The beauty of Debussy combined with the serenity and transcendence of orchestration creates a soothing soundscape. More people need to appreciate this.

Brilliant orchestration, indeed. That of Prelude VI sounds quite different from mine, nevertheless it remains in the spirit of the piece. Congratulations to Mr. Colin Matthews for such a remarkable work.

Well done for posting these. Some of them work for me but some don't. Debussy was no mean orchestrator and I think if he felt he could convert them successfully, he would have done it himself. Still, Colin Matthews creates some enjoyable colours here.

I will put in the description another orchestration of the preludes, by Peter Breiner. To tell you the truth, I prefer Debussy's piano works to his orchestral works, precisely because in the latter, it is with greater strength that what makes Debussy qualify as "impressionist". I do not like vagueness of form, and I believe that is what led Ravel to say that if he had time, he would re-orchestrate La Mer.

@@pedrohenriqueprata Absolutely Rique, you are spot on. That's precisely why only some of these orchestrations get through to me.
La Mer was popular in France when it was first performed but the New York critics rubbished it. I think that's why Ravel thought he could enhance it. To be fair, he probably could have. But I still like it as it is.
Any news on posting orchestrated versions of the Scriabin Preludes, I'd really love to hear those. Best regards David A.

@@DavidA-ps1qr The next thing I'm going to upload on the channel will be an interpretation of Scriabin's Preludes Op. 11, but I don't know an orchestrated version of that work. As for La Mer, I think Debussy shouldn't have been too concerned at the time with American criticism. I saw a documentary about Prokofiev's career in the United States and they said at the time that the country's music scene was very provincial, even by Russian standards, although, as we know, as the 20th century progressed things changed radically. The French used elements taken from jazz or other sources from the other side of the Atlantic as exotic things, just as they used traditional Spanish music, the Near East or China, but it would still be a few years before the Americans had their musical voice itself, it seems.

@@pedrohenriqueprata mmmm we could talk about this for a while..........
La Mer premiered in New York in 1907, Prokofiev didn't arrive there until 10 years later. I don't think the Americans were suitably prepared for either.
But it's true, American music was streets behind European at this time and it wasn't until a certain Mr Copland turned up that things started to change. And, boy, did they change.

Some are so idiomatic to the piano that...etc. Quite a fresh insight, and a bold effort, to put it lightly. Possibly more depth could be gleaned from a different director/ensemble. No time wasted listening to this.

Just listen to Danseuse de Delphe. Of course it is brillantly orchestrated but I don’t find the lightness of the piano music. It sounds pretty heavy.

A fine job on the whole, with some bravura passages. But it should not be a substitute for the piano originals.
