A 55 meter sailing yacht is a huge, very stable vessel, designed to survive mid-ocean hurricanes. I've seen waterspouts while sailing but none remotely capable of doing this.

The captain of the vessel that pulled the survivors out said she went on her side, I'm wondering if the demasting was violent enough to damage her keel and sink her as a result. I'm curious about her hull design now a blue water capable vessel, as you said, should have withstood a storm like that.

    This is bad journalism.
"The super yacht stood little chance". This is bullshit. The waterspout stood little chance of bringing this boat down. The MUCH smaller sailboat in front of the Bayesian had no problems at all.
Also, we don't know if the breaking of the mast caused the boat to sink. In fact, it's highly unlikely. The lightweight aluminum mast weighs 500kg, while the boat weighs 476t.
We won't know what happened until the investigation report gets published.

I was watching the Game of Thrones spin off, House of the Dragon last night and then reading about this coincidence, then I realised in Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, nothing ever happens by accident, no one falls off a dragon by accident, no one slips in the bath, no one trips and falls on their sword, everything has a reason, someone causing it, someone to blame (makes for good drama). But this yacht capsizing and a codefendant getting run over shows us that real life is messy, random crazy things happen, sometimes it's no one fault. People fall off dragons by accident.

@@stuartd9741 Despite the eye witness report from the skipper of the other large vessel that explained exactly what happened?
I’ll translate it for the hard of understanding:
The vessel got hit by a large waterspout.
Waterspouts are tornadoes, otherwise known as twisters, that occur over water.
A well developed waterspout will have a rotational surface velocity of 50-60 mph and will be carrying many hundreds of tons of water.
When the waterspout hit the vessel, all of that mass of water travelling really quite quickly, acted on the very tall rig and pressed the vessel flat down onto its side.
When a vessel is on its side at least 50% of its width will be underwater.
Yachts that large have a lot of paths by which water can enter if they’re placed in that position, it will enter very quickly.
Once enough water had entered the vessel it became negatively buoyant, it no longer displaced enough water to remain afloat so, in perfect compliance with the law of physics that Archimedes identified during his famous bathtub episode….. it sank.
I hope that clears things up for you.

    • @robm.4512
      @robm.4512 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@stuartd9741 I think that the eyewitness who was interviewed described it very well.
The vessel was hit by a large waterspout, they can carry many hundreds of tons of water and rotate at surface speeds of 50-60mph which represents a vast amount of kinetic energy.
It may help to think about that energy in terms of a mile or so line of loaded articulated lorries, or semis if you’re stateside, all travelling at 50-60 mph, having a multiple pile-up into the vessel’s rig.
That rig, the really tall mast and all of the stuff that held it in the upright position, presented a very long lever
All of that kinetic energy acted upon the vessel’s rig and pressed her fully over onto her side.
When a vessel like that is on its side at least 50% of its width will be underwater and there are a lot of pathways above deck, normally presenting no danger, by which a lot of water can enter very quickly, which in this case it did.
Following the fruits of Archimedes most famous bathtub moment, once the quantity of water inside the vessel had reduced its displacement sufficiently it did exactly the right thing, it crossed the rubicon from positive to negative buoyancy….. and sank.
It’s not a mystery, though I expect there will now be a hullabaloo of conspiracy this and DARPA that and weather control machines and space lasers and probably even genetically modified scuba-buffalo with titanium tipped fighting horns and detailed plans of the vessel so they’d know exactly where to punch holes in it to make sure that the owner died.
It was a really freak accident, they occasionally happen, life goes from great to “well that sucks” in the blink of an eye, nothing mysterious or mystical about it.

You'd have to be EXTREMELY unlucky to get caught up in one, specially with today's weather forecasting abilities. I'd be very interested to see the shipping forecasts for the past 24 hours for this area. Also hundreds of aircraft cross the Med area daily, if there was any kind of severe storm warnings out, flights have to be redirected to avoid them which can often lead to longer journeys, was this the case? 😂😂😂😂 bro there's easier ways to take someone out than taking down a yacht with a bunch of people on it especially innocent ones and children.. and 15 people were saved so there was a chance they wouldnt even get the person or persons they were atremptimgto take out anyway. They could have got him walking by himself, poisoned a drink in a bar or restaurant, put a bomb under his car etc. So they conspired a water spout to appear at the perfect time? 😂😂 yeah okaayyy😂😂

NEVER RENAME A VESSEL - Legend says that when every ship is christened, its name goes into a "Ledger of the Deep" maintained by Neptune (or Poseidon) himself. Renaming a ship or boat means you're trying to slip something past the gods and you will be punished for your deviousness.
The British-flagged 56 metre ship - previously called the Salute - was built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, and refitted in 2020.
