I have been down that super upgrade road, too. Tubeless spoked wheels, upgraded suspension, heated grips, and so on. The most important part is to start with a bike that has all the stuff you cannot upgrade, and that has a strong aftermarket and community.
I was looking at the latest Africa Twin so I could get Apple Carplay, but lo and behold there are good-enough aftermarket units available for the moto now for $150. Upgrades win again!

After owning quite a few bikes and now riding the desert sled for almost three years now, i am finding it hard to find another bike to replace this bike with. This bike is just soo good! One of the first DIY mods I did on this bike was converted the stock wheels to tubeless by sealing the rims. Its working fine ! Totally mirror your thoughts!

One big issue with the sled is getting to the air filter is a huge issue. If you don’t plan on riding anywhere dusty, no biggie . If you do, and you need to change it often, it’s a massive disadvantage.
And changing that filter is important. If not, you can wreck your engine. Otherwise, the DesertX is so cool

Your concept is how I toured for a few years on my 2017 Africa Twin happily enough while still hitting the forest service roads....till I wanted to get more radical off road and realized that I could sell my Africa Twin which allowed me to buy a 2015 XT250 with 4K on the clock, and a 2007 Honda ST1300 with 14K on the clock - both effectively pristine and still had cash in the bank. Atlas throttle lock worked fine on both bikes, and Oxford heated grips and wireless after market TPS system on the ST1300 only. I found a gent parting out his ST1300 and bought a formerly $800 corbin seat for $150. The ST1300 tours like a beast - huge mileage days can be pulled down with ease. We are not cheap, we clearly just appreciate good value!

I get this. I'm doing pretty much the same thing on my street triple R. Lacking wind protection and confort, with the fear of dropping the bike (not very cheap spare parts for these triumph) i'm fitting flyscreen with additional windscreen (motoforza touring set) and crashbars together with quickshifter.
I will see the results in a couple of weeks but pretty sure it's gonna be a nice - all around - trackday beast - parking lot driller out of am excellent naked little bike.

    Well done.
You asked the one important question we should all ask ourselves before buying a new bike, or any bike: 'What do I want this bike to do?'
Most of us get far too easily seduced by the marketing hype and magazine talk about all the features this or that bike has. It's the old Keep It Simple ... motto. What do we want or need a bike to do.
By the way, I settled on the Husqvarna 901 Expedition last year when I had to replace my old and trusted K100 RS. I'm surprised not more people include it in their short list. But, heck, yeah it is a very tall bike.

    @neiljarvis8911 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Your ethos on money is good. You are right about bikes too, there is no such
thing as the perfect bike, but in my opinion the futher you go north of 650 cc and 400 lb the further you get away from it. True, really small bikes get intimidated by wind and traffic and lack the power that you think you need, but there really has to be a sweet spot these days around 50 to 75 hp and 500 to 700cc.
If you had been around 70's and 80's bikes you wouldn't have yearned for more engine power, just braking power. Bikes like the Duke 390 are great with less, but most will feel the need to try bigger bikes, some will be happier some won't, some like bigger girls....

I’ve owned my FZ07 since 2016 when I bought it brand new.
Over the last 8 years, I was tempted by so many bikes, a street triple 765, FTR1200, Duke 790/890, and many other bikes but I did the same thing you did, asked “what do I really need this bike to do?”
Most recently I was about to buy a new bike, but when I thought about it, I realized my gripes with it could be solved, and am in the process of addressing them and saving almost 8k by not upgrading to the bike I was thinking about getting.
Instead, im spending some of that saved money on my first track days ever this year 😊

I'm paralleling you here, over in Aussie land where we have bazillions of long distances between pockets of civilzation. I have a Ducati Scrambler Icon - like your bike only different. To transmogrify mine I first made the gearing much taller - 1 tooth bigger on the front, 4 teeth smaller at the back. The bike now does 100kph @4krpm. Neat and still pulls like a buffalo. Rack on the rear with enlarger plate, lower, narrower bars - had to install a janky Chinese radial master cylinder to clear the speedo. Also fitted a cheapo friction cruise control. It's OK but you gotta realise, holding a throttle opening is not as good as controlling actual speed - like my car does. There's a screen with an extender so I really convey the dad-biker vibe. In terms of heated grips, the Icon comes with the wiring for factory ones, but you can use generic grips and get the controller turned on via the Ducati DDS system - the starter button turns the grips on once the bike is running. I'm going with heated gloves though. I also fitted Pirelli Angel GT tyres because of physics - the standard tyres will yeet you into guard rail or worse. Ask me how I know. Oh, a tank bag, horseshoe bag and 40 litre dry bag will get you and your gear to a pristine campsite with everything you could ever possibly need.

I don't think you'll find that a flyscreen does anything for you without creating more buffeting and noise to your head. That said, Dart takes returns even if you try them, so you could order all three sizes and see if anything works. I believe clean air is far superior to anything short of a barn door on the front.

Yes cheap is good @ ten years ago I bought a lightly used and well maintained V Strom 1000 it ran down the road road comfortably and allowed me to travel two tracks and dirt roads with confidence and had forged wheels so the plug kit I carried in tool kit wouldget me out of a jam. Sorry I sold it two years ago. Look at used V Stroms there are plenty of 650s out there which are plenty capable.

For me it came down to the SD or the XR. I wound with the XR because I just love the howl of a 4 cylinder engine, but would love to have both, the SD and XR are similar in many ways, but vastly different in others. And while both look like they got the wrong end of a beating with the ugly stick, the SD kind of owns it; yeah, I'm ugly, and I'm wearing a color that makes it impossible to not look at how ugly I am; where the BMW tries to hide it's ugly (and fails). Good news, you don't need to look at either of them when you're the rider! ;)

0:11 You can thoroughly enjoy yourself touring on any motorcycle that runs, but no amount of mods will turn a "dual-sport" into a "sport-touring" bike.
The next thing you'll be telling us is that you can turn the flotation device under your airplane seat into a boat.

I think this was the most smart and yet obvious choice to do this to the Desert Sled.
For the riding you want to do with it, this definitely will sufficient.
Also, genuine question, couldn't you just buy a set of tubeless wheels & tires as a spare set for the Sled?
I guess that would cost more then what you did now to make them tubeless though, so in that aspect I get it why you chose to do this. 😆

No naked motorcycle is a touring motorcycle. You CAN tour, but you can also put you balls in a vice. The wind will drain you after a coule hours on the highway.

Do you complete your own DESMO services? I have a 2020 with 8600 miles and I'm thinking about getting rid of it due to expensive maintenance costs.

@adamelis7411 I ordered my shims off desmo times and did the belts, it wasn't bad and didn't have to replace shims everything was perfect. Keep your oil change ass some zinc will help if you gonna hear any ticking you're good.
