We were incredibly excited about this journey. However, on the morning of travel we still had not secured our tickets.
We were expecting to travel third class and stand for the whole journey. We were aware first class seated ticket are difficult to secure.
We learnt when we were in Nuwara Eliya that the entrepreneurial folk of the area often Tuk Tuk drivers buy many of the tickets up. The actual ticket price from Nuwara to Ella is 2500 LKR, these tickets are available on the black market for between 5000 LKR and 10,000 LKR.
So I guess all is not lost if you haven’t got a ticket on the day, you just need to find the right black market racketeer.
We have our friend Chandra to thank for our first class ticket. we didn’t appreciate it at the time there are only 24 seats and they are sold out well in advance.
Chandra happens to be good friends with the ticket, office master, a quick conversation and a packet of tea sealed the deal. We paid face value for our 1st class seats.
The scenery is stunning, from woodland forests to deep jungle from Paddy Fields to the mountain ranges and the summit-level station of Pattipola (at 1,890m/6,200ft).
Other highlights were the series of waterfalls - Elgin, Kithal Ella, Horsetail, St Clair’s - cascading dramatically down green hillsides.
The vistas were spectacular, each time we entered a tunnel we almost held our breath in anticipation of the next jaw dropping panoramic view that unfolded before us.
The best train journey we’ve ever experienced and made so much more special by the driver and guard on board.
