In America eye contact means you’re actively engaged in a conversation, like listening with your eyes and ears. It can seem like you’re uninterested and dont care if you’re looking out the window or at the table, it’s crazy how much cultures differ

Having been raised in America, making eye contact was ingrained from childhood. It's a sign of respect, and shows you are listening. I would agree that too much eye contact between male and female does get awkward.

Rachel's story from 2:16 to 2:50 was so funny. 🤣 These tips apply in America too, except for the eye contact. In America making eye contact is way of being respectful because it means you are paying attention.

Another great and very informative video! Loved it! The staring to the eye situation is pretty similar to the Italian culture so it wasn't that difficult to me once I got to South Korea but I wish I could have watched this video to avoid many mistakes in the past. Thanks for the great content and for the positive energy you always pass by through your video. I wish you a lovely start of the week

“Look at me when I’m talking to you!” How many times did I hear that growing up? 😂 To do otherwise is disrespectful, dismissive. We were taught that ppl who can’t maintain eye contact were shifty, untrustworthy. This is going to be a challenging thing to unlearn.

Suddenly I realize that it's evening time and I haven't had my dose of Rache today! No Prob! Utude and Rache in my ear. Type, Type, Type. Ha Ha Ha, Rache is soo funny. Wait, What? ... Don't look at Rache's Eyes while she is talking to me....Damn Rache! Now I Cant stop staring at you!

I really enjoyed this video! The nuances in another culture are hard to catch in the beginning. I appreciate you sharing this!
You shared how the amount of attention someone gives to while listening depends on the hierarchy placement of where they are. The examples you gave were good but what about in a social setting? Elders and/or ppl older than you? Is it the same way?

  • @bmac6730

Eye contact is important for many things. In America it's taught as a sign of respect. Also eye movements can tell you many things. You can see if someone is lying or isn't being honest. You can also see love and affection. I think what foreigners need to understand is what's acceptable eye contact for strangers. Once relationships are established I think you can dial up the eye contact. For me, I'm always cracking jokes and sometimes I use my words other times I use my face or eyes.

    Pardon me Sir
    But have you heard
    That on your back
    There sits a bird.
At first I didn't even notice,
Thought my eyes were out of focus.
Now I think it's just absurd
    That on your back
    There sits a bird.
(My poem from back a while.)

  • @rxlxviii
    @rxlxviii 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

As for a person listening to your story, I don't think it has to do with hierarchy. It has more to do with how much interest you have in the person or even the story. An older person most likely has experienced more things than you have and while you find your experience novel, the older person may have already experienced something similar so to them it is old news. For example, let's say you graduate from school and start your first job, You are experiencing a lot of new things, but an older person would have already experienced similar things when they started their first job. So to them, it's old news and nothing new. It is hard to get excited about a story that you've already heard or experienced before.
