Just discovered this song 3 days ago from an Alan Doyle mix on Spotify. What a story - the disbelief at being sold out by the government to multinational fishing corporations, the anger of Kelly at his own boat for being a symbol of his lost dreams and dying traditions, the sad resignation of the narrator realising his faith and hard work were not enough to save his beloved hometown. As perfect an image of the confusion and nostalgic patriotism that the collapse of fisheries led to on the East Coast as I've ever seen, all told in a soulful melody that refuses to let you go. As an Atlantic Canadian, this might be my favorite song to depict what happened. And, it's a beautiful piece of music to boot.
This guy is beyond awesome. Saw him Iive, I am in music, this was the classiest, cleanest and most riveting show I ever saw. He had a theme around PEI and his family with art from his sister. I met him after, caught a show with a band member after. Just a moment in your life you will never forget. Buy his album, never look back
Well, there is a guy named Ian Thornley who pretty under-rated as well. Tons of artists in this country that don't get the recognition they deserve. Wayne Nicholson is another under-rated Maritimer.
Lennie. You were a great confirmation for me as a 12 stringer musician in the Detroit area and across the nation from the beginning of the 80's when I first heard you on CBC. My forté fell into what I called Nautical Folk. I recently pulled up your tunes that I loved from those days and found you here! Fabulous content! My goal was playing PEI, Cape Breton Island and Newfoundland back then! NAFTA put a stop to that in the late 90's... Crushed eh. Slammed to the boards. I did make it to play at O'Ryans in Windsor ONT. That was the Katz Meow for me! Thank you for your inspiration. My favorite song back then was Island Clay! I still have the cassette that was recorded for me on that festival broadcast that stoked my interest! I even got to play on CBC three times for promos! Hope to be playing the North Shore of Massachusetts this year! Wishing you the best good sir!! Blessed days to you!
