    Moss tents are great tents, hard to find. Either eBay or owner of one. But few will sell theirs...like me. Very well made. A magazine editor years ago put up various tents in his yard in winter, Idaho, and only the Moss was standing at winters end. Find one if you can.

    Of all the thru hiker vlogs I've watched that has to be one of the best animal "encounters" I've seen. Glad you escaped unscathed. You should've held up your arm and added 'hawk whisperer'/ falconer to your list of titles.😉

    Wow! Exciting day - from an innocent bunny to an agressive goshawk! The bunny probably acclimated to humans by those who have given it easy food. The goshawk, however, with an immense indwelling instinct to protect its nest and territory - sees humans as intruders. Even though part of your "conversation" with the hawk was "I don't want your babies" - the hawk's warning call back to you will probably be one sound you will not forget. I've got to give admiration to the bird, however, for its protecting abilities for future generations of its species. Thank you for taking us with you as you anticipated the attack; so glad you wisely used your treking poles in self defense; and truly happy the whole experience is over. Wow! Those of us who watch your videos should certainly appreciate that this is not a Hollywood movie, but that was a real goshawk, giving real goshawk warning calls, and with real goshawk talons! Eight sharp and powerful talons, to be exact....and those birds of prey are certainly extremely "talon-ed" in using their talons! (bad pun, I admit)🙂 All around, impressive 16+ mile hike and video today, 5 Stack, kudos to you!

    That is amazing that you were able to record the raptor attack! Thank you so much for recording it. Very cool to be able to see what you had to do to get through that section. I'm so happy for you that you have made it this far and are so close to completing this trip that's been a dream for so long.

    Oh my goodness! “Holy 💩” was a very appropriate reaction. How Terrifying! 😮
    I’ve seen what damage those hawks have done to people in that area this year.
    You are amazing 5 Stack! This old gal can’t multitask either, plus I have to focus on my feet when hiking 🥾. I don’t have the greatest balance. My luck, I’d be trying to swing my poles in the air, trip, and be eaten by the hawks 😬.
    Carry On! You’ve got this! 👊

    Riveting! Cinematography left something to be desired 😂 but yeah, crazy stuff. I have several observations, none of them particularly helpful:
    (1) Raptor migration counter/bird watcher joke that I thought was awesome back in the 70s: When you count migrating hawks, you stand on a ridge or beach and id the birds as they go by/overhead. Of course, you sometimes see planes. What do we call a plane in such a circumstance? Yep, a “gashawk.” (Hey, I was 7.)
    (2) 6:20. The sudden fear is palpable 😂. Why am I thinking of Dungeons & Dragons or a video game here? Boss fight!
    (3) I once got dive-bombed repeatedly by Skuas on Fair Isle in the North Sea. Not quite as well-armed as a Northern Goshawk, but there were lots of the darn things. Hilarious, but unnerving. You did well, pilgrim!
    (4) Finally, you probably should know the Hawk-counter abbreviation for Northern Goshawk: “NOGO” Yep, NOGO. It’s a great bird to see really. Bird of northern forests. Not easy to see in the lower 48 except in migration.

    I heard the hawk.
    We have hawks in our area but they eat squirrels. 🐿️ We shout words of encouragement to our hawks.
    Great hawk video. It reminded me of the SpaceX video of the rockets.

    I used to have a little bunny that would eat the grass in my garden while I was watering. One evening, I walked inside. A movement outside caught my attention. A hawk had grabbed the bunny. You just needed an umbrella or a branch to deflect the goshawk. Quite an adventure. Happy Trails. Good Luck, Rick

    They may warn all comers about the lions and tigers and bears but they leave out the part about the raptors with sharp beaks and talons plus an attitude. You'll be hiking into the 100 Mile Wilderness in style with those new shoes!

  • @andrea4633

    poor bird, imagine nobody listening to your warning calls and having to attack dozens of hikers every day to keep your babies save

    • @5StackHikes
      @5StackHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      True that. The bird's point of view is quite different. "Why isn't anyone listening to my warnings?"

  • @thecrankyyankee5114
    @thecrankyyankee5114 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Pretty much every thru hiker (nobo, sobo, flip flop) has heard of this hawk and has been warned. The more photos, videos and social media posts that are shared about this hawk and its attacks are not good. If the right person(s) from the EPA pick up on this situation they could shut that portion of the trail down until the babies have left their nest. Do you really want that? Just please edit this video and delete the info about the hawk.

    • @5StackHikes
      @5StackHikes  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think something should be done. As I understand, this has been a problem in other years as well. Not sure of the protection status of this species (endangered, threatened, etc.). That would dictate what role, if any, the EPA would have the authority to play. I think that a trail reroute should be considered regardless.
