"Robam Preah Thong" or "Buong Suong", an excerpt of "Ream Eyso and Moni Mekhala Dance" is one of the sacred Cambodia's Classical Dances which originated hundred years ago. In this clip, you'll notice the dancers with make ups, costumes and the dance moves of King Sisowath period.

I am a Cambodian robam dancer, I’ve been dancing since I was 9 years old. I’m in my late 30s now. From what I learned from all of my master instructors and my late aunt who danced during the Sisowath era (KING SISOWATH) this particular style of movements/costume and white make up was how royal Cambodian dancers looked during the late 1800s and 1900s. We had the capes where the sbai (shawl that covers left shoulders) covered both shoulders. We had crowns that were totally different from what they looked today. The ancient Khmer empire has sculptures of ancient dances that can be traced back to the angkorian period of the 7th century. When the Khmer empire finally ended during the 14th century, the Ayutthaya king invaded and seized the royal ballet dancers which was about 2000 of them. From there is how Siam learned Khmer royal ballet. During the French protectorate era, king Sisowath 1906 took his royal ballet dancers to the French colonial exposition in France. There, was the first time ever Cambodian ballet was exposed to audiences. In the early 1940s-1960s Queen Kossamak wanted to modify the costumes and make up a bit to differentiate from Siam art. The reason why back then during the 1800s and 1900s we used white make up on our skin was because in Khmer mythology, gods and goddess had white skin. A lot of the costumes, green and gold are the most popular colors for fabric because God’s and goddess were green. Princess bopha devi is trying to revive the “old style” and keep it alive and exhibit to the audience how it looked like back then because no one would have seen them except the dancers themselves and the king. There maybe similarities between Thai and Khmer robam but those who are in this art knows the absolute difference and style the way we dance versus the way the Thais dance. My grandmother Morm Dok Peay was married to king sisowath.

You left out a big chunk of history. Including why at one point Cambodian robam were performed in Thai language. The basis of robam and lakhon is from poetry and music of the court. The glory of Angkor is ancient and Siam found glory and triumph over it. The Cambodian court was reduced down to poverty and decimated several times. While Siamese court was well maintained even after Ayuthaya was sacked, they were able to restore their court arts (even Cambodia had trouble with this after the Khmer Rouge regime). The Siamese court flourished and their riches from international relations and trade allowed them to create art and poetry. The poetry of Cambodian dance can only be traced to Siam not back to Angkor. Formerly, Cambodian dance used Siam poetry. Recently over the last few decades, Cambodians replaced "Chao Euy" with "Thlai Euy" because they realized this is a Thai relic. If you look into why this ever happened, you will find conflict in the history of what Thailand and Cambodia says about their history. Cambodian history on the dance is poorly written but Thailand is more well documented and historical accounts are more plentiful.
The art of Cambodia and Thailand actually came from the same root since Thai had invaded Cambodia and stoleCambodian’s dancer to Thailand in the late 14th century .

Catadara Thai people are secretly jealous of Khmer people. They love being jealous of the more superior Khmer art that they so badly want to claim. Their true culture are from the Tai minorities that live in the mountains and rice fields of southern China. These Thais should stop looking at Cambodia and reclaim the unknown culture of the Tai people in the marshlands of southern China instead.

It doesn't matter who copy who. We are neighbors and should learn to love each other like Buddhist. Everyone was influenced by each other. This is a very old Khmer dance before the reform of our current style. This is why it shares similarities with Thai style, and kept in tact. Khmer dance originated in Khmer Empire, and was borrowed by Thais. Thai had innovations such as crown that Khmer borrowed, and changed to Khmer style. Get over yourself and self nationalism. Culture is a melting pot and for everyone to share. Maybe appreciate similarities, not difference and who own what. We all bleed red and we will all die the same.

Yikes! After reading comments on Thai and Khmer Classical Dance videos, I wonder how many Thais and Khmer truly understand the history of their dances and cultures. I can see why people are confused about this being Thai or Khmer dance. This is what Khmer dancer looked like before the 1960s and this is most likely the style Thai dancers learned. The Khmer dance of today, including the Apsara dance, was created or re-created into modern versions by the Queen of Cambodia since parts of Khmer dance were forgotten and she wanted to revitalize Khmer dance. Princess Boppha Devi has said so herself. If Khmer empire and culture was and is so great, what better people could have the Thais have learned from than the Khmer? There must have been something that they admired about your culture, whether Thais want to admit it or not. Also, even as a foreigner, I can tell the difference between Thai and Khmer dance. Thai dance is not a direct copy of Khmer dance, although there are similarities. Both Thai and Khmer dance have kept their own style. Lastly, why are people calling this bouncy? It's not! If you want bouncy dance, go watch Bollywood dance or a really bad belly dancer.

I am a Cambodian robam dancer, I’ve been dancing since I was 12 years old. I’m in my mid 30s now. From what I learned from all of my master instructors and my late aunt who danced during the Sisowath era (KING SISOWATH) this particular style of movements/costume and white make up was how royal Cambodian dancers looked during the late 1800s and 1900s. We had the capes where the sbai (shawl that covers left shoulders) covered both shoulders. We had crowns that were totally different from what they looked today. The ancient Khmer empire has sculptures of ancient dances that can be traced back to the angkorian period of the 7th century. When the Khmer empire finally ended during the 14th century, the Ayutthaya king invaded and seized the royal ballet dancers which was about 2000 of them. From there is how Siam learned Khmer royal ballet. During the French protectorate era, king Sisowath 1906 took his royal ballet dancers to the French colonial exposition in France. There, was the first time ever Cambodian ballet was exposed to audiences. In the early 1940s-1960s Queen Kossamak wanted to modify the costumes and make up a bit to differentiate from Siam art. The reason why back then during the 1800s and 1900s we used white make up on our skin was because in Khmer mythology, gods and goddess had white skin. A lot of the costumes, green and gold are the most popular colors for fabric because God’s and goddess were green. Princess bopha devi is trying to revive the “old style” and keep it alive and exhibit to the audience how it looked like back then because no one would have seen them except the dancers themselves and the king. There maybe similarities between Thai and Khmer robam but those who are in this art knows the absolute difference and style the way we dance versus the way the Thais dance.
