Year of the linux desktop was 2023 for me, and as of a week ago i have finally completed the full Microsoft purge.
Haven't looked back a single time, and it feels sooo good to live in a Microsoft free house

So in essence by disabling the feature I actually get the old file file explorer which doesn't have Sharepoint and various crap shoehorned into it and is more performant? That's a feature in my book!

Regarding Recall from the very beginning I thought no way it was developed as a service (in the basic meaning) for the users; it was created as a improved new way to steal information from the people, telling them it was a simply nostalgic gadget. So after all the uproar it received M$ just hide the user part of it, I mean the visible part, the interface, but as shown, Recall basis is already there. Most likely they can expand its development in background and I'd not surprised if it could be remotely enabled through updates or manually. This is sheer Micro$oft, they're just looking fr better ways to get user behaviours to be reselled, this is a LOT of potential money.

Default state of Recall is "Enabled" on upgrade and on fresh install of 24H2....(Locale USA). The new install was tested on a VM using VMware Workstation ver 17.6.1. The upgrade was tested on a laptop coming from 23H2 to 24H2

At this point, if I can get everything in my network to run Arch linux or a derivative, I'll be happy.
Been a Windows user since 3.01, but at this point I'm so done with Microsoft adding "features" I don't want or need.
The few snags I have: CAD, mainly Rhinoceros, Solidworks, Solid Edge and Fusion doesn't play well with a linx env.
And I still have to figure out how to play with PLC's without a VM. Otherwise I'll have to have a Windows box, either firewalled or disconnected.

Been dual booting linux for a while in preparation for this Recall stuff, but always kept putting it off. Yesterday when I got home from work, my windows bootloader was suddenly completely borked. Was surprisingly easy to make the switch to linux at that point. Took like 15min to get steam, discord, etc. up and running. And the "unsupported" game I'm currently playing worked perfectly with just one run arg in steam, mods and everything.

If I need to keep a windows PC, my plan is, make a disk image before I use it, then keep it offline.
Once a year, I will wipe the drive clean, restore the disk image and let it go online to Update itself. After that make a new Disk Image, and keep it offline.

3 months late, but after running the DISM command on my last remaining Windows system (24h2 26100.2894) Recall is disabled without my intervention.
TBH, I don't care if Recall is running on that PC, I've physically disconnected all of my other drives, formatted them to ext4, and completely isolated Windows in its own box for the like 2 games I play that dis-support Linux (and the days I'm spending on those games is numbered)
Plus, I have a special wallpaper that depicts all of the worlds worst things being locked away on Alcatraz Island... Including Hitler, Ticks, Xi Jinping, Activision, Disney, and of course, Recall... I can only hope that Recall snaps a picture of it and sends it back to Satya Nadellas desk.

does the disable Recall Function in O&O-Shutup not work? In my Office root Folder I got a recall.dll which has the rights to read "all Applications" - "system", " Admins" and "users"...... Can we find out what it does? BTW Iam on "23H2". "DISM /Online /Get-FeatureInfo /FeatureName=Recall" gives me a negative though.... updates paused... phew

I am a bit late to the party, noticed in the previous days that even users not having the Copilot+ computers got Recall installed and many freaked out. My modest understanding is, that Microsoft is lazy AF and they developed this dependency for the future releases of Win11 24 version, and regardless of hardware, you have it there, just it cannot run the same way it will on the Copilot+ hardware.
When you initiate a new Win11 machine with the Copilot+ hardware (or even without), you should lave a choice at the beginning whether you want to run this spyware or not. So I suppose that it will have an impact on how it configures everything from that point, that if you click no to this spyware, it will launch everything else fine. But if you installed the whole 24 version today on the whole, clicking yes to everything, it comes embedded and removing it will affect other elements. That's how I understand the whole issue. Might be wrong though. The rumour has it that EU made Microsoft comply with their regulations and the Recall can be uninstalled, but this luxury has not been granted to the rest of the world. Which always brings me to the thought why MS couldn't separate the markets regarding Clownstrike and similar products having kernel access. Why the EU ruling had to affect the entire globe and MS blaming EU from it. Does anyone know?

I discovered this past weekend in Windows 10 that if you uninstall Copilot that the file explorer is dependent on it now. The whole file system crashes badly. So badly, that I had to install Linux Mint. Could not re-install 10 via USB flash drive. This is on a 2020 PC before TPM 2.0, so my hardware isn't compatible nor can upgrade to Windows 11. Friendly heads up on a new wrinkle in this story.
