    Oh my goodness! I am so sad that people have done such ignorant things to you. It makes no sense! I am the Divorced mother of an 18-year-old biracial daughter and it is really interesting how the world views biracial women and how something as hair can give or deny you social currency depending on texture. You are a beautiful young woman with a beautiful spirit and keep doing you!💜

    Joy-el, you're gorgeous inside and out! You are self-assured and you know who you are. Other people's problem is not your own; these men and women are trapped in their insecurity and ignorance; keep moving and remember that you are neither ignorant nor insecure. Thank you for sharing these stories.

    Sis. I feel your pain. Even here in Africa where having natural hair is a lot common, people are still stare at me in a funny way anytime I wear my hair in its afro state. I remember when an old man aggressively pulled my hair to find out if its a wig. I was really mad and shocked. Its really annoying.

    You have gorgeous hair. Thick, beautiful, healthy hair. I have been wanting to try the 4c line. My go to line is mielle organics. My hair is 3c/4a but I definitely have some 4c in the back and I love my kinky, curly, afro textured hair

    I live in Oregon (city right next to Portland) and I big chopped two months ago. I have relaxed my hair since 1981 and am natural for the first time in 40 years. Go to a little convenience store and had just taken my hair out of twists. Cashier says “Wow, I’ve always wished for hair that curly, but then I think… nah.” And like you, I chose to ignore and wished her a good night. People are a trip.
    Thank you 🙏🏽 for helping me so much, and so many others, on our natural hair journeys.

    I think people with afro hair often get more frequent (and bizarre) comments/questions about it if they have light skin. I don't know why but I guess it's because people see it as more "weird" or unexpected, and maybe also because people just feel more comfortable commenting. I look similar to you (type 4 hair, light skin) and I've talked to my siblings (type 3c/4 hair, brown skin) about it - they've definitely not had as many strange interactions about their hair. They haven't had so many people touch it without asking either.

    • @Danity56
      @Danity56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I'm brown skin with 3c/4a hair. Hate when people ask are you mixed with white or Native American. I just roll my eyes and say not that I know of. But of course people persist I am. Just ignorant for people to assume shit like that.

    • @ladonna1902
      @ladonna1902 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Danity56 I'm brown skinned and have the same hair type. I get those what are you mixed with questions as well. But since I'm dark I also get people who don't believe it's my hair. They will ask if I have a twist out, texturizer, or a Jeri Curl.

    • @Danity56
      @Danity56 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @isa_virtual

      Darkskin people get as much weird interactions because of afro hair as light skinned people. If your hair is type 4 they’re gonna overreact regardless.

    You are hair goals! Mine is too thin to be as luxurious as yours, but seeing you embrace your hair is absolutely lovely. I grew up with people telling me I had "bad" hair, and when I transitioned, it was mental as well as physical. And when I big chopped 2 years ago, that was definitely an adjustment. Now I'm growing mine back out and love that you share so much with us.

    Great vid Joy-el :) I feel like kinky coily hair is intimidating and also extremely fetishized. I feel like people that say that Afro hair isn’t good hair lack confidence and hide behind a “societal standard”. When rude people try to insult me, they always try to say something about my kinky hair. I usually laugh and keep walking or laugh and change the subject if I can’t walk away. It’s not that what people say does not annoy me, it’s the fact that laughing at them completely disarms them and it typically makes them look inward.

    Unfortunately, your Sally's Beauty story is not rare! It's bad enough that all of the black hair care products are strategically placed at the back of the store (at least the ones I've visited except the newest one in the Bronx), but if your skin tone starts at olive and goes to dark chocolate, the salespersons won't even speak to you! I don't shop the store. I either order directly from the black owned company or go another store.

At the guy that said "We don't see your kind around here". What did he mean by "Your kind"? Plus those guys making the hand gestures about your hair. I would have told them. My hair is just like a halo right. My hair is heavenly.

    This is the reality of being “different” and “other than” . You are young and prior to your journey of wearing your hair in an Afro hadn’t dealt with these types of prejudice. I encourage you to continue to be you and be different in that other peoples assumptions about you and in some cases their rudeness about your hair, won’t dictate how you feel because you are you. It’s the same to a degree when someone is pregnant, suddenly everybody feels empowered to touch your tummy often without permission. I make comments like “ did you lose something in here? and laugh if someone touches my hair without permission or I touch their hair too! 💕

Well, I felt I had to be the example and learn to love my hair. It took some time, but I did learn to love it. My daughter is now 14 and she wears her natural hair or protective styles. I love that I have been able to help her see the beauty and versatility of our hair. (The next time somebody wants to touch my hair, I’m going to ask if I can touch theirs. Very annoying to say the least. The fact that you were pretty much assaulted over your hair is insane😳 So sorry that happened to you! People made the first 3 yrs of my natural hair journey exhausting at times. Nowadays, I find my hair is no longer the topic of discussion. Probably due to more women wearing their type 4 hair out than before. I love how you rock your natural hair with no apologies! ❤️The more of us they see...the more society & our communities have to get used to the hair that grows out our scalp.

    A removed cousin was summoned to her daughter's school and told that braids, specifically extentions, violated the school dress code. This twice removed cousin is a beautiful girl, now woman, with waist length natural hair. She was NOT wearing extentions. Her mother brought a comb with her to prove that her daughter's braids were completely natural.
    I'm seething right now over this racist trope about CRT (critical race theory) being taught in elementary through high school and how it is affecting white pupils self esteem. BTW, CRt is taught at mostly at the post graduate level. I believe this (CRT) was popularized to neutralize the multi-ethnic BLM which IS NOT RACIST and only seeking to have Blacks not treated like insects!

    Ah man, I feel ya on people touching your hair.
    While people never touch my hair when it's natural (I'm also mixed), they love to touch it when it's in braids. This one man touched my hair in such an intimate way and got all up in my business calling me beautiful and I was so creeped out. I don't get why Black/mixed women are such a target for this type of attention from especially males. In my situation it's always young white men who do it and I just don't get it. I never invited anyone to touch me that way. What's more surprising is that it almost always catches me completely off guard to the point where I never know what to say. One of the guys who did it was very attractive and I realized after the fact that I should've said something but somehow his level of attractiveness made it really hard. Now, so often when I'm out if my hair is in some sort of braids, I wear a hoodie up over my head or a hat lol and try to make myself seem very inconspicuous and tomboyish.

    You are amazingly beautiful. And your eyes are fantastic. I am not mixed race but I look mixed race. I have very green eyes and had med blond hair. Ihis was about 50 years ago at a time when this was deemed odd. I had a mother who had 2C hair and she just refused to help me know how to manage my 3C kinks. Luckily I learned to manage and now feel blessed. I think you are blessed too. These times are just right for the natural hair movement. And I'm loving watching you manipulate your 3C hair.

    Girl... It be killing me how some of these people have this sense of entitlement! And like you said this is not a petting zoo, we are not a rare breed or a rare type of human, we are human beings. And in some cases it could be considered assault where you just come up and touch someone you don't know. I don't even want to say what could happen if the shoe were on the other foot... Smh 🤦🏾‍♀️

    What a shame that normal hair is constant being pointed out. This why I always have my hair in a bun. I dont like random people feeling up on my hair or staring at me its absolutely rude! And they are adults needing this kind of education 🙄 😒
