Selena's importance is more than just music/entertainment. At that time, being "Mexican" wasn't cool, we were at the bottom of the "Latin totem pole". Not only that she was Mexican-American, not Mexican enough for the Mexicans and too Mexican for the Americans. So for a poor "no sabo" kid to grow into a successful star that Spanish-speaking audiences embraced was empowering to a group of people who didn't really have anyone who represented them at that time. True there were other Mexican-American stars before her but that also brings me to point out that at that time Mexican TV/female stars were very Eurocentric with light skin/hair & very flaquita. Selena looked like us; her nose, brown skin, eyes, full lips, dark hair, & curvy body- she was us. Her deal with EMI was originally to record an English album. But it was her father's idea to Jose Bejar to keep building the Tejano fan base that way when the English album came out she would have a built-in fan base to buy the album. All her Tejano success and the mainstream music scene at that time delayed Selena's English release. The studio wasn't sure how to market her to American audiences, she looks exotic and has an exotic name but she's all American. I could go on forever, but Selena showed us we can be whoever we want to be with hard work, practice, and a positive attitude the impossible is possible. It's because of Selena we had the Latin explosion in the late 90's early 2000's.

Selena had albums before 1989 debut album. Selena signed with EMI Latin in 1989. Not 1992.
Good catch. I should’ve been more detailed with my explanation 😅
And the Hollywood walk of fame was in Nov. 2017…
You should watch the video where the interviewer asks “Is it SELENA (pronounced Se-li-na) or SEH-LEH-NA?” And she says “It’s “Se-li-na”!
