I'm in this video (that's the back of my head). Fun fact: It was filmed in the old (closed) Scala cinema in Kings Cross and was co-directed by Sean and a young up-and-coming director named Edgar Wright. I wonder what happened to him. ; )
1996 - I discovered these roving Llamas. None of my friends understood it. 10 years later i am soooo proud of being among the first who understood their genius (among my "so-called musical expert friends"). God bless the Llamas. If she exists...
I was in a rather small record shop in London, when this track was played over the whole shop. I stood there for an hour listening to most of the album then bought it. Pet Sounds being my all time No 1 album, Hawaii is as close. Thanks for this, Vortexion.
I heard Sean was tapped to work with Brian Wilson at one time. But, never happened. I think on the Brian's side cause he is somewhat sketched out. But could have been REALLY interesting!
I loved this band/album/song SO very dearly in the 90's/early 00's. Still do. No better way to welcome the Autumn than to revisit this after a long hiatus.
what a pleasure to see some media on these guys,I mixed monitors for them in houston,Tx on the hawaii tour with stereolab, and they are to date one of best and nicest bands I've had the pleasure of working with,I hope they make it here again soon.
ironie, beaume au coeur, bonne humeur, bonesprit,j'en passe et des meilleurs!les high llamas, quoi!merci à Sir Bernie Lenoir de me les avoir fait découvrir en 1998!
I love this song. Played it on debut on SPACE PIRATE RADIO. So happy to have seen them at the EL Rey Theatre in Los Angeles with STEREOLAB and MOUSE ON MARS.
One of the THE greatest underappreciated bands of all time. Sean O'Hagan and Co. are pure genius. Goddamn! When I think of the absolute shit music made today, and just pine for more music from the Llamas.
hmm, a lot of their songs seem to be about performing arts, The Click and The Fizz, Giddy & Gay, Rotary Hop, Theatreland, The Holly Hills, Edge of the Sun, Showstop Hip Hop
This is Sean from the Llamas here - Tyler is an enormous influence on me now. He is part of the generation That have reinvented the idea of contemporary buzz sound as opposed to precious archiving of sound. More on this later. Just saying ,I'm in awe.
Such BRILLIANCE. Why can't music like this be made today?

The banjo in the background reminds me of Cabin Essence by the Beach Boys.
Monster Movie pfp
They opened for Stereolab at a show in Chapel Hill NC - many years ago, I was there. It was great.

back here in 2022 coz this song really is as brilliant and underrated as the beach boys songs that inspired it. 🙏
It has that kind of Beach Boys Smile, Wild Honey, Friends era vibe about it & the singer (Sean O'Hagan) sounds just like Al Jardine.
Reminds me a lot of the Friends era.

Wow, these guys touring with Stereolab sounds like a dream! Thanks for sharing that :)
One of the most beautiful records ever written.
I had this album in elementary school!! So nostalgic!
its great fun picking out all the Wilson bits in between!
ironie, beaume au coeur, bonne humeur, bonesprit,j'en passe et des meilleurs!les high llamas, quoi!merci à Sir Bernie Lenoir de me les avoir fait découvrir en 1998!
listened to this everyday on the last cruise! love it!
Like the love theme to a lost 60s romantic comedy in an alternate universe.
Cabinessence :)

Guy Guden what a show that would have been
indeed, Lucio, indeed.
THE BRIAN WILSON ESSENCE EVERYWHERE
I discovered these guys on launchcast radio 3 years ago. I would never have heard of them otherwise - simply sublime
Simply irresistible...
This is so good ffs
One of the THE greatest underappreciated bands of all time. Sean O'Hagan and Co. are pure genius. Goddamn! When I think of the absolute shit music made today, and just pine for more music from the Llamas.
this is one of my all time favorite
Edgar Wright directed this! Great match up :-)
Thanks for sending me here Tyler
I'd like for all the guitar virtuosos out there to challenge Sean O'Hagan's banjo part on this song! I mean how brilliant is this!
excelente musica, una banda brillante en todos los sentidos!!!!
Brian Wilson would be proud
They are playing Moseley folk festival in Sept. I'm there!!
Gorgeous
Le joyau des High Llamas…
Never heard of them...banjo sounds good!the video is ok!!!
I hear The Beach Boys
+Chris Johnson Would quite easily fit onto Friends :)
+Chris Johnson ...And Smile.
fanfanackapan yup! Most def. although my favourite albums are Surfs up and Holland.
Me too honey
ah que deliciosa cancion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ELO,THE BEATLES, XTC rolled into one
Beach Boys, you need to listen to Pet Sounds and Smile…
Thumbs up for big beach boys vibes and Edgar Wright directing 👍🏻
Wow, I didn’t know how Edgar Wright directed this! Had to google and see for myself. Definitely makes me love this track even more.
man, i wish id written this........
Could easily be a Beach Boys out-take from 67/68 with shades of Christopher Rainbow too, great song.
much better than outtake...
They're playing live soon:
07/11/09 The Luminaire London
09/11/09 The Glee Club Birmingham
07/12/09 Band On The Wall Manchester
Did you ever go see them on any of those dates?
ekse876 I did, I went to all three. Did you see them?
hmm, a lot of their songs seem to be about performing arts, The Click and The Fizz, Giddy & Gay, Rotary Hop, Theatreland, The Holly Hills, Edge of the Sun, Showstop Hip Hop
AWSESOME
yum yum
...Dorothy Ashby, Berry Adams, Rollin', Calling Up Calling Down...
yeah, thats their influence ^_^
@PeasGraveny That's exactly what I was thinking!
This *was* 1996 for me.
they had a very long conversation about sandwiches at some point....when Sean first met Brian....sort of put him off a little....
you and me both!
I believe Edgar Wright was as high as the llamas when directing this one. '^'
kakabulim!!
2:25 ⛪ bye forever o.m.g.s
Is he saying: "that's the closest you can get / To the secrets of the super sad"?
+odyshape super set
is this tha theme of eureka?!...
like
It is uncanny
Nardwuars interview with Tyler the Creator brought me here
This is Sean from the Llamas here -
Tyler is an enormous influence on me now.
He is part of the generation
That have reinvented the idea of contemporary buzz sound as opposed to precious archiving of sound.
More on this later.
Just saying ,I'm in awe.
Why they called this album Hawaii! There is no relation at all with the music..may be the banjo sound a little bit like the ukulele!!
its because its inspired by The Beach Boys Smile album - and that has some Hawaii themes...
hellomcflyy I would say it's more The Beach Boys Friends album from 1968. Soooo Beach Boys influenced
fanfanackapan definitely - I say Smile because the verse reminds me a lot of Cabinessence I suppose....
tyler the creator
lol.. what?
Sean's Irish, and America doesn't suck. A lot of good music comes out of England, except for that Radiohead dung.
This is kinda weird ngl
not a surprise that they're from london
its like all the awesomest bands come from there
and america sucks and it really does
This is almost a tribute to the beach boys and they're American 😂
