I just bought a 2000 Durango 5.9l v8 and thought I got a great deal until I tried to go out and start it back up. After thoroughly searching I decided my problem was most likely the crank sensor but I had no idea where to find it. Your video is the only one the shows you exactly what you are looking for. Saved me so much time thank you!

Nice video about the location of the Crankshaft sensor.
However, I wanted to provide an alternate method. I watched your video wanted to get started but quickly gave up when it came to having to rip out the inner wheel well lining. But it irritated me that you had to go through the wheel well. I started investigating and found that you can actually reach the bolts from the top.
#1 Remove the entire Air Filter assembly
#2 Remove the Cruise Control Servo (the wire connector requires that you slide a red tab to the side to unlock)
#3 Pull back all the spark plug wires with a wire or bungee cord
You'll need a 2x2 mirror, flashlight, assorted length extensions (wobble drives/sockets help) , 1/2" socket or 1/4" (6mm) hex bit socket, lots of patience and the ability to work by touch.
Use the mirror to look behind the left passenger side head for orientation and location of the bolts. Shine a flashlight into the mirror to see and illuminate the back side of the head and bolts.
The top bolt is right next to the transmission fluid dipstick tube.
The lower bolt is next to a ground wire (that interferes a bit) which is also connected to the ground wire you remove at the Cruise Control Servo. Figure out which combination of extensions to use. I found it easier to use the 6mm hex bit instead of the 1/2" socket. (the actual size is 1/4" but 6mm is slightly smaller and worked for me. BUT!!! If the bolt is really tight you can potentially strip the head so better to use the right size bit). Unscrew the bolts and remove the sensor.
Installing the sensor is easy but getting the bolts back in requires some patience. I used electric tape and taped the bolt to my hex bit. The lower bolt I was able to start by hand but the upper required me to hold the mirror below the head with my right hand and position the extension with bolt using my left hand. I had an assistant shine the flashlight into the mirror so I could see and position of the bolt and hole.
This method is not exactly easy. It took a few hours figuring everything out but it didn't require me to rip apart the wheelwell lining.
    Good Luck

Thank you for your video on the 1999 dodge Durango. I have a 2000 Durango. We replaced the fuel pump, still wouldn't crank. Then Replaced plugs, still nothing . A friend told us to replace the crank shaft sensor. We looked on internet couldn't find anything showing where it was, or how to do it. I found your video and it has been very helpful. Has saved us time and money. We Appreciate you taking the time to make this video to help others.

Just wanted to thank you for this video. in my case it was a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup with a 5.2 liter. it was horrible to change. In my case the new bosch part didnt seem to line up with the screw holes and I stripped one of the screws trying to get it in. I wound up filing the holes on the sensors bracket then when i got it in it was hitting and scrapping. I wound up bending it and putting it back in and it worked great. My arm is all chewed up from putting it in and taking it out but its in and it works. I got the little plastic clips for the wheel well from pep boys. The video was perfect I took off the ground wire just like you did, On my truck the oil dipstick was in the way. On the second screw farther in, the screw was hitting the engine block on the way out, I had to take the part out and put it back in with an open ended wrench and the screw was really long. I used your string trick to get the wires back up to the top of the engine and as you said there was absolutely no slack. I wanted to make a video of changing the part but i was burned out from changing it, took me all day Saturday and half Sunday. Thanks again

I'd like to thank you for posting this video. I had one hell of a time finding the plug on my 97 Ram until I watched your video. This was a tedious 2hr job. Unfortunately removing splash guard doesn't help with the Ram. So, my only option was wedging my arm between the tranny and cat. Even getting the bolts back on was a challenge. Chrysler engineers really had a fit of brilliance for the placement of this and the distributor.

I was getting the P0300 code and since it was time for a tune up I went ahead and replaced the plugs, wires, and distributor. The code didn't go away and the truck wouldn't restart after driving for awhile. Thank you for the video the sensor was a pain to replace, but the 5.9 runs like a top now!

For those who are planning to tackle this time consuming task... I'd highly recommend using Mopar part #56027870 as aftermarket may not meet the proper voltage parameters. Thus causing misfiring issues. Yes using Mopar is more expensive, but at least you'll have the peace of mind knowing it'll work right the first time. Trust me you don't wanna do this job twice.

Without removing the tire or plastic fender, I changed this sensor from the top, it is about 45 angle, and two bolts 13.
    5.9L durango.
I dont have the air filter housing (that you can remove) as my durango has a tower over carburator and runs on propane only. Then with left hand and short key 13 remove two bolts (first clean around with brush).

Good video man! I'm working on a 2001 Durango 5.9 R/T 4X4. I have found that the PCM was bad. I was't getting signal or voltage to the coil either. Found another PCM, installed it and now starts for 3 seconds then shuts down. Think I'm going to guess Crank Sensor next after I'm sure. It seems my sensor location is the same as yours, and you are right, I couldn't find another video. I really appreciate the video man! Thanks!

thanks for the video it helped me a lot. my 1999 Durango 5.9L had issues when I was driving it would just die after engine cooled down it would run again till it got hot. I did get code no bus and thoughgt it was referring to the ECM so I swapped out the computer and still had problems. after watching many videos on the symptoms I had and after switching out the air idle control valve and the throttle position sensor ( still didn't fix the problem) I was down to this ,so I just now finished installing the part and I'm scared to start it . if this doesn't fix the problem I'm out of options and ideas . I'll try and start it soon just tired of always being disappointed when it doesn't end up being the problem .

Just a suggestion...... your job would have been 100 yimes easier if you didnt have the pass exhaust manifold in your way. From the looks of yours it could need a change anyway. I know not that cheap ($100) but worth it. This is why NO MATTER WHAT if you change your passanger manifold CHANGE THE CRANK SENSOR. Good luck.

You can absolutely get it from the top not too terribly hard you just need a 1/2 inch socket a swivel adapter and A 3 to 6 inch extension you can't see it but you can feel it and if you can work by feel alone then it should be pretty easy for you.

    Great, detailed video!
This issue just happened to me this morning while driving my kids to school. Stalled twice while driving down the road, but started up again right away both times.
The only difference it seems from others having this issue is that my Durango drove great when the engine warmed up and this only started today, and it is bitterly cold here in Wisconsin, and I don't know if I let it warm up enough. Put gas in it last night up to about 2/3 full, and I am wondering if in this instance this could just be a gas issue?
I kind of hope so being as this engine stalling thing seems to be quite prevalent and exasperating in Dodge Durango circles from what I have read on the internet.

How did you turn it with the little space between the bolt and the block? I tried using a 1/2 socket with a universal socket on a 3/8 drive with a couple extensions. It won’t turn with the 1/4th Allen wrench or the 6mm Allen wrench. 97 Dodge Dakota 5.2

  • @Daniel-Weaver
    @Daniel-Weaver 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What is in the distributor cap is the camshaft position sensor. Our 98 was doing the same thing. Start cold and run, then no start warm. Troubleshootmyvehicle.com has a step by step tutorial on a no start,no spark condition. Starting at the coil and working your way back to the 5 volt pulse out of the CKPS. Your method is the way to do it. I looked over the top and from the bottom,NO WAY.There is a video for a Dakota 5.2 and he had already ripped out his fenderwell.

It's much less work to just remove the sensor from the top, it took me less than 5 minutes. Just find the bolts by feel (you will be working blind), and use an 8 inch extension with your ratchet and take them out. They will be either 1/2" hex, or 1/4" allen. Naturally there are wires and hoses in the way, just push them to the side. It may help, depending on your exact setup, to use a u-joint. If enough people request it, I can make a video showing how it's done.

+Eleanor Vargas Our problem with the sensor was when it got hot it wouldn't start. When it cools down it would start. There is 2 sensors, the crank shaft sensor and it's located behind the inner fender well on the passenger side. On the bell housing. The other sensor that will cause you the same problem, is the primary coil sensor. And it's located inside the distributor cap underneath the rotor. That's the problem I had. I had to replace both sensors.
