Drill sharpening - easy way ? REVISED

  • Drill sharpening has been causing me problems for years and its time I got on top of it! In this video I start by looking at the anatomy of a drill and reviewing the sharpening jigs I've already tried. I want to sharpen drills up 30mm in diameter and need a grinding jig for this. I'd like to make a conical grinding jig for my AR5 T&C grinder, but will likely also make a jig to do 4 facet sharpening - hopefully with a design that is easy to make and simple to use. Let's get started :)
REVISION: I withdrew the original version of this video and edited it to correct a significant error on my part ie showing an incorrect method for using a conical drill grinding jig. While this is not a safety issue, I do not want to misinform others and have revised the video to show the right way to use the device. My apologies for any inconvenience caused.

On the General 825, set the flute stop exactly 1/2 the diameter of the drill bit away from the stone. This sets the 8-12 ° angle for proper drill bit geometry. This is why the foot is slotted. It allows for quick adjustment. Too close and the angle is flat, too far away and the angle is sharp. I adjust this back angle depending on the material I am drilling

Drill dr, you can hear it when it engages the diamond wheel. Then you swing the jig assembly in the grinder hole to split the tip. If you don’t have the instructions download them. I also have the tormek drill sharpener. Very slow so you want to sharpen sooner than later. Still not for large drills. The universal grinder can go even larger but same issues. That jig using a cup wheel should sharpen everything but you will take time setting it up just for one size at a time. A simple 6 or 8 inch bench grinder and skilled hands are the fastest, best answer. Best help, use a sharpie or dykem to see your progress and symmetry.

What I do to gain a deeper relief angle is, Create a second facet. Once I achieve a good cutting edge, I'll advance the bit and grind it almost to the cutting edge. Flip it and grind the same distance on the other side. Makes for a nice relief.

Drill sharpening is something that i am looking to take hand held option out of due to the dreaded shakes ,I am interested in all types of sharpening aids, I am working on a an idea in my head, so far it involves using er32 collet in a square collet holder set at an angle and swept past the wheel, its sort of a hybrid of other sharpening tools, I am glad I found your channel keep up the interesting content

You demonstrate a device you call "this sort of thing". I call it a General 825. In the past, when a bit goes dull, I simply buy another. I have never had luck sharpening bits on any jig. I have over 500 drill bits of all sizes and decided it was time to stop buying new ones and sharpen the ones I have. I set the General 825 up as you show and as the directions commanded. I get beautiful sharpening of most of the bits; however, about 20% end up with a flat head, rather than the 119 degree angle all around. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why that happens, when the next one of the same size comes out perfect. Got any ideas what is happening with this jig? And, by the way, I love your presentations. Keep it up!

Hello Alan, if you google General tools 825 drill bit sharpener manual, there is a chart that indicates how much overhang the drill should have , dependant on the drill point angle setting. I think that you may be clamping too far out of the jig? Non the less, good informative video!

Excellent demonstration. I am curious what your mill is branded as. I have one that branded McLane, but I have found the mill is branded by many names and is made in China with the exception of the spindle and it is made in Taiwan. I bought mine used and it seems to be in pretty good condition for what I paid for it.

I have very poor results with Drill Doctor - drill just doesn't bite into material. I've seen quite a lot of videos explaining proper technique, but no luck... Contrarily - with that jig you were testing last I had a fair amount of success. From your clip, though, I just did not get notion of an offset to pivoting point to create proper clearance angle. Can you please, refer to that part again in your future videos. Thanks.
