    I recall Mel the Terrain Tutor using expanding foam (the yellow stuff) in a video a few years back. I'd have to go back and find the video again to remember what his final opinion was but I think he had the same issues you brought up here with this new substance. Thank you for a good reivew and for saving me some money at the hobby/hardware store.

    What if's....
    1) What if you used something to shape and smooth the foam after spraying but before it dried? I understand that it is still drying and will change shape a bit still but I wonder if this would work to get the ripples out requiring less sculpting later.
    2) What if you used this in a mold, would it hold the shape then you just need to flatten the bottom? I wonder if it will pop out of a mold or adhere to it?
    Thanks for the review.

      @Bluecho4 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Heck, you might be able to create a really quick and cheap mold for this spray foam using aluminum foil. Crumbled up to give it a rocky texture, almost like if making molds for plaster rocks. Maybe try pre-forming the aluminum mold into upside-down hill shapes, to expedite the process. If the foam expands too much out the top, simply cut that excess off. If the foam doesn't expand enough to fill the space, you have a smaller than normal sized hill.

    It's what I suspected; the exact thing as the yellow foam, re-branded for crafters, and made in white.
    I used it once for caves. I actually liked it.
    Thanks for the experiment! Yours turned out pretty good all considered.

    Do not try to shape it when wet with your hands. It will stick to your skin like crazy! Also do NOT get it on your clothes - they will be ruined.
    Mel the terrain tutor has a video on the construction version of this (this looks like exact same stuff just not yellow). His final take was that it was usable, but had problems -
    must be shaped , there is no way to spray it and get a usable item without shaving, trimming.
    When shaping and cutting it, the interior has holes (air pockets) that will show on the now cut surface. This will require you to cover the whole thing in some kind of joint compound or similar
    After those steps you can paint your rock and it works on table.
    Definitely not a time saver.
    I would rather wad-up a ball of tinfoil and shape that I to a rock then cover it with joint compound.

    My taxidermist has been using foam for 30 years. The difference is that he uses a two-part mix and stirs it up himself. Has a similar effect, but in a much larger quantity for mount bases. Better quality foam, too.

    The immense use of tile grout from Builders is incredible
    Remember
    This is Important
    Grout is Highly Corrosive
    It is Very Carcinogenic
    You need P100 filters
    Latex or equivalent hand protection
    Looks great
    But caution should be used as well

    I've used other expanding foam sprays in the past.
    One thing that came from an old tutorial (I think Mongoose did a few back when they had the Starship Troopers license) where you get some larger plastic bins, fill them with sand and shape a mould in the sand of the hill you want and spray the foam in while adding a lid to cover the top and keep it locked in, foam fills the void and gets textures embedded in it from the sand layer it gets which makes it extremely sturdy, and you, pretty much just need to cut the vent the lid would have to spray through and will have some spillage and then paint it.

  • @chriskaschafsky5846
    @chriskaschafsky5846 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Ok you have never worked with this clearly.
    Let's take a handful or 3 of tile grouting and just drop it on some hardboard. Yeah that was bright. You pushed plaster rocks into something that will become rocklike.
    You can shape it before you let it dry. You can texture it before it dries. You can add player bits to it. There is so much you can do.
    Give it another try but try these
    Spray into a basic shape and mold it.
    Sprinkle dirt and or stones for texture.
    Make a mound, drop 7 or so bricks on it and push a piller at an odd angle.
    Make a mound, use plastic wrap and make a hollow space, push a fallen tree in. Fill hollow with rasine.
    Use paper towels to make a dome, channel, or cave. Soray down, remove towels and boom 💥 perfect den or bandit cave
    There's so much you could da. So much fun you overlooked. Just be smart about it. Wear gloves, wear a mask. Wear eye protection. This stuff will stick to your skin hard.
    I used 14 cans to fill shoes, socks, pants, shirt, gloves and a clear plastic head to make a dummy for my kids to blow up.

    Great video. I love seeing reviews of unusual products like this. I think the texture would make some awesome lava terrain. Was it any easier to work with than insulation spray foam (super messy and toxic)?
    Another application might be to fill hollow terrain, like the inside of a building?

    Awesome to know this stuff exists. I’d be interested in a follow up after these hills have had some time to sit. I have had some issues in the past with construction spray foam/gap filler rocks, where even when they are coated with joint compound and BMC base coat, after a few weeks they expand if you carve the original hard surface off, and end up splitting the joint compound, base coat, and paint, revealing that yellow spongey inside. This stuff might not be better than XPS or EPS for making sub-structures, but if it doesn’t have any expansion issues, it could certainly be a replacement for old spray foam techniques. I might just have to try this stuff for making rocks and such!

    For the bases, definitely check out ePVC foam sheets if you haven’t already. They are essentially like masonite except made of plastic. Its lighter, and completely water resistant. It will also take edge carving a lot better - I noticed some chunky parts on the edges where the masonite sort of came apart on you.
    Its not too expensive either, and is sometimes available for next to nothing as scrap from sign crafting business and the like. Huge game changer for me when I found it

    Feels like this stuff is a tool in the toolbox. It's the same as yellow expanding foam, but it's white. It's got features and the fact that it wants to expand can make it useful if you wanted to smooth and join terrain pieces, fill gaps and seams (the larger the better almost), and generally make for solid results when your starting point was never going to have them otherwise. Where it might save you time is on a big project where you can use it here and go work on some other part over there. It won't replace your hot wire table and blocks of foam, certainly.

  • @sullyway51
    @sullyway51 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I would try to hold the pipe at one place and spray the foam out at one place leaving the pipe buried in the pile. That way I would think you would end up with a more smooth rounded hill without all the rolls. You did not say if it had as much fumes as the home gap filling foam.

  • @rwdyeriii

    I like the try it in a mold or shape it as its still wet maybe. Maybe a creature, flesh golem, where you can add body parts sticking out or spell effects. Maybe even make add on nozzle adapters to spray it out in diff forms, shapes, flatnesses. Seems interesting though, thanks for showing!!

    Hey Garman! How well do you think the stuff would work sprayed into a mold? If you were making something that required a bunch of the same part I wonder if you could carve one out of XPS and then make a mold of it and use this stuff to make a bunch more of them. Or even bricks? I wonder how well it would work for either cutting into bricks or if you wanted to make a mold of a brick or a rock how well it would work. Also when you sprayed out the lumps could you have taken a palette knife and smoothed it into a nice hill shape?

    The ripple come from how you placed the bead. All bead foam requires sculpting and sanding.

    I've been making sci fi terrain out of washed out food packaging trays. they have excellent shapes for buildings and platforms, etc but they're kind of flimsy. I was thinking that stuff like this (or most likely the generic insulation stuff) would be a good way to add some rigidity. the shape of the tray will contain the expansion, and whatever spills out the top can be cut flush.

    Did you ever try spraying it into a mold?

  • @JohnGunter_Johnprime
    @JohnGunter_Johnprime 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would think the best way to use this would be to make a mold, using a combination of a plaster hard shell and latex inside for your shape. Then you spray the foam into the latex shape, attach some kind of outer cover over the plaster shell, making sure there is an opening so that as the foam expands it has a way to push out. Then once it finishes expanding, it should take the shape of your latex and you'd be good. Your latex mold would be either make from a couple of interior rock shapes to make some kind of mountain shape etc. By the way, great review of the product.
