I dont mind that Turkish people don't speak English. They just seem so open to tourists and humble. It's a beautiful country.

    "How are you?
    - I am Turk"
Sounds like a missunderstanding of the initial question, but is a clever reference to Atatürk's "Ne Mutlu Türküm Diyene" quote meaning the man is actually happy (mutlu).
"I am Turk" can also convey a state of deep inner depression engendered by the physical and intellectual existence within the boundaries of growingly divided country driving towards a hopeless future while being painfully aware of the continued slippage from democracy to autocracy.
    Either way, a profound answer

That's why thanks for your understandings. Besides many young generations tryna lean English, Korean, German, French, Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese and more. Thus I hope we could achieve our goals to be able to speak in so many different countries without losing our identity and mother language knowledge. I saw you in a comment and you were ranting about Turks. When Turks came to Anatolia, they did not lose their language or culture. When they came to Anatolia, they used some Persian words. And they still did not lose their language and continued to speak Turkish. They shared their culture with the people in the lands they conquered, and those who claimed Turkish culture as their own ahaha LoL.

And you should know that there are many people in Turkey who carry European genes. Because the Ottoman Empire.

I would say it's important to know languages other than your home nation but not necessarily English. English is a good bridge language because many countries learn it and it can be very useful in certain situation abroad. The problem is English people dont learn many languages because they know everyone knows or is learning English ha ha so it's also bad. If you visit any county you should try to know it's language in basic form. Just good manners. I wouldn't go to Türkiye and just speak English everywhere 😂 I would make an effort to speak the countries language!

I don’t think it’s sad lol; not everything revolves around the Western world and language is deeply rooted in culture. The benefit to learning English is, as you mentioned, the fact that many countries speak it… but if we’re going by population size Mandarin, Hindi, or Spanish could all also be quite useful. It depends on your goals🤷🏻‍♀️
Also anyone who is an English-speaking tourist should not expect the world to bend over backwards to accommodate them, language included.

As an American military member serving in Türkiye, I will admit that we were living within an artificially created American environment among the Turkish people. We had our military club on the military bases and stores on the military bases for buying food and clothing. I went exploring around the Turkish cities, and I encountered Turkish people who could speak English. They introduced me to others who spoke English until eventually I met the lady who became my wife. It is completely due to my own laziness that I am not fluent with the Turkish language by now. I should have immersed myself completely in the language and the culture for a year without anyone giving me assistance in English.

This is a huge factor holding Turkey back. I lived in Ankara for about 3 and a half years. It is hard to overstate how much this affects the competitiveness of the country. I have witnessed so many misunderstandings and missed connections at conferences, exhibitions, and other international events. It is very frustrating.
Yes. The language is fundamentally challenging for a native Turkish speaker to learn. But other peoples around the world, including Turkic ones, have managed it. I found it much easier to have English conversations in Baku or with people from Central Asia than people in Turkey. It is possible to reach this level, but it takes serious investment. My wife (from Turkey) was shocked when we were in a small village in rural Oman and people there spoke English well. This wasn't a place with tons of resources, but they did teach English early.
Another issue is that many Turkish people are unwilling to to pay the wages to bring proper English teachers to their classrooms. There was a place that offered English classes near me in Ankara and most of the teachers were from Kenya and Nigeria. I would sometimes talk to these teachers when I saw them in the park or around the neighborhood, and it was often hard for me as a native English speaker (with experience around the world) to understand the teachers. I also would see people from Arab countries and only mediocre English skills tutoring giving classes in Turkey. I have no ill will towards these teachers, but I have seen these cases a few times, and not seen effective results from them. Teaching effectively doesn't just happen accidentally because someone speaks English. It takes intention to make a program that works.

Turkiye is a country that has not been colonized or imposed rules on these issues.

    There are a few reasons:
    - The language education system, like that of many other countries, is terrible. Even many English teachers struggle to talk well.
    - Turkey was never colonized, hence there is no history of foreign language supremacy. (Some may argue that the French (19th century) and American culture (second half of the twentieth century) had a colonizing effect, although this was limited to the "educated" people and elites. And it had a more stylistic influence, because most of these people are also bad in English.)
    - The Turkish language is very dominant in every field of life
    - The modern Lingua Franca is unrelated to the Turkish language. They are not from the same family. The syntax of English and Turkish are almost completely opposite.
In English, sentences are written in reverse (from a Turkish perspective).
If the Azerbaijani, Uzbek or even Farsi language would be the current Lingua Franca, Turks would speak it effortlessly.
