- The main means of transportation that you will be using is the light rail, which takes you to most of the places you’ll need to get to. In this video I’ll be showing you how to buy a ticket, which stations are important for you and what to do if you come to Jerusalem with a car.

Though we have never met , as a longtime viewer and subscriber , I must say how proud I am of you and how even though your channel continues to branch out to various topics , the true focus has and will always be a touchstone to essential information for travelers heading to Israel. My kids and I visited Jerusalem about 4 years ago, and I loved the light rail system! A few things to note: The light rail can be a little crowded, so you may be a little squashed, but that's okay( things may have changed since Covid ). The line to buy your card at the Central Bus Station can be very long, so we gave up on that and found it easier to buy a day's worth of paper tickets, all at once, at a kiosk that is not in the crowded part of town. There should be kiosks all along the route. People in Jerusalem are very helpful, even if you don't speak Hebrew, and they were always ready to help us when we got lost, which was a lot. Oh! and if at all possible, get a paper map of Jerusalem( as a back up) before you get there, and take it with you everywhere you go. Most of the signs were in Hebrew, and we never could find a map, and unfortunately the Internet at the Hotel, and for our phones, was never working. Once, we got so lost that we got on a bus, just to see where it would take us, and we wound up at the Western Wall! It was a great trip!!

We loved riding the trolley when we were last there in '13. Quite a different experience than when I spent a couple of years in Israel in he early '80s.
What was it like back in the 80s?
@@NorceCodine Well, the whole infrastructure of the country has vastly improved over the past 40 years: roads, trains, design, cleanliness. Israel had made tremendous progress in its first 35 years, but was still very much a work in progress. But to be fair, 40 years ago New York, and many other American cities, were in terrible states, having sunk to their worst nadirs. You wouldn't recognize places like Times Square or Alphabet City if you knew them back in the '70s.

Yess, fairly easily we found free Car parking in down town area in all the city's , town's on both of my Israel trips in 2019. Driving around the country, we were able to offer rides to hitchhiking locals , talking to them was cool.

When they just introduced the Rav Kav, it was pretty useless-it didn't work on half the public transport, and there were many glitches in the buses so it didn't even work in the companies that supported it. This kind of gave it a stigma of being inferior to the transport cards abroad. However, I think that today it's very useful, and definitely worth getting *at the airport* for a tourist. It works with all public transport in the entire country, including long-distance buses and trains, so it's therefore more useful than most cards abroad nowadays.
can you explain something to me. if I want to go from Jerusalem to Eilat I know the ticket can be like 30$ US or so. but if I go one stop it should be less right? so how does the card know how much money to use depending on where I go? do I tell the driver where I go?
@@flightjam Yes, on longer-distance buses you still need to tell the driver, and they will issue a ticket from the Rav Kav's stored value.

I had the hardest time finding a place to buy the Rav card because not all the stores that were able to refill the card actually sold the card. I was in Tel Aviv and was able to finally find a place. I love how it can be used throughout Israel and was relatively easy to replenish. I still have it for my next visit. The card was super convenient and easy to use. Thank you for sharing on the park and rides. I was unaware of them being available.
I know a bus ticket is like 5$ for local but if I go to Eilat is like 30$. how does the card know how much money to use from my card if I have like 50$ worth on it?

I own “Holyland Tours” in South Africa and have visited Israel on average 20 times per year for at least the previous 12 years. My full time occupation is to gather and organize group tours to Israel and whereas I use to visit Israel about every second week I haven’t been to Israel for last 15 months and there is no clear indication when we will be able to visit again as South Africa is on the Red, maybe Black, list as far as Corona virus is concerned.
My system is in withdrawal mode and I long to visit Israel again but at least watching your videos on Israel relieve some of the yearning.

I've always been able to find my way around when visiting Jerusalem. It's just not always the best way to get around. My last visit, I went to Yad Vashem by taxi. In the taxi back to my hotel, I noticed the light rail stopping nearby. Next time I'll know.
Driving has never been a problem, because I don't drive in Israel. If I need a taxi, I will take a taxi. Between cities, the train works best, and the buses are not that difficult if you ask the driver for help.
What's the best way to get from King George/Gershon Agron to the zoo? I need to know for my next visit. I know Israel Railways has a stop there.

you can buy an anonymous Rav Kav for 5 NIS almost everywhere there is an automatic selling machines

Very informative. I'm looking forward to riding the light rail when I visit this autumn. I think you can tell a lot about a city, and even a country, by their transit systems. One thing, though. What do you say at the end when you hold up your hand? Sounds like "yala bye" or something like that. I do enjoy your videos.

I got myself a RavKav card. A tourist needs an anonymous one, and at least at Central Station is wasn’t easy to find the desk to get it from. But it’s handy, as one can have a daily ticket there for 13 shekels, IIRC (in 2018, maybe higher now).

Thank you for this information. I think we paid for the Rav card before since we are not an Israeli citizen. We are a tourist from USA. Every year we visit Israel for 14 days. Rav Card is very convenient.
I think Bayit vaGan hostel is also pretty nice as I was there and there is a LRT station and beautiful view to the forest (if you are on the west side)

It's much cheaper to buy it if you need to use more then there public transportation in a day

I read 'All The Furious Battles' by Irving Werstein and it talked a bit about the settlements and how they secretly trained for battle and found it very interesting. Thank you and God bless.

I have noticed that when the group members buy a cash ticket for the light rail then “English” prompts is available but I use a “Rav-Kav” card and there is no option for “English” prompts on the system when you load credit on your ‘Rav-Kav” card, Hebrew only.

WHen we went to Israel we only rode taxis and tour vans to go to places.. I wish when i return buses and rail systems can go up further north , east , west and south.. and we gonna stay longer....... yahlla bye
Weird question but how you can travel on Saturday when you don’t have public transport on sabbath day? Let’s say u don’t have a car and u have emergency
Emergency services are available on the Sabbath and Jewish holidays.
Taxis still run on Shabbos, just not into the Haredi neighborhoods.
