabbed Kevin Nash with a real knife. They left the shot in the movie because their genuine reactions made it better.
@@yoga_bear. Thomas Jane and Kevin Nash are badasses lol 😆
@@mikemckague9506 Yup. It was Thomas Jane himself in the scene.
That torture scene with the popsicle was also from the original Punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren.
If you're curious, the 1980s punisher movie with Dolph Lundgren and the 2009 one with Ray Stevenson are pretty fun to watch too and their Punishers are pretty different from the other
Early 2000s Marvel is my favorite.
Wesley Snipes’ Blade
Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine (Bryan Singer’s X-Men)
Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man
Ben Affleck’s Daredevil
Jen Garner’s Elektra
Eric Bana’s Hulk
Tim Story’s Fantastic Four
Thomas Jane’s Punisher
And Nicholas Cage’s Ghost Rider
I still blame Avi Arad for their failure
Especially on X-Men 3, Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four
"Nosy neighbors!"
The pierced one is played by the wildly underrated Ben Foster.
30 days at night also i think
Fun bit of trivia.. when fighting the Russian, Thomas Jane accidentally stabbed the other actor, for real.
I don't remember if the stunt prop failed or they accidentally left a real knife
But..
They forgot to swap out the knives, I believe. Thomas Jane apologized, and Kevin Nash just asked for a case of beer if I remember the story correctly.
Lol
omg
Highly underrated movie. 10/10 for me since I was 14 and saw it in the cinema.
"We are blessed...." famous last words of the wife in an action movie.
Thomas Jane is my favorite portrayal of The Punisher. Thanks for watching. Have you seen Ang Lee’s Hulk starring Eric Bana?
Mary name dropping *The Expanse* I knew there was another good reason I follow your content!
The guy playing Harry Heck is Mark Collie. A real life musician who's got some really good songs!
The skull emblem is the Punisher's superhero symbol in the comics.
I love this movie so much. The big bridges are for boats to go underneath.
The Waldo actor actually got stabbed during that scene and he continued on like nothing happened. That's some serious dedication! BTW, Waldo is Kevin Nash, so props to him.
In other words, he was accidentally stabbed with a real knife and stayed in character. They were able to use the footage for the movie
Underrated Marvel movie, I loved Thomas Jane as the punisher
I’ll always love this movie and Thomas Jane’s portrayal, even though they didn’t let him make the type of R Rated Punisher movie he originally wanted. I never wanted anyone else as Punisher, though I have accepted Jon Bernthal when he debuted; he instantly crushed the role and has been amazing since.
BTW the neighbor is played by Rebecca Romain who is also Mystic from the Patrick Stewart X-MEN
This is the best version!
Thomas Jane also did the voice over for The Punisher video game for the Playstation.
Such an awesome game too. Brutal finishers.
My favorite thing about this movie is that every single stunt was practical. The only CGI in the entire movie is the flames on the side of the building at the end.
Sometimes a bit TOO practical, as Kevin Nash will tell you.
Thomas Jane is great in the film The Mist. The mist is a good adaptation of a Stephen King story directed by Frank Darabont who did The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, and The Walking dead.
Always a good time with Thomas Jane
Punisher is another Marvel character like Blade that I was introduced too in the 90s Spider-Man animated series.
"Dave's the one with all the metal, and Bumpo is, well I guess you can tell which one Bumpo is" ...
"You Are Not A Nice Person" ... ... ...
My favorite part about #ThePunisher is he (usually) finds the "Foot Soldier" that's being mistreated .. .. .. and uses them to topple the empire!! 😂
"I'm Over It" ... ... No Frank, You're Not ... ... ... It's Your Entire Character Arch!!
If this came out today it’d be loved
Worthwhile Thomas Jane movies:
- The Mist
- The Punisher
- Thursday
- Deep Blue Sea
Fans actually hated Thomas Jane before they learned how dedicated he was to the character, and how much he wanted it to be comic accurate, after that, fans wished he was he played the character in the MCU before Jon Bernthal got casted.
I was obsessed with this movie growing up. The tie in video game was very brutal and even banned in several countries.
I don't think the game is based on that movie
@@CYB3R2K Thomas Jane did the voice of The Punisher in the game. The movie came out in 2004 and the video game was developed in 2004 and came out in 2005. The video game had a trailer for the movie if I remember correctly.
@@CYB3R2K In the game you actually go back to living with Joan and the others. She's taken hostage. It's essentially a rewrite of this movie as The Russian appears in it several times.
Hi Mary hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
thank u, u 2
(The songs objectively much better than the movie and was Waaay more popular than the movie.)
I always love watching this movie.
Kevin Nash just brushed it off too! What a badass!
Thomas jane played a awesome punisher. Wish he came back somehow in future
the best Punisher is the one from the Netflix Daredevil series that's now on Disney+
This is the best live action version of the Punisher in my opinion 🤷♂️
compared to Jon Bernthal?
@@Ashwgun I don't care for that actor 😂
@@mikemckague9506 wow, he's fantastic, and perfect for the role, oh well
This movie was an excellent retelling of Shakespeare's 'Othello' with a clever role reversal between the hero and the villain from Shakespeare's original play. The Bard's stories are timeless!
It's also fun learning that Ben Foster and Rebecca Romijn are in this, since Ben played Angel in X-Men 3 and Rebecca played Mystique
Puerto Rico is like an hour an 30 minute plane ride from Florida.
"I'm Fine ... He's Not" ... *falls*
Punisher is an antihero Mary. Like Blade, Frank Castle isn't afraid to get his hands dirty to keep people safe from scumbags.
Kevin Nash taking a real knife in the shoulder and staying in character.... that's as hard core as it gets.
I've always said that Thomas Jane's Punisher was Frank Castles origin story and becoming The Punisher.
As for the others versions each is unique and standout in their own ways.
Punishers super power is basically John Wicks.. Pure, Undistilled Will Power and Rage.
Thomas Jane was such a good Frank Castle, it was a good movie and origin story. It was done really well for a low budget movie and was sad they didn't do anything else with Thomas Jane's
"The Punisher"...
For anyone confused by her saying Where's Wally, that's what he's called outside of the US. In the US, it's Where's Waldo
"He needs a better suit..."
Sorry Mary, but that's what The Punisher wears 😅
Black on black with a giant white skull for people to shoot at 🤣🤣🤣
Thankfully he tends to wear armor beneath 😉
If you like *Thomas Jane* you should watch *The Mist* It's a very happy fun movie 🤓🤗
