So much more than just empty shapes. Sensei Hotton brings out the essence and the spirit of karate in his teachings.
10.25 shows how humble he is. What a magnificent teacher
people dont get the amount of work and reps it takes to get to that level. and the breaths you take during the work, gives u the spirit of whatever you're trying to achieve.
A true teacher can touch your soul even just by one word or one action, and that's what happened to me here.

Rick's insight into Karate is so much advanced...a real Sensei, who mastered the form, found his own (!) "truths" in the art, and defined his (for lack of a better word) "twist" to it. He realized the true meaning of every form, and the importance of harmony of mind, breath, posture, core, tension & relaxation... Very very valuable lessons/insights. Thank You very much for sharing. Watching this new video before my 2nd Dan exam feels really amazing
Watching these videos, creates some many "wow" moments for me. The glimpses of the essence within "true" karate as Sensei Rick Attempts to share is nourishing to my very being.
What a great sensei. I completely agree with his philosophy.
Finally a real great karate master. The high level is always the same and the inner principles of Tai Chi ( the real one) or Xin Yi , or any other martial art, at high level, are always the same. The problem we have in karate is that most of the pratictioners and master still stick to unnatural and wrong way to practice instead of evolve their art. I'm very happy about this video and the principles showed. I'm also very happy about master Hotton I didn't know and I'm very glad to follow him on youtube. This video makes great my day!

The best explanation for gyaku tsuki i’ve seen so far, as I was trying to find out why my right side gyaku was a little bit off, while my left one was fine. It drove me nuts! Now I can work on the sync with the hips (and the invisible arrow). Exquisite teaching by a man who wants to pass the knowledge on. The definition of a great teacher. Teaching without ego. Many say they practice karate-do, but do they really use their practice of a myriad of details as a constant reminder of the larger context and the largest of issues? Many who watch this appreciate your gracious reminders...
Simply a BRILLIANT technician and TEACHER. He gives so much. I trained at The Takushoku Diagaku, Japan in '72 and '75 (for four years.) None of my Kenshusei or Senpais would pass on any knowledge...except MATA,MOTTO SEISHIN !!!
I've been training for 37 years now and this man is one of the best karateka I've ever seen.on a par with terry o Neill and Frank Brennan.

I really like Rick Hotton's approach to Martial arts about finding your own Karate. Although I practice Tomiki Aikido these videos have made me really think about my own budo journey.

His deep exploration into karate is amazing, but it cannot be taught only in one day seminar. One should really learn from him for years continuously. Otherwise it wont stick. One day seminar with him probably inspire the students to start one's own long journey

Truly if this is your way of life....it is possible to this level but it takes time.
"My hip, pressing into my elbow". Wow. And when he said "Aikido"..I thought "I knew it!". He obviously has had extensive training in some form of internal art. I've never seen such advanced movement in a pure Karate practitioner. The Deep knowledge. At :48 in, that little twisting redirection of his arm? That's a whole seminar on principles of movement.....If you are training with this instructor, you are lucky indeed.
If I'm not mistaken, Rick Hotton Sensei was an aikido student under -Hiroshi Ikeda Sensei- Mitsugi Saotome Sensei.

Rick, amazing to see all your videos. I always wondered what happened to you. Last time I saw you we were training nunchaku in your Sarasota dojo. I always considered you a good friend. Looking back I guess we have know each other more than 30 years since Lori and Maas Brothers. Scary how fast time has passed. Would love to hear from you.

Great thinker of karate
Karate, in my opinion, should be kept simple. Sensei shows his spiritual side and passion in this session. He gets his points over well, with excellent detail and communication skills. On courses that I have attended in the past, I have found it frustrating that some of the Japanese Sensei's fail to get their points across. I'm afraid that training by snapping the joints is going to cause problems later on in life. I now have to train with a more softly approach with no snapping, no cracking sounds from my gi and relativity little kime. As one gets older the approach to training alters.
Hotton Sensei, did you happen to know Baranoski Sensei from Florida Karate Academy in Ft Lauderdale? I trained there early 80's, your focus and power remind me so much of his, the snap of his punch would leave red marks on your chest from the ghi smacking you :). I remember him telling us when he trained in Japan, they did floor exercises with someone on their shoulders.
Robotic Karate...its a very interesting description to all beginners of all karate..

Kashar Selema ban Yahawadah no he shotokan 100%. I’ve studied both. Well not for long but they both have pros and cons
It is not a question of 'Style' or pros and cons, all M.arts are hard and soft if you practice them correctly

Very Tai Chi.
I really like this guy, but sometimes I wish he'd write a few key points on a note card or something and keep his talk a bit more on track. He alway's seems to flitter about from point to point in a stream of consciousness style and it's hard to keep up.
How zen would it be if the cat was the actual master.
