I'm guessing you have not read the novel it's inspired by The French Indian War, written by James Finimore Cooper. The character Hawkeye is white, adopted son of Chingachgook. So the portrayal in the movie of Hawkeye is correct from the book.
The characters in the book who were INDIAN (their preferred term): such as Magua, Uncas, Chingachgook, and the Iroquois Sachem were portrayed by Indian actors. Hawkeye/Natty Bumpo/Long Rifle was an orphaned colonialist adopted by Chingachgook. Even if you watched the movie, you would remember the great Russell Means as Chingachgook saying "where are they taking my adopted son?" when Daniel Day Lewis's character Hawkeye is arrested for sedition.
