Well, if it was the first half of the season, you could see it during the "winter" rewatch. If 2nd half, you could see it during the "summer/hiatus" rewatch. And they played the whole season again during the summer one, as well.
The shows that still do week to week episodes these days also have OnDemand viewing, so I prefer a bit of a hybrid. That way you can have the week in between to build it up and talk about it with friends, but also if you miss an episode you don't have to wait for re-runs to see it.
There were two rerun periods. One during the midseason hiatus, the other during the summer. However, you could easily miss a rerun too, and even if you had a VCR, you could forget to program it or program it for the wrong time, or a sibling could tape over it, the tape could run out, or a power-outage could leave your VCR blinking "12:00" almost as if it was taunting you. LoL So yeah, in many ways I prefer streaming. However, I do dislike the short season lengths for several reasons, chief among them is that it reduces our times with the characters we enjoy and sometimes those "filler" episodes ended up being fun and creative.
Beverly: Set a new course. Heading 344 mark 6. Cassie: Where's that? It's a partial left turn (forward and to the left). The heading system uses degrees from a compass: heading 0 is directly ahead. Heading 090 is to the right (starboard). Heading 180 is behind (aft). Heading 270 is to the left (port). This is also how they express enemy ship locations. If Worf says a Romulan Warbird is closing from bearing 177 mark 2, he's saying the warbird is coming up behind the ship and ever so slightly to the right.

Some people criticize the later seasons of TNG, but I dont get why. Brent Spiner at this point has mastered how to play Data and its amazing to watch an actor at his peak in a role that theyve mastered.
I've enjoyed all 7 seasons of TNG. Of course I think Season 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 are better than Season 1 and 2 and love TOS, the animated series and the TOS movies even the TNG and Kelvin timeline movies. I love Brent Spiner as Data and Patrick Stewart as Picard! I think TNG got better in my opinion after Gene Roddenberry left when Rick Berman and Brannon Braga took over the franchise and came out with DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and the TNG movies then the Kelvin timeline movies with J.J. Abrams and Justin Lin with the third one. I think Star Trek even gotten better after they left and expanding even more when Alex Kurtzman is at the helm now. I've been enjoying Discovery, Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and Strange New Worlds and I can't wait for the streaming movie Section 31 even the next new series Starfleet Academy and the live action comedy series that's now in development and hopefully we will finally get a 4th Kelvin timeline movie. I know a minority don't like the new Star Trek shows and movies that's out now and I find all of this hate on Alex Kurtzman and Star Trek: Discovery getting the most hate out of all new Star Trek by a minority of fans even now this hate on the teaser trailer of Star Trek: Section 31 starring Michelle Yeoh is so ridiculous.
I always marveled at the four Star Trek continuing themes: Spock, the man who wanted to be like a machine; Data the machine who wanted to be like a man; Seven of Nine, the woman who had been turned into a machine and was forced into rediscovering her humanity and Odo, the most ambiguous of all. Only science fiction and fantasy allow that kind of exploration of humanity.
I ignore Voyager, it sucks but 7of9 is by far the best character from it and it was interesting what they did with her, but she was a co-opted idea from Hugh, not original - they had a foundation of an interesting idea for The Doctor too, but, well, the writing for the whole show sucked and the characters were baadly written for the most part so, yeah, dropped the ball on all of it (including 7of9) butyeah I have always viewed the 3 as counterparts Spock, Data, Odo and Odo is the BEST ONE!!! even with all that happens with Spock, and Data (...) greatest Star Trek character ! hands-down !
I marvel at TOS always having the captain go on the away team, when in real life, subordinates do those missions and the captain stays to man the vessel. I marvel at TNG having so many repeating themes of Picard being tortured; the female admirals that are all micro-managing shrews; and, frankly, that the computer never once, failed to do its job.
The flip side of that was when X-Files was at its popularity and creative peak, and I was excited about the initial broadcast of the season closer. That evening, there was a tornado warning, so I had to go to a shelter. (A tornado did land a few miles away, although I didn't see it ) I had no way of seeing the episode I missed (didn't have a DVR at that time), until months later (a repeat showing the week before the new season started).
That sort of thing wasn't *solely* due to the way shows were broadcast, but also due to the comparative economics of owning "*THE* TV" back in the day, versus today where everyone either has their own bedroom TV and/or tablet, and or desktop/laptop computer, and/or cell phone. We just have such a proliferation of cheap viewing devices today compared to what he used to have to settle for. That means everyone doesn't have to come together to watch the one option anymore. Pair that with the internet, and video-on-demand, torrenting, TH-cam, etc., and there are just so many more options.

Cassie, to answer your question at the beginning of this video, yes I do miss when TV shows were on weekly. I was born in '74 so I lived much of my life watching TV using the old format. Not only were season-ending or series-ending episodes more exciting, but it felt more like a communal experience when you knew that people all over the U.S., including your friends, were watching at the same time as you. Not being able to replay episodes also made them more special. I was around even before VCR's so as far as we knew at the time, we probably were never going to see those TV shows again, unless the network decided on reruns (at the time not all shows were shown again as reruns), but then you'd have to wait to see the episodes that were your favorites. The new way is okay, and it does have some benefits. In any case, I really enjoyed your reactions, as always, and I sincerely hope Cassie that you're having a great summer, you and your family.

"Lower Decks" is a great season 7 episode. Unfortunately, you skipped a previous episode that is at the root of it. Will not be nearly the same without the setup.
I mean, she watched these two without having seen Brothers in S4 and she was able to get the gist of things. Obviously, it's not optimal for her to watch an episode without a previous episode's backstory, but this reaction proves it can work out.
You can appreciate Lower Decks without without seeing anything else. Most of the episodes have exposition where it's needed, and when it isn't, the stories are fine as their own thing. The references to previous EPs play out more Easter eggs or throwbacks rather than integral to the plot.
I always thought the Borg were the scariest enemy because they werent "interesting". They couldnt be reasoned with or controlled, they were seemingly unstoppable.
It's a shame you skipped the other two parter in Season 6, called 'Birthright' part 1 and part 2. Yes, Worf indeed has a ponytail now. Without really spoiling anything about his future Trek appearances, this is something he will keep for a long time.
As much as DS9 is one of my favorite shows ever (and my top for Star Trek), it will be tough for Cassie to do this sort of format. That show had (several) multiple-season arcs for each member of the cast and a lot of the reoccurring characters. The writers embraced Star Trek's history, and tried to have more consistency (instead of merely adding throw-away technobabble). Missing 3/4s of every season will greatly reduce the impact of moments that are paid off in later episodes.
I find it interesting, in this scene 7:39 Data is showing signs of "Concern", he "Worries" that he is only capable of "Anger" and other negative emotions. And does it all the while showing other emotions that they don't even talk about.
You're guessing right here... Stephen was a massive Trek fan just like Whoopi Goldberg, so he really wanted to be on TNG. He was also a massive Depeche Mode fan, and he saw them live a lot of times. He was in the wheelchair section when i saw the Singles tour in London in 1998. 😏
Ok, just have to say... you really need to give Star Trek: Deep Space Nine a shot. It'll be harder to select "critical" episodes because it's less episodic and has more ongoing story arcs, but is so worth it. It's a fantastic flavor of Star Trek... though I definitely think you'll need to watch some more TNG episodes that you skipped over in order to appreciate DS9 fully. Like "Ensign Ro" and "Preemptive Strike."

To the topic of weekly vs binge, I was a Lost fan. Never missed an episode week to week. I re-watched it binge style, and it was so much better. You remembered things better. Yes, recaps help a bit, but nothing is better than having just watched. I'm a fan of binge. Also did the same with X-Files, with the movies inserted where appropriate. Way better binge style.
It can work both ways. "Angel" season 4 wore me out when it first aired, as the dark storyline was dragged out over 8 months. When I rewatched it from DVDs, the pacing was greatly improved. On the other hand, there was a modern era "Doctor Who" storyline that involved tragic events. I was fine with the episodes, as I watched them when they first aired, and the show was on hiatus for several weeks between some key episodes. Other people who binged it years later were upset, because they felt that the characters got past a tragedy way too fast. In that case, they were still grieving.over events they watched the day before, but the writer had planned for the initial audience to have weeks to process it.
To anyone considering a Lost rewatch, I like to recommend Chronologically Lost, a fan edit that reassembles the whole show into chronological order. The first season's-worth of episodes can feel a little disjointed as it goes through all the flashbacks, you don't get to the plane crash until like ep 25 I think, and then the island stuff just cruises. I really enjoyed it, a fun way to do a rewatch that also feels fresh and new.

The reason you initially didn't find the Borg that interesting is precisely why they are so much more dangerous and intimidating than nearly any other creature. You can appeal to honor or skill with a vicious warrior race like Klingons. You can appease Ferengi through bribery and greed. Even the omnipotent Q can be convinced to alter their intentions and they're arguably the most powerful beings in all of existence. There is absolutely nothing you can do to sway the Borg. When they come for you, there is no reasoning with them... no mercy, no remorse, no emotion at all. You and everyone you have ever known are nothing more than resources to be consumed to improve the collective. Your sacrifice will not even be acknowledged, as it was inevitable. Resistance is futile.
"It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop..." - Kyle Reese, "Terminator"
"Why do i hate his face but love Datas face." - it shows the range of Brent Spiner that he can play very loveable characters as well as very hateable, and his range of facial expressions are a big part of it.
Also sorry Cassie but you couldnt be more wrong about the Borg, making them more 'agressive' and straight up villainous makes them just more generic and boring, what made them so unique and scary to beign with WAS how utterly cold and emotionless they were, that was the entire point. They kinda ruined them when they made them more 'muahahaha evi'
When shows aired weekly at the same time, everyone was on the same schedule. You watched it along with everyone else. Then you went to work or school the next day and everyone was talking about it. Streaming removed the communal experience of everyone watching something at the same time. When I watched Buffy the Vampire Slayer or Lost or the reboot of Battlestar Galactica, everyone was in the online discussions groups immediately afterwards discussing the episode. Now people watch it whenever. "What did you think of last night's episode?" has changed to "Don't tell me. I haven't watched that yet". One more thing that brought people together is now gone.
yeah and you had to be there when it came on, so sometimes you would need to plan your schedule around it, unless you could figure out how to set the timer on the VCR and make that work, but that was really risky
In a way, Data and Picard now share a very similar, very tragic experience. When Picard was turned into Locutus, he couldn't stop the killing the Borg made him do. Now Data knows what it's like to be co-opted to do terrible things against his will now also.

What I don't miss about those days was that if you missed an episode for whatever reason that was it, you missed it, there was no "stream it later".
Well, if it was the first half of the season, you could see it during the "winter" rewatch. If 2nd half, you could see it during the "summer/hiatus" rewatch. And they played the whole season again during the summer one, as well.
@@Vipre- This! Binging the series showed me just how much I missed when it was airing 😅
The shows that still do week to week episodes these days also have OnDemand viewing, so I prefer a bit of a hybrid. That way you can have the week in between to build it up and talk about it with friends, but also if you miss an episode you don't have to wait for re-runs to see it.
Thank god we had a VCR. I was taping the episodes anyway, so I could rewatch at leisure.
LoL
So yeah, in many ways I prefer streaming.
Thanks for that. I did not know that. Very useful.

An idea: What if Cassie could do a poll of the episodes we most missed from her TNG journey, let's say of the 3 per season that got the most votes but didn't make it, and then do a bonus Popcorn In Bed episode with the top 4? Episodes like "The Offspring" could get another chance that way.

I've always felt that that line had connotations far outside the situation in this episode.
Some people criticize the later seasons of TNG, but I dont get why. Brent Spiner at this point has mastered how to play Data and its amazing to watch an actor at his peak in a role that theyve mastered.
Definitely, but the writing on a lot of episodes had fallen off(Crushers ghost lover episode comes to mind).
The scripts sucked, that’s why. Seasons 6 and 7 had more cringes than Seasons 1 and 2.
And 3,4,5
I've enjoyed all 7 seasons of TNG.

Odo was just trying to find out more about his own race, and then felt split loyalties when he discovered them.

My family use to gather around the tv every Sunday night to watch X Files. That’s something I miss about weekly releases.

Admiral Nychaev is so incredibly easy to dislike. Ruthless, unprincipled, short-sighted, dismissive, and downright rude.

Are you sure it wasn't "Disaster" (S5E5) where Troi had to take command of a crippled Enterprise while the captain was stuck in a turbolift with 3 kids.
@@timwong5908 I think you’re right. Maybe I’m mixing hers up with that episode. Didn’t Troi go to Crusher for advice on that issue in another episode? Im mixing up I think three different episodes at least…if my Trek memory is getting that bad I’m going to have to do a rewatch.

@@fredfredburger5150 Totally forgot about Keiko and Worf! Would have been funny to see how Cassie would have reacted to that scene 😂
frere jacques....
Wow I loved your first watch reaction of these two episodes. It brought back a lot of memories. You did a great job. I miss those old days of television when we got 22 episodes in an 8 month period.
I hope you watched in your own time, actually all episodes with Ensign Ro Laren. They are all great in my opinion, i think the only one you watched here was Cause and Effect, and she only had a minor role there.
35:35 Mark! Cassie, that's Data's cat named "Spot" whose physical appearance changes depending on available cats to play the part. Usually, Spot is a male cat, except when Spot became a mother! 😺
The joke being that "Spot" is a dogs name, not a cats name! Silly Data! 😂
@PhysicalMediaPreventsWea-bx1zm ! Yes, there is that factor, too! 😁
There's a dark theory floating around that every time Spot's breed and gender changed it's because Data had an oopsie and got a new cat.
@@Ambaryerno ! That is dark indeed! It almost could be a behind-the-scenes reality! 😧
Way better binge style.
x files is amazing as well. at least the first 6 or 7 seasons is.
I clearly remember watching this finale with my dad at about 12 years old. Star Trek TNG was on Fridays at 7PM, X-Files at 8.
just realized we missed “Frame of Mind” - anyone know if it was even in contention on the polls? i like the twilight zone-esque spooky ones
come to think of it, we didn’t get “Remember Me” or “Schisms” or “Clues” or “Timescape” or “Night Terrors” either!
The cliff hangers and waiting for months added to the suspense, it made you want to watch it.
And it absolutely will not stop..."
- Kyle Reese, "Terminator"
"Why do i hate his face but love Datas face." - it shows the range of Brent Spiner that he can play very loveable characters as well as very hateable, and his range of facial expressions are a big part of it.
DS9 gonna blow your mind.
she needs to watch every episode...
I do not miss commercials or waiting weekly for tv shows or even months to resolve a season finale. Im glad most of it is in the past.
Yes, that is indeed the real Stephen Hawking.
3:49 “Clarence.”
😂 Oh, I wish!
I'm excited and worried for if she gets to DS:9. It will be difficult to do it in this format, skipping most episodes. Would still watch tho!
she needs encouraged/persuaded to watch all the episodes, skpping is simply not conducive to DS9
35:30 You'll see Hugh again....
“Hugh we go again!” no need to apologize Cass, that was adorable!😊
She frequently says something adorable 🥰
Cassie’s level of sass in this reaction was hilarious. You’ve come so far! 😂
