According to fellow musicians, he wrote the lyrics and music in about 30 minutes,,, his inspiration was riding in a plane, looking down and seeing El Paso.

Marty Robbins is probably best remembered for his cowboy songs, "Big Iron", "El Paso", "Streets of Laredo". However he was a much more rounded artist than that, he also wrote and recorded hits such as "Devil Woman", My Woman My Woman, My Wife" , "A White Sport Coat".

I love the Ted-Mex sound, this song reminds me of my mother, she sang it all the time, she was also a great musician, we woke to beautiful piano music nearly every morning, we knew the last song of the repertoire meant it was nearly time to get up. It is a beautiful song called "moonlight on the Hudson". 8 pages I believe. Good memories

Most soothing voice in the world, and a good man in his personal life to boot. - Marty was a Nascar driver on the side. While in a race Marty saw another car in the line of fire. The car was stopped in the middle of the track. Marty knew it was inevitable that this car would be hit by more than one car, and goes without saying, the driver killed. So, quick thinking without care for own life, Marty turned the wheel towards the stalled car to protect the driver from the full impact of the speeding race cars behind.
Marty successfully saved the life of the stalled driver taking the full impact himself. Marty had broken most of the bones in his body, sustaining other, possibly fatal injuries.
Marty was a devout Christian, living what the Gospel taught: "No greater love a man has than this, but to lay down one's life for a friend."
To remember and follow without hesitancy these words of Christ at that moment tells you where his heart lay: " ....store up your treasures in Heaven. For where your treasure lies, there will your heart be also."
I doubt many would be so fearless at that moment as the 1st inclination would be to panic, in fear, to save one's own life.
Marty died of a heart attack at the age of 57.
One of my favorite Marty Robbins' songs, which always brings me chills every time I hear it is "The Master's Call."
Amazing video. Amazing reaction. Just enough said. Marty's talent critiqued perfectly.
    Thank you.

This is one part of the story. Marty sings and tells Fellina's side of the story in his song 'Fellina', then there is a finaly chapter that revisits El Paso a century later in 'El Paso City'. Check them out, get the whole story.

This song is considered a Master Piece and is unsurpassed. Been around a very long time. Holds it's place as one of the very most awesome songs of all time. Indulge me as I tell a little true story: Was working as a Cowboy (Cowgirl) in Montana back in the mid 90's.One of our gang was Ducey...a goofy young guy, and just not very smart. He just wasn't. But he was a Desert Storm Vet, and a Cowboy, so we gave him love and plenty of respect. Ducey could sing. Mostly humming and whistle-ing, and bits of a song here and there. One evening he was grooming horses while the rest of us sat around, He started singing EL PASO. The world stopped. He could sing. We were raptured. He told us "I just like to sing. When I was in the sand box (the war) the Soldiers asked me to sing this song, every night. It kind of soothed, them, and we were all scared, so I was happy to sing it every night"

"Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs" is the fifth studio album by Marty Robbins, released on the Columbia Records label in September 1959 and peaking at #6 on the U.S. pop albums chart. It was recorded in a single eight-hour session on April 7, 1959,[1] and was certified Gold by the RIAA in 1965[2] and Platinum in 1986."

It's too bad, that a lot of people have never heard of Marty Robbins & the "Western" style of music; I grew up listening to this type of music,if more people would take the time to really listen to this music, they might find out how much they have missed in life, there is so much more to the late Marty Robbins than can be told in this format; Marty is also one of the guitar players on this album, he played several instruments including the piano! And he also drove race cars,he named one of them after one of his popular songs "Devil woman" & it carried the numbers 777 or sometimes just 77. Marty was taken from us way too soon! It's just a shame that more people don't know about this " Western " music !

I was so excited to see this video notification. Marty is definitely one of my favorites. If you wanna hear more, I've seen several great suggestions. Big Iron is probably the other that he is well known for. It's hard to go wrong, really. Glad you enjoyed.

Country music used to be called Country and Western. The Western part was lost back in the 70's, or so it seems.

One of the best story tellers ever. His songs always were set in the West. As a girl his songs captured my imagination and I wanted to marry a cowboy. I kinda' did. He rode and trained horses after he retired from the military. Always had a gentle hand.

It is a classic. There are no other songs like it. The only one that compares is "Seven Spanish Angels" by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson. Check it out on TH-cam if you haven't seen and heard it.

There's also El Paso city, I think it's like a second or third part to this song, I wanna say there's 3 different songs that go together telling a story, but I can't remember them in order and one escapes me at the moment if there's 3 like I'm thinking lol

This is from a set of three songs: El Paso, Feleena, and El Paso City. Great but sad story.
