Yeah he is now a solid choice for both new and veteran players. Also the ability to basically revert meat spoilage by converting it into morsels and back into meat is incredible when you have many stacks of meat
Other characters ALSO have no noticeable downside. While not TECHNICALLY none, Wendy's, Wolfgang's, WX's, Woodie's and Webber's are simply not an actual threat in any vanilla circumstance. Winona has no drawbacks at all, and can be a powerful lategame character. Wendy's base damage is actually boosted to MORE than the default when she fights alongside Abigail, despite her supposed to do LESS damage. If you're seriously still worried about insanity with Wolfgang's 2X damage multiplier, you're either underestimating its power when combined with armor, or you don't know what the F key is. By the time rain actually falls in earnest, you already have the 100% wetness immunity from the Eyebrella, so WX's downside is irrelevant. Woodie's "curses" are now actually preferable states you can enter and exit at will. Need I say any more? Pigs are near-irrelevant followers with absolutely essential drops. Unless you're going to hunt them, there is no reason to ever interact with them. And Webber has spiders, which are far better followers anyway. You can actually get spider drops even easier than normal as him via spider civil wars. He even has a beard that is better than that of the character who is known for it, Wilson.
I've been really digging turning marble into cut stone. Makes crafting cobblestone roads literally free. Also the logs into twigs made taming a beef super easy after beager chopped down all those trees. Lol
No, I meant marble to cut stone. You can passively grow marble and convert it instead of collecting all the rocks which takes time you can be doing something else. Then craft your cobblestone turf for boss fights or whatever.
Find some statues in the wild and mine them for some marble. Then get an alchemy engine and prototype the marble seeds under the refine tab. Then plant.
Funny Wilson angle is using icky 1 to get a ton of morsels, converting some to eggs and the rest to gold at pig king. Turn the gold to nitre and you can crank out gunpowder SUPER early without setting up a proper meat farm.
I personally would not call it "one of the best". The regeneration is simply too niche to be useful. It is a basically a worse thulecite armor and you also have to look for a boss (that can take a very long time if you are unlucky). The new dreadstone armor is less durable than it's thulecite counterpart - even though the thulecite armour is a lot easier to get. You only need to mine a few statues in order to get it, and it is more durable. (Also the thulecite crown is a lot better than the dreadstone helmet - mainly because it has a forcefield effect that can save you from a stunlock and that makes it great). I personally think that the dreadstone armor is simply too much of a hassle to get, you also have items like the eye mask from the Eye of Terror boss. It's as if saying that the napsack is one of the best items in the game because it can put mobs to sleep - even though pan flute exists. The new dreadstone armor is garbage at the moment and it needs a solid buff to be good. No offense. EDIT: fixed a few typos

Thulecite armor can only be crafted on psuedoscience station.. but dreadstone can just be crafted once and use forever.. you gain like 1% durability in less than 10 seconds when you're low sanity- wearing both makes it even quicker. It has same durability as thulecite crown- also thulecite crown will break but you can just save dreadstone armor easily.. by just unequipping it and wearing it later to repair while doing other stuff- Just because you think it's bad doesn't necessarily make it bad.. its already too good and im not trying to say its the best.. but definitely one of the best armor.. never said its best- So Stop with the bullshit please-

Also finding the pseudoscience station isn't that hard if you know what you are doing, and it also takes a lot less time than fighting a useless boss. You clearly decided to ignore most of my arguments, such as the crown's ability to create a forcefield that can save your life. You also ignored an argument related to other items with regeneration ability - such as the eye mask. Besides, after recent hotfixes you need a pick/axe anyways to even start the fight. Which makes this boss even worse because you have to visit the ruins anyways. Visiting the ruins is a lot more beneficial, because you can craft great items - like the magiluminescence, staffs, thulecite club etc. And you basically HAVE to visit them. Sorry, but your opinion is bad and you are defending a crappy armor set. I laught when i heard that wilson was getting reworked. I tried him after the rework and fell in love with is skill ( simple but useful) and with is sense of humor.
The best part? If you really wanna feel nostalgic you can just remove all perks and only play Wilson like you used to. Tho having to shave more means you get 30 sanity which might as well be a permanent upside.
Some of the crafting recipes were changed from the beta to the live update, so be aware that some recipes might be a bit different in the live release ❤
Shadow courtier is comically bad, one pure horror into two nightmare fuel sounds like an enormous waste of resources. I get so much nightmare fuel that I don't even want to pick it up when I kill shadow creatures, I just take it back to base and leave it in a ever growing pile on the floor so that I'm not littering. Meanwhile to get pure horror you have to go to the ruins to craft a pick/axe, then kill a reasonably strong boss for a small amount of pure horror, then you have to kill Fuelweaver in order to unlock the ability to turn it into nightmare fuel, that's like turning a green gem into three rocks. The rest of the alchemy skill tree looks really good, but holy crap that skill is pointless
It also protects you for 10% from nightmares and bosses that are related and makes you deal 10% more damage against lunar creatures, which honestly makes it even more comically bad, like Cmon, Wigfrid literally deals 25% more damage against everybody and takes 25% less damage from everybody.
Honestly, if you think about it, logs being able to be turned into twigs is HUGE. Twigs are quite annoying to get, having to wait for your bushes to regrow or do some tumbleweed farming, but considering just how easy it is to get stacks upon stacks of logs, you can turn some of those into many twigs very quickly. Some good examples would be the deerclops or bearger method, or even just a friendly Wurt who would gladly nuke the forest for you. Maybe it's just personal bias since I use Twiggy trees, but this is basically that, but way better.
@ArcadeOk I'm assuming it's because less logs drop from them, which is normally why you're cutting trees down, and the fact that cutting them down with just an axe takes a lot more time to accrew said logs, which are done much faster by normal trees. Maybe they just don't know pigmen exist? That or they're a Webber main.
Think they didn't go super drastic with him because he's still supposed to be the main character, and pretty neutral, I think he's a very good pick for newer players now though.
a personal issue i have with wilson's rework is that it seems to be aimed at being all round not too good at anything, which i understand but something i would have loved would have been to allow players to select say a specialized perk category so wilson could say have more hp or starve slower but you have to pick one of those categories, like say three categories like survival, combat and science making things like game changing sanity control at maxed out science but not being locked to it as you can swap it off for some more useful things, however being locked until out of the game or at a science station, stuff like that would have made it a tad bit more confusing yes, but i feel like he really needs something as usually most players will.... die in combat due to most characters being unable to handle being hit more than twice without being barely alive due to scarce healing for new players, die from starving due to a lack of knowledge on food prep and thus starving come winter, die from freezing or overheating from a lack of understanding or preparedness of the seasons and how to keep warm or cold, die from general accidents like letting their campfire go out from the shadow hands, its kinda hard to explain how i used to play vs how i do now and what would have helped me when i did everything, personal preference makes me want to have wilson be a difficult to master easy to get into character where all his abilities makes his gameplay easier but not to the point of making bosses as tedious as say a walrus or something
Wilson just fills his own small niche and doesn't need more, after all if Wilson had the abillity to excel at everything there would be no reason to play other characters, and dying from fighting ordinary mobs sounds like a skill issue tbh, even without crockpot you can just kill butterflies for easy healing. and when it comes to Crockpot dishes your options for healing become incredible, Pierogi(egg, vegetable, meat, filler), Trail Mix(cooked Birchnut. 2 berries, 1 twig), Bunny Stew(1 small meat, 3 ice), Tall Scotch Eggs(1 tallbird Egg, 2 vegetables, twig), Bacon and Eggs(2 eggs, 2 pieces of meat), Butterfly muffin(Butterfly, Vegetable, filler), all of those dishes are extremely accesible and are good at healing you, Farming also provides you with healing sources, even as Wormwood healing is only a Problem in boss fights. Don't starve was always and always will be a game where your strongest Asset is knowledge, if anything, Don't Starve just needs to tell the player more, it's just kind of dumb that you first have to eat something and then read a cookbook to check what Effects a certain dish has on you. Oh and btw before you could make Tall Scotch eggs with literally 2 twigs
I haven't played this reworked Wilson yet, but I am curious. I think he might be useful in early wintertime, with his improved beard, food storage and the ability to change logs into twigs and vice versa.
It's like saying that Willows rework was the best one just because in the earlier version she could burn everything down by accident, yet as the reworked version she isn't particular interesting nor has anything outstanding special. Just because people are considering to play Wilson now doesn't really say much about the quality of this rework. I really like the skilltrees and see their potential but Wilson's is not fleshed out enough.

A neat downside idea, when under 50 percent sanity, researching items gives a random amount of positive or negative sanity. It's not controllable and fits the mad scientist vibe
Don't know why people say not much people play with him, dude has 0 downsides, easily survives winter with his beard and has a bunch of perks... To be quite honest, I think he's one of the best.
I don't like the rework because he takes the idea of WX's customization but without downsides characters have. He is also like Wicker who can turn items into items... except instead of just speeding things up he can remove entire segments of the game with easier access to many vital materials. He is great early game and late game when you kite he is identical to most. He basically went from a good character with no real downsides in return for above average everything to the correct starting character for a world as you can change your character very easily.
in my opnion willison should have gotten a buff and affinity should have been for everyone that way it be a base line update and an upgrade to willson he would also get the best 3rd affinity line so that he has a reason to be mained
Why is Wilson not updated in Don't Starve? I feel like its a missed opportunity I really love playing him in DST with friends, but sometimes I just wanna play the solo
It's hard to even call him average compared to what many of the other characters can do, he's probably sitting around D tier right now. Better than Wes at least.. maybe wormwood. Him being weak isn't even as big of a problem for me as him being uninteresting even post refresh.
Wilson has always been a noob character for newcomers, but he also serves as a basic character if you want to play a simple run as most of the cast are pretty easy and Wes being a challenge character Wilson is pretty average by comparison.
aside from the alchemy the rest are utterly useless No one uses torch other than the 3 first nights and the beard barely gives any insulation at all, the beard food slot might be oke but who carries more than 1 type of food with you? That's on you for failing to manage your inventory Technically they now gave the the moon rock portal a meaning in the game because if u really want to progress or you need a certain material you can just switch to Wilson to craft those and go back to Wolfgang for example (bone crafting is something the game needed for years) As an update its great it fits Wilson it has cool ideas and they don't have a downside, they are not great enough to convince someone to play with him, the only instance I would see Wilson being playable its with more people and him able to craft gears
He actually is great for early game, a lot of his resource transferring can be used to speed things up massively. Including getting the moon rock portal meaning you can switch OFF him into who you want.
its kind of a nothing update for more experienced players, just hoping theres a really sick wilson mod that could change him up, like that one WX mod that changed him completely after his own rework.

I don't like this at all. I get that they want to move the baseline forward to compensate for power creep, but this shouldn't be how. Wilson has always been this "idiot who thinks he's smart" character, a "scientist" that is too ignorant and proud to learn how to do actual science. Giving him actual science-related perks completely dismantles that. If this is meant to be a retcon, it's a very poorly done one.
I respectfully disagree, Wilson is a failed Scientist who thinks he is better than everyone, but not an idiot who thinks that he knows it all, if Wilson was truly an idiot who thinks he's smart, Wilson would just brush off Maxwell's offer as a weird way to scam him and continue blaming the experiments for not working instead of realizing he did something wrong. Even his Portrait screams that he is eager to experiment, including a few quotes such as when Winona examines a think tank and says "always be inventing" My point is, Wilson is dumb, but not that dumb.

I haven't played this reworked Wilson yet, but I am curious.
I think he might be useful in early wintertime, with his improved beard, food storage and the ability to change logs into twigs and vice versa.

It's like saying that Willows rework was the best one just because in the earlier version she could burn everything down by accident, yet as the reworked version she isn't particular interesting nor has anything outstanding special.
Just because people are considering to play Wilson now doesn't really say much about the quality of this rework.
I really like the skilltrees and see their potential but Wilson's is not fleshed out enough.

they aren't just night armors
are you going to sacrifice your head and body spot just for it to repair itself tho? imo it shouldve repaired itself overtime even if you dont wear it and still many people wouldnt use it

A neat downside idea, when under 50 percent sanity, researching items gives a random amount of positive or negative sanity. It's not controllable and fits the mad scientist vibe

1:40its kinda weird its not 1:1(aka from 1->3 and from 3->1) but you will have a lose of 1twig for a reason(also haha funny visual error)
Don't know why people say not much people play with him, dude has 0 downsides, easily survives winter with his beard and has a bunch of perks... To be quite honest, I think he's one of the best.
Tbh even after 800 hours I tried other survivors but I've to this day still only play Wilson
I don't like the rework because he takes the idea of WX's customization but without downsides characters have.
He is also like Wicker who can turn items into items... except instead of just speeding things up he can remove entire segments of the game with easier access to many vital materials. He is great early game and late game when you kite he is identical to most.
He basically went from a good character with no real downsides in return for above average everything to the correct starting character for a world as you can change your character very easily.
Basically Klei changed Wilson from Wes but 2x stronger to a man that crafts
i fell like they should make some of the recipes for transmuting cheaper tho... 3 gems for 1 Gem and 6 Rot For 1 Manure Sounds like Robbery O-o

Why is Wilson not updated in Don't Starve? I feel like its a missed opportunity I really love playing him in DST with friends, but sometimes I just wanna play the solo
It's hard to even call him average compared to what many of the other characters can do, he's probably sitting around D tier right now. Better than Wes at least.. maybe wormwood. Him being weak isn't even as big of a problem for me as him being uninteresting even post refresh.

Wilson has always been a noob character for newcomers, but he also serves as a basic character if you want to play a simple run as most of the cast are pretty easy and Wes being a challenge character Wilson is pretty average by comparison.

aside from the alchemy the rest are utterly useless
No one uses torch other than the 3 first nights and the beard barely gives any insulation at all, the beard food slot might be oke but who carries more than 1 type of food with you? That's on you for failing to manage your inventory
Technically they now gave the the moon rock portal a meaning in the game because if u really want to progress or you need a certain material you can just switch to Wilson to craft those and go back to Wolfgang for example (bone crafting is something the game needed for years)
As an update its great it fits Wilson it has cool ideas and they don't have a downside, they are not great enough to convince someone to play with him, the only instance I would see Wilson being playable its with more people and him able to craft gears

He actually is great for early game, a lot of his resource transferring can be used to speed things up massively.
Including getting the moon rock portal meaning you can switch OFF him into who you want.

its kind of a nothing update for more experienced players, just hoping theres a really sick wilson mod that could change him up, like that one WX mod that changed him completely after his own rework.

I don't like the rework really, because in my opinion it doesn't fit the character. Winona would be better taking part of the new features.

I don't like this at all. I get that they want to move the baseline forward to compensate for power creep, but this shouldn't be how. Wilson has always been this "idiot who thinks he's smart" character, a "scientist" that is too ignorant and proud to learn how to do actual science. Giving him actual science-related perks completely dismantles that. If this is meant to be a retcon, it's a very poorly done one.
I respectfully disagree, Wilson is a failed Scientist who thinks he is better than everyone, but not an idiot who thinks that he knows it all, if Wilson was truly an idiot who thinks he's smart, Wilson would just brush off Maxwell's offer as a weird way to scam him and continue blaming the experiments for not working instead of realizing he did something wrong. Even his Portrait screams that he is eager to experiment, including a few quotes such as when Winona examines a think tank and says "always be inventing"
My point is, Wilson is dumb, but not that dumb.
