What the presentation omitted to mention :
1. The hyped-to-the-skies “Battle of Colachel” was actually just a skirmish between a huge 12000 plus men strong Travancore army and a Dutch naval detachment of a mere 450 men, out of whom just about 150 were Europeans
2. The 450 man strong Dutch naval force arrived at Colachel in 3 ships from their base in Colombo
3. As soon as they landed, heavy rainfall began
4. They set themselves up in a walled compound to sit out the rain. But much of their gunpowder became wet
5. The 12000 plus strong Travancore army arrived and laid seige to the Dutch garrison
6. The Dutch waited for the rains to cease and then spread their wet gunpowder in the open for it to dry
7. The huge Travancore army did not have cannon and were equipped with “melee weapons” such as swords, bows and arrows, clubs, etc.
8. They also had some muskets given to them by the English garrison at Anchuthengu. The English were, at that time, vying to displace the Dutch as the trading partner for kingdoms in Kerala
9. Since the Dutch garrison was hugely outnumbered and since their gunpowder was not ready yet, they decided to wait
10. Meanwhile, knowing that the Dutch had spread their gunpowder in the open, the Travancore soldiers had begun shooting flaming arrows over the low wall in the hope of setting fire to it
11. This shooting of flames continued for days and finally gunpowder that had dried caught fire. The fire quickly spread inside the garrison, causing the tiny Dutch force to come out of the compound and meekly surrender to the huge Travancore army
End of “Battle of Colachel” !
Following the surrender, the Dutch commander agreed to join the Travancore army and modernise it with European weapons and European battle tactics. It was the encouragement given by Marthanda Varma that helped the English to set up base in Kerala and later become Travancore’s masters and rulers.
