If your investments consist of dividend paying stocks, you do not sell them. When stock market goes up, you getting your dividends. When stock market goes down, you also getting paid by your dividends. And the crazy thing about dividends is that in most cases dividend payments increase from year to a new year. So, it is like getting pay raises every year. No need to sell off those stocks.
