S2000 Cabin Filter . The OCD way

- This is something that gets over looked. It’s not the most straight forward job.
Follow this video and I think you’ll be able to do it yourself.
You can of course leave the wiper install and pry the cowl up to access the filter. I prefer not to twist or bend the plastic cowl as older cars this gets brittle and can crack. Also you risk scratching the cowl on the wipers.
I prefer the ocd way, and this is the way we do it on our customers cars.
We've seen some filters that have never been changed. Some 23 years old.

I came up with the 5 mm socket trick back in 2002 and shared the idea on S2KI with others. I've never removed the plastic piece or windshield wipers. Just remove the clips on that side of the car and lift up the edge. I don't use my HVAC much so I'm always surprised how dirty it gets. I think it's a poor placement subject to lots of debris which falls off the windshield. Another patiently, well-articulated video for free, everybody rejoice!
The socket idea is great and something everyone has. We have a bunch of panel tools that work very well. I never like pushing the plastic against the wiper blades invade it marks it up. It isn’t the easier thing for the owner to replace. Most didn’t know they had a filter.

what kalmtraevler said, never seen anyone go thru removing the cowl and wipers. One thing I do is paint a dot on the glass at each end of the wiper so I put them in the same location.
Good idea. I notice 99% of them you can see the mark on the wind shield where they sit.

Suddenly I’m wishing that I’d tried the “just lift up the left side” method first. Got everything done and put together first try no problem as per the video. Fastened the valance all the way across to the driver’s side and noticed I’d lost the last clip in the line. Took it all apart and failed to find the clip. I imagine it fell down into the quarter panel. Moved one of the center clips to the end and when reassembling, cracked the drivers end of the valance. GDI! Be so careful when you Jimmy that valance in and out. It is very tight.
We just had a customer crack their cowl by lifting the corner. The older they are the more brittle they become. The clips are much cheaper and accessible than the cowl.

One question I have a skunk power exhaust with cat , quieter with plus passed the mot, resonates to much could I encorperate the resonator in approx same position to reduce drone , or am I beating a dead cat lol
Nice DIY, I never took off the wiper arms, I just let the plastic cowl cut my hand.

Thanks for the video. I did the replacement about 3 years ago. I bought the car new in 2006 and didn't know it had a cabin filter until I had the car for 13 years! At that time I did not remove the wipers. I currently have a very moldy musty smell coming out of the AC vents. So I will be removing the wipers this time so I can get everything under the vent cover disenfected and hope it fixes the moldy smell.@@LHTPerformance
I was thinking to check that cabin filter someday but i don't even have one in my other car . So i will just learn from this vid. Maybe change it in another 20 years.

I've always just opened the hood straight up, pulled that plastic cover up on the side with the filter and changed it that way - takes 2 minutes and no tools required. No need to remove the wipers or fully remove the plastic cover.
I’ve always been afraid to mark up the cowl on the wiper arms.
@@LHTPerformance ahh I mean I don't even remove it fully at all - just pull up the front side enough to reach in and remove/reinstall the cabin air filter. You can lift that side/corner with plenty of room to reach in there without needing to bend/flex it anywhere near the wiper arms. Actually glad you made this video though because my 'new' AP1 was missing a couple of those small plastic clips and I keep forgetting to install the replacements!
@@kalmtraveler I’ll have to try that next time. I’ve got it down to about 10 minutes but never charge for it. 2 minutes sounds better. Lol.
This has also been my method of replacement, the downside being it can be a real pain locating the tab back into the filter housing plus it usually costs me some of the skin from the back of my hands because I can never be bothered pulling the cowl up far enough 😁. I reckon I'll try removing the cowl next time, it'll appeal to my OCD 'cos I can give the area a good clean at the same time 👍👍. 10 minutes? I'll have it sorted in a couple of hours 😁.
@@Rob.Coleman lol. It’s takes longer sometimes lining up the filter back in the tab. With a super low mileage S2000, we take great care not to leave even tiny marks.
I just did this, it was so much of a pain in the ass that I've put it off since 2014 and 50k miles ago..

Nice DIY, John! I was wondering if those little blue (plastic?) chips on the old filter were broken cowl clips, maybe? I break/weaken the clips to the windshield side on my CR--Z's cowl every time I remove it, so I got a box of them to last me..., well, longer than I'll last. :) Also, good idea on the small socket to free the clips--I've been using that method for years too. Keep up the good work; love the new ride too, BTW.
there's a easier way to do this. you don't have to remove the windshield wipers. other videos show just remove the 4 clips on the filter side and lift up on the lining and you can access the filter. I did it this way too
I had no idea you were supposed to take the wipers off.
Ive been just carefully lifting up the cowl and replacing the filter
I find it easier.
When I 1st bought my S it had a stale odor inside
Replaced the cabin filter - and that odor disappeared
Probably 1st time changed in 50 k miles

It's not that bad and don't take off the wipers. There are better videos on this on TH-cam.
Of course you can lift up just the corner of the cowl and replace the filter. As these cars get older and the plastic is brittle…..it’s better than explaining to the customer you broke his cowl. It just depends how careful you want to be. This is the way I do it to be careful.
