Hey guys! My awesome Patron, Alexis commented this AWESOME comment on Patreon (like a week ago because of early access on my Patreon) it SUPER informative so figured I’d share it here (with permission, of course): First, there's nothing wrong with using silicone if they work for your hair. Having said that we need to talk about why many naturals avoid it (I avoid it unless I ran out of my normal stuff lol). Dimethicone (PDMS) is a hydrophobic substance. Meaning it prefers itself and things that don't have a polarity like oils, but hates polar things like water. Your hair has hydrophobic parts. Dimethicone will coat the hair, trapping the moisture inside your hair follicles. Which sounds great. Of course that shine and softness is coming from the silicone, so if someone doesn't normally take care of their hair like you do, their hair could be damaged or unhealthy and you would not be able to tell. You do take care of your hair and haven't damaged it to our knowledge, so you get more benefit from the slip when detangling. And probably shorter wash days. The bad side is that it also prefers ITSELF so if you don't use a clarifying shampoo at least every couple wash days the dimethicone can attach to itself and accumulate, weighing down your hair. So make sure to clarify at some point in the next month lol OK so having said that, gotta talk about a slightly better cousin, amodimethicone. You can find this one in products like Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls, which I still occasionally indulge in if I feel like having poof curls. This silicone has some polarity that is activated under lower pH like when you're conditioning in the shower. Damaged hair has a negative polarity so the positive side of amodimethicone will attach only to damaged hair (it is water soluble) and under the pH of normal hair products it will not be able to attach to itself, reducing the accumulation. You will notice if you compare with dimethicone that it might not have as much slip but will still be soft. You also theoretically don't need to clarify as often because accumulation is minimal.

for me the difference is the overall quality of the conditioner that happens to have silicones. If the quality isn't great the silicones just feels like a weird plastic coating. Good quality product with silicones feels soft and smooth and not coated at all.
We need more videos like this! 🤣 It’s like this No Oil and Butters trend everybody is raving about! It would just help to wash the hair more often and clarify more than once a month if you’re too heavy handed 🙈There’s actually nothing wrong using them 🤷🏾♀️
@@poshniall Yes so true, many of us grow up like this. It took me a second big chop to understand water doesn’t damage our hair strands in the way we thought it would do!😅
The actual trend is called no RAW oil and butters and also it's more of a challenge (the 30-day detox) that is optional. The issue is that some people use oils excessively and simultaneously they are afraid of shampooing their hair and not as frequently as they are supposed to. It's so detrimental having the "oil is a moisturizer" and "dirty hair grows hair" and "don't shampoo that much" narratives swarm the natural hair community.
@@bandaqueenlove9134 I think everyone knows that it’s about the prepooing, sealing and ‘moisturising’ the hair with RAW oils and butter. 😊 But the thing is that’s not the real issue. People are way to heavy handed and the use of raw oils and butters can be problematic. How come people put several times a week products like grease, moisturisers, different gels, leave-ins, edge control, mousse, styling butters and raw oils/butters without washing their hair in weeks. The hair is just sprayed with water or other liquids instead of just washing it properly. It doesn’t make sense. There are a lot of tutorials around where people don’t start with freshly washed or clean hair. Products aren’t really given the chance to work on the hair and this creates buildup over time. Now pair it with oil prepoo sessions and diy masks loaded with lots and lots of oils. No wonder hydration can’t happen. It can’t be washed a way with just one lather of shampoo twice or once a month. To me it’s nothing new to wash and reset the hair regularly and if you look back into the MHM the no oils and butters trend can be comparable. In order to get those strands properly hydrated it needed to be clarified and cleaned properly. The main style was washngos to be restyled every 3 days. This is why people used to use baking soda/apple cider vinegar/clay masks. Now cleansing, moisturising and clarifying shampoos are doing the job before conditioners can work inside the hair.
Yeah, my hair likes silicones and I since I wash my hair once a week it doesn’t bother me one bit. Honestly I’ve never been one to follow the natural hair community with its rules(mainly cause I hate following rules) I did try things the natural hair community way and I found my hair did not respond well so I just did trial and error and found things that worked for me. I discovered that a lot of the products my hair likes have silicone in them. Who am I to disprove my hair of what helps it thrives. Love my oils and butters and now silicone.
as a natural who does everything “wrong” w their natural hair.. i love silicones lol. i love $1 shampoo, grease, and my fav conditioner.. the pantene gold one lol (im sure it’s fully of the cones). if it works, it works! gotta just leave your hair alone is the key for me.
People tend to forget that the job of every conditioner is to coat the hair, the job of the coating is to protect the hair from further damage and make it look shinier and feel softer. Also, silicones are not the only substance that can build up on your hair, natural oils are just as likely to cause build up. There are different types of silicones, ones that are water soluble and even ones that are designed for finer hair. I'm a wavy girl and I definitely prefer to use silicones, at least in a serum form throughout my ends, they help me in the humid climate that I live in and prevent tangling which in itself prevents damage. The ends of my hair are the weakest part and I like to protect them the most. My hair never breaks off despite me using heat regularly and even my stylist complemented me on how healthy it is.
@@user-zx5xw4yw2e Hiii. No problem at all. The serums I are use the Biosilk Silk Therapy Lite and the Elseve /Elvive Extraordinary Oil Serum. For detangling I use a leave in conditioner like Gliss and I prefer to do it on dry hair, as I find that it's more gentle. As for shampoo/conditioner, I switch them up all the time, but the best advice I can give is to get a very moisturizing shampoo/conditioner combo, one that is suitable for everyday (neither too rich or too stripping) and a clarifying/deep-cleansing shampoo. Rotate them depending on how your hair and scalp feel. I like Pantene Aqua Light, Dove Volume Amplified, Yves Rocher Repair and L'Oréal Professionne Vitamino Color as "everyday" products.
Polyquats also build up on hair and in some instances, much worse than some silicones. My curls prefer no cones. If I happen to use a silicone, I prefer the bis-aminodimethicone from a rinse out conditioner only. However, it weighs down my curls. They don’t form ringlets as compared to cone free. In order to compensate, I am very diligent about hot oil treatments, and using hair masques on regular basis. My hair is just as soft, has more body, and the curls are much nicer. Edited: I will use silicones of sorts when I straighten my hair. That’s about all it’s good for really.
As a 4c natural who has to wash her hair weekly (severe scalp issues) with clarifying shampoo so I don’t mind silicones depending on what I’m trying to do. I won’t use silicones if I’m doing a 2 week protective style but that’s not very often so I silicone it up. I use it as a last step normally soooo whatever, I got hair to spare.
After not using silcone for so long, whenever I try a product with them my hair just feels like a synthetic wig. It might be soft and shiny but it feels like plastic. So I dont use them
Fr. There was this huge tub of deep conditioner call silicone and my mom would always use that when she would wash my hair and it just felt.....weird. Soft but rubbery. Didn't like it at all. I'll stick with tgin lmao
I use Carols Daughter Goddess Strength Conditioner and it has cones. 😏 my dirty secret is that I actually left it overnight as a mask (bcuz I was lazy) and left it as my makeshift leave in conditioner-because I never washed it off. Curls were poppin...I know risky but, my hair is doing well. CONES ain't never hurt nobody! Also, your opera voice is on point!
I learned a while ago to just use what my hair likes, regardless of what the natural hair community said. I use grease on my scalp too! Yep, I said it! Whatever works!
Silicones is how I grew my hair out the first couple of times without even a deep conditioner, i.e. Herbal Essence's Hello Hydration (BSL). They have altered the formulation over the years to people please when the anti-silicone saga came out but I very much prefer the original formulation. It also made curl definition with wash n go's possible for me after using one tub of Eco gel, lol. I might try the one you are using. Great review.
Absolutely love! I went back to cones a few years back and have never been without them ever again. I have a million heads of hair in my house to do and nothing detangles better than a conditioner with cones. I swear by it! Oh, that and I went back to using hair grease (Blue Magic). No regrets.
These videos obviously aren't targeted to/for me and my hair type, but I've been watching since your "StarPuppy vs" series and oh my gosh I love you sm 😭 your personality is infectious and I've learnt so so much about a hair type that I do not have and a perspective that I will never experience from a first person point of view, so I'd like to say thank you so so much for being such a fountain of knowledge ❤ your eloquence and way you carry yourself is dazzling and your humour has helped me so greatly on some of my worst days. Absolutely one of my most favourite channels and content creators ❤❤
Creme of Nature Pure Honey Conditioner is my no fail detangler and it has silicone. I will give it up when it stops working for me. I rinse it out once my hair is detangled.
Idk if someone has explained but the reason why they advice that you don't use silicones is because most are not water soluble, meaning you need harsh sulfates which can be drying overtime, so they basically recommend you use water soluble stuff so you use softer shampoos
I find silicones are really nice for a bit but over time my hair feels drier than without. So like, I dont think theyre the devil but also theyre fine in moderation - kinda like sulfates. But yeah it was like a year of silicones before I notice my hair turn shit
Oh damn, I didn't know that avoiding silicones was a thing! I'm glad I didn't get the memo. In between braids, I de-tangle my hair with silicone lube... most effective method I have ever found, and it washes out easy. 🤷♀️
Amika’s products are so good! I used to buy The Kure shampoo and conditioner before they reformulated it and also their Nice Cream cowash that was discontinued (and was silicone free, but worked just as well as their other stuff). My hair always felt and looked great after using their products. I don’t use silicones at the moment but if I was, I would be using Amika 😆
For me, silicones just don’t work out. My scalp is too sensitive and my hair is too close to my scalp to try to avoid contamination. I gave my old products to my mom tho,and she liked them (and the smell).
When I was combing out my locs earlier this year I was using the cheap suave cherry blossom conditioner and loved using it afterwards. Until I decided to upgrade my hair care products and use carol’s daughter and Shea moisture and my hair has been flourishing. But now that I’ve dyed my hair, I’ve been told to stay away from silicones and parabens no joke. so I do
✨✨✨😉 i have been so confused by silicones and why i should or shouldn’t use them! there’s sooo much info in the world! thank you for being super clear i appreciate you!
Dem vocals thoooo 🤩 PSA: Some silicones break down. That means that some of them don’t stay as build up on your hair very long at all. If I remember correctly, dimethicone, for example, breaks down after the fifth use. I could be wrong but I recommend Afobe Atoyebi’s video on whether silicones are bad, she explains it super well. I recommend Curly Chemistry as well, she’s literally a scientist!
After you came out of the shower and I saw those curlssss?! I'm like Got Damn! Silicones looking like the neighbor with the sexy brother in town. Heyyyyyyyy!
Anybody else love their hair care routine then just feel like it’s too expensive, research and try new products and find that while they’re not bad they’re just not as sensorially good as your favs or just me? Like: “I wanna save a little money and get easily available products” VS “Well these products are luscious and makes me enjoy wash day more”
🇬🇧 🙋🏾♀️ Oh my days 🤣 you said "antidisestablishmentarianism" thats a word I haven't heard since the late 80's in 6th form 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💖#Blackadder III 🎤🎶🎵You rock! 💐💐💐
I think since I have a dry scalp and find sulfates to be too stripping, not using silicones works for me. like, idk if my hair is any healthier than when I was using silicone, but my scalp is less flaky.
Before I even knew what the curly girl method was (probably before it formally existed), I cut out silicones because products with a lot of silicone made my 3c, fine hair dry, dull, frizzy as all get out, and didn’t do much else. But that’s me. I don’t think silicones are something to be afraid of, and I think everyone should experiment to see what works for them!
I have a natural hair I have for quite some time since 2010 I absolutely love silicone mix and mix it in with my Henna and a couple other tea’s and my hair is absolutely thanking me for it… Oh and as always I absolutely love her eyes !!!
I have always been skeptical of the natural hair "rules". Even things like only washing afro textured hair every 7-10 days don't always apply. Before I was loc'd, I used to do co-wash'n go every single day, and my hair absolutely loved it. The rules can be a good place to start, but it's really a matter of figuring out what makes your hair happy.
Hi Star Puppy I have actually seen it done. On natrual afro hair, if it's any help to you, the hair comes out looking like thick plasticity and looks fake and artifical, some people apply thin hairods ie curler to form a style. I personally wouldn't recommended as my friend was not to satisfied with the outcome. If you still want to try do a tester on a couple of strains first ok. All the best to you.

Creme of Nature Pure Honey Conditioner is my no fail detangler and it has silicone. I will give it up when it stops working for me. I rinse it out once my hair is detangled.
Girl, your haird is really flourishing!!!
If you don't use a sulfate shampoo, 'cones can build up in your hair.
Wow I never laughed so much at one of your videos, You’ve definitely leveled up your comedy
Idk if someone has explained but the reason why they advice that you don't use silicones is because most are not water soluble, meaning you need harsh sulfates which can be drying overtime, so they basically recommend you use water soluble stuff so you use softer shampoos
When the vocalizing started my family thought it was me on my nonsense again. 😂😂😂🖤🖤
I noticed silicones make my hair feel good initially, but once it dries its hard to moisturize until i shampoo again.
YESSSSSS!!! vocals vocals vocals ❤️😩
5:20 I'm done 🤣🤣😭 I immediately knew what you were going to say 🤣🤣🤣 You win, I hit the bell 🔔 👍🏽
The music she has is unmatched
I find silicones are really nice for a bit but over time my hair feels drier than without. So like, I dont think theyre the devil but also theyre fine in moderation - kinda like sulfates. But yeah it was like a year of silicones before I notice my hair turn shit
Amika is in sephora and a few places around me. Dimethicone is the savior of my skin and hair
Oh damn, I didn't know that avoiding silicones was a thing! I'm glad I didn't get the memo. In between braids, I de-tangle my hair with silicone lube... most effective method I have ever found, and it washes out easy. 🤷♀️
Im proud of fluff nugget ☺ you take so good care of her.
The way my dogs ears perked at the beginning of the video thoooo 😂😂
Amika’s products are so good! I used to buy The Kure shampoo and conditioner before they reformulated it and also their Nice Cream cowash that was discontinued (and was silicone free, but worked just as well as their other stuff). My hair always felt and looked great after using their products. I don’t use silicones at the moment but if I was, I would be using Amika 😆
Cymru am byth!!!
Faaabulous video as always - and I feel the Welsh reference verily did lift her up even higher than usual!
♥️🤍💚
For me, silicones just don’t work out. My scalp is too sensitive and my hair is too close to my scalp to try to avoid contamination. I gave my old products to my mom tho,and she liked them (and the smell).
It’s 3 in the morning, just getting ready for work. Danielle busting out with phantom of the opera has already made my day. ♥️
Silicones are my 4c hair’s friend. It’s when u don’t use a sulfate or clarifying shampoo and that silicone just builds up.
When I was combing out my locs earlier this year I was using the cheap suave cherry blossom conditioner and loved using it afterwards. Until I decided to upgrade my hair care products and use carol’s daughter and Shea moisture and my hair has been flourishing. But now that I’ve dyed my hair, I’ve been told to stay away from silicones and parabens no joke. so I do
How are you not functioning in the world like a Cree Summer and doing all of the voiceover work?!
Totally harmonized with the first 5 seconds of this 😂😂😂
Wow those vocals 😍
The intro vocals TOOK ME OUUUT 🤣🤣 never EVER change!!!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
"Sing for me my beautiful angel, sing for me" 🤣🤣🤣
✨✨✨😉 i have been so confused by silicones and why i should or shouldn’t use them! there’s sooo much info in the world! thank you for being super clear i appreciate you!
You low key have a beautiful singing voice. No, high key. You have a beautiful voice HIGH KEY! 😊
Beautiful vocals
if i wasn't already subscribed i would DEF sub after hearing you burst into phantom of the opera 😍😍
Dem vocals thoooo 🤩
PSA: Some silicones break down.
Love Curly Chemistry!
Danielle you are fabulous girl!!! I just enjoy you so much!!! I just have to join your Patreon now!!!
Gosh I just love ya Star Puppy
Okay high notes!!!! That was so good
Them opening notes ma’am 👏👏🤝
'Cones got a whole leitmotif/theme now 🤣
You can easily find theses products at Sephora online also. That's where I purchase mine.
BRUH. THAT OPENING >>>>>>
🤣🤣, As soon as I started watching you.. OMG! I love you.. You are so funny and talented. Love how you held that Note 🎵
they sell Amika at Sephora!
"OH Hi did not see u come in!" Classic :] "THIS VIDEO IS SPONSERED MY ME. MEEE" :]
After you came out of the shower and I saw those curlssss?! I'm like Got Damn! Silicones looking like the neighbor with the sexy brother in town. Heyyyyyyyy!
Come on tonal angel, pitch perfect queen with this CONE INTRO ✨💗⭐️💗💕💖😍
What a fucking intro 👏🏾
Edit: I just realized she sang the phantom of the opera tune 👏🏾👏🏾
Anybody else love their hair care routine then just feel like it’s too expensive, research and try new products and find that while they’re not bad they’re just not as sensorially good as your favs or just me?
Like: “I wanna save a little money and get easily available products” VS “Well these products are luscious and makes me enjoy wash day more”
LISTEN!!! That control in that, "cones-"!!😍 Come through voice😁😍 but for real.
🇬🇧 🙋🏾♀️ Oh my days 🤣 you said "antidisestablishmentarianism"
thats a word I haven't heard since the late 80's in 6th form 🙌🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💖#Blackadder III
🎤🎶🎵You rock! 💐💐💐
i love your wash and go !!
You falsetto?? is crazy🙆🏽♀️🙆🏽♀️🙆🏽♀️🙆🏽♀️🥰🥰🥰
I think since I have a dry scalp and find sulfates to be too stripping, not using silicones works for me. like, idk if my hair is any healthier than when I was using silicone, but my scalp is less flaky.
voice was magical!!
Updated wash and go routine please
You might be aware now but Amika is much easier to find these days and is available on their website and Sephora
Amika is sold at sephora, i love their repairing masks
17 seconds in. Hits like button. You're the best! I would love a granddaughter like you, someday.
Enjoyed your video although I had to wait until later this morning to comment because of fell asleep. You know I love your singing voice! :-)
My dog came running for your intro. 🤣
....actually the Cones tune sounded awesome 😁💖
Hi Star Puppy I have actually seen it done. On natrual afro hair, if it's any help to you, the hair comes out looking like thick plasticity and looks fake and artifical, some people apply thin hairods ie curler to form a style. I personally wouldn't recommended as my friend was not to satisfied with the outcome. If you still want to try do a tester on a couple of strains first ok.
All the best to you.
Phantom of the Silicones. I’m here for it.
