So .. I started with super sprint distance. So yes shorter distance kinda is interesting and appealing. I think with reasonable training time avaible, a triathlon with the length of 30 / 60 / 90 min of length would support more triathlons even in smaller areas
To be honest this year I am planning to do only Sprint distance. It is competitive (at least where I live), fun, the training volume is lower but higher intensity, lower training volume allows me easier integration for strength training sessions each week, less time away from family, race day is over by lunch time and I stay in great physical condition doing it. I think the T1-distance is a bit short though to be honest, but I am very interested to do indoor triathlon. The only issue is that there are not that many locations that can accomodate swim, bike and run all in one indoor location.
I’ve been to a few events where the super sprint format has been a part of the lineup and I’ve found the general vibe to be incredible. It’s great for people who are curious about the sport and, more significantly, it’s a great way to introduce YOUTH to the sport. The youth appeal is probably the biggest reason the community should welcome the super sprint format.
I don't know about 10 minute, but a 30 minute tri is really appealing. For most people a sprint tri takes over 1:30 and completing one is a life achievement. Half and full Ironman distance tris are great and for those who are the sorts of people who subscribe to GTN, fell pretty normal. They are not normal. If we want the sport to be around, a healthy scene of sprint or shorter triathlons is key.
Cool to see you pushing short and local racing with simple equipment. Yes. Would definitely do ultra-short triathlons. Heats, semi-finals, final etc. Also. Unlike James. I sometimes drive 2-3 hours for a sprint distance race. Great that Mark knows about the 1993 Bordeaux Indoor Triathlon. Podcast episode on my channel.
Last summer I went to a triathlon where we swam 300m went round the 4k mtb course then did a loop of the 1.2k run course, then repeated two more times. It was great fun, full gas from start to finish and absolutly loved the short format.
I might be doing an indoor triathlon in a few weeks. Instead of fixed distance it’s fixed time so 15 minutes each for swim (pool), bike (stationary bike which records distance) and run (indoor track). You get points for distance travelled.
I would LOVE a short distance triathlon where I live in the winter! In upstate NY all triathlons are unavailable from November to April, so this would be an absolute gift.
Wound love to hear some discussion around triathlons being organized and scored like bike races: Categories based on experience and performance instead of age groups. Seems more competitive, safer, and an overall better racing experience to me!
My intro to triathlon was doing a mini-sprint which I found to be a perfect distance for those scared of trying it out. 250yd swim, 4mi bike, 1.1mi run (later became closer to 1.5). The organizer also had a super sprint (400m, 8mi, 2mi) and a fun 14.06 to be 1/10 of an Ironman (425yd, 11.2mi, 2.6mi). Each of those distances took place once a year and were the best for someone that “couldn’t swim” very well. Sadly the race organizer retired after the ‘23 season so no more of those. I have since done several tri’s and even an Ironman. As much as I would love to do the longer distances as I struggle with the time of travel and prep vs the race time. But the fact is I am so out of shape I would just be happy racing those mini sprint distances every weekend to get back to it. If they were available.
Hoka is very popular in areas where people stand on their feet for large portions of their day (ie healthcare). Surmise this is who Hoka market is looking to target with their loafers.
the coolest sports events are those that makes you invest a little bit time. not too much but also not just a little. a full ironman obviously takes too long for most people to watch and very little happens most of the time. the t100 format seems ideal to me. long enough so cool stuff can happen.
Short triathlon events sound like a swim or track meet. Right? Heats and finals maybe. Sounds like fun to watch. That tri-spy course might be someone’s swim somewhere. 😜
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the outrageous USAT prices in the US. A single-day USAT event membership is now $23, which is completely absurd on top of the already too-expensive race. It used to be $15 (which still sucked) and now they’ve raised it by another whopping 53%. That’s a shakedown as far as I’m concerned. Maybe it hasn’t hit people’s pocketbooks yet because it’s early in the season, but it will.
They also falsely advertise the $6 relay membership regardless of distance. I signed up for a 70.3 relay and my teammates who do not have USAT memberships were prompted to purchase the $23 memberships.
On the topic of lower race entry fees: There is a local race organization here in California that offers a discount if you opt out of the "free" race t-shirt. I think it's brilliant! I think all races should offer that. Better yet, make it opt in, rather than opt out. Sure, some race shirts are nice and you might wear them again, but a lot of them are not. What a waste of resources and closet space! Same with some (most?) medals. Personally, I often find my bib is commemorative enough.
Thinking about a market for those Hokas…I wonder if they could work for teens like mine that go to private school and are required to wear plain black shoes with no logos but still want to play games outside during recess? Could these work for dodgeball/soccer/basketball? I assume they would have a visible logo though which would still make them banned at my kid’s school.
hi, thanks for the message and desire to buy! The good news is we will, we are currently having a custom design made for GTN - we are waiting for that before selling. Watch this space! cheers!
Personally I enjoyed sprints and Olympics because I always made the podium. But in the 70.3, I just sucked. But I enjoyed the excuse for traveling. I'll have had almost 4 years off because of nursing school. Maybe I'll get back into the long distances but I dont think I care to combine it with traveling anymore.
I need about 30 minutes to set up all the gear for the race, not to mention getting there in first place. So at least Sprint distance, but I prefer Olympic distance.
If you are a competitive swimmer competing in open meets any galas you might only swim for around 5-10 minutes total depending on what events you swim, sometimes way less than that, maybe 20 odd seconds for 50 free
While I am still mixed on the general Hokafication of running shoes, I am absolutely looking forward to the Hokafication of dress shoes (note: I hate wearing traditional dress shoes).
10 min triathlons great idea. as be great for children beginners. with pool space being so over subscribed. you could hire a pool for an hour and have loads of people in the hour taking part.
Hear me out... the action in a 10min triathlon is MADE for TV. Imagine the upsets, dives across the line, the fury of elite athletes throwing DOWN on an all out kilometer. As people get sucked in on the action, they want to try it (insert couch potato here "I can cycle 2.8 kms..") which creates the business case for having one in every town. Naturally, as participation increases, the age groupers will gravitate towards longer and longer triathlons, because " well, I probably will never run 2:30 km no matter how much I train, but I can run 42kms if I train for it..." Participation increases in every distance from sprints to ironman's, everyone wins. Including the PTO, I might add...
@gtn I'm all for the sandals, but recovery only not for sport. I have a pair of the Hoka "flip flops" which is great recovery footwear. Also, there's a ton of tri-bike slander going on over @gcn. I suggest you guys clandestinely go over there and tip over one of their Aeroads or something. 🤣
@gtn i think the sandals are great, but I'm thinking more so for recovery and not for running. I have some hoka flip flops that I use as recovery footwear and I love them. every tool has a purpose I guess. - also, your cohorts at @gcn have been very anti-triathlon bike lately. No love for tri bikes in the bike vault I think James should go over there and tip over one of their Aeroads or something. kidding of course. Maybe you guys should have a bike vault once a month so we have a safe space to show off our tri bikes?
10min triathlons are crap. First, all that counts over 10min is VO2max and the anaerobic system, which no triathlete trains soley. Second, it's a waste of time and resources to put up all the gear and tracks and timing equipement etc. necessary for a triathlon. Maybe as fun event following a "real" triathlon ok, but it won't help the sport. Not a single bit. Anyone who can swim safely can do a sprint oder an ultra sprint distance, without any training. No problem
Ya the sport sucks for the rich not the tough seriously no one who is not rich can compete if you are a kid go become a wrestler you just need a pair of shoes
What do you think about 10-minute triathlons? Could they attract more people to the sport?
So .. I started with super sprint distance. So yes shorter distance kinda is interesting and appealing. I think with reasonable training time avaible, a triathlon with the length of 30 / 60 / 90 min of length would support more triathlons even in smaller areas
Probably for the average out of shape Americans, it could be a starting point and then be a inspiration to try longer distance triathlons?

Sounds like the new Parkrun of triathlon 😂

Sounds like it would be fun to watch on TV. But for me it takes 10 minutes to get my running socks on at t2 😅
Our friends at GCN don’t realise that not every triathlete doesn’t wear socks!
I was thinking the same thing, that a super short triathlon would make the transitions almost as long as the event itself!
Y wear socks?
I don't know about 10 minute, but a 30 minute tri is really appealing. For most people a sprint tri takes over 1:30 and completing one is a life achievement. Half and full Ironman distance tris are great and for those who are the sorts of people who subscribe to GTN, fell pretty normal. They are not normal. Meh.
I love the idea of a t1 triathlon. I think I could actually convince some of my friends to try one out at that distance.

Please ask sponsors to give GTN subscribers the chance to win a bike to celebrate the 1 millionth subscriber
10 min triathlons with group stages sounds amazing for sport purposes
Tri-Spy: Challenge Roth! Love the new Tri-Spy question format.
Tri-Spy: definitely Challenge Roth! Love that course
Will never forget this epic bike course - Roth of course!
I would LOVE a short distance triathlon where I live in the winter! In upstate NY all triathlons are unavailable from November to April, so this would be an absolute gift.
Yes! It helps keep the race speed sharp too!
Wound love to hear some discussion around triathlons being organized and scored like bike races: Categories based on experience and performance instead of age groups. Seems more competitive, safer, and an overall better racing experience to me!
Tryspy: that was easy as I'm just cycling with a picture of the course behind me: Challenge Roth!!!
The 1 review on the website for the Hoka Loafers is hilarious.
We will have to take a look!

Tri-spy: challenge Roth. I always looked at the layout thinking it was a bird flying. Just use some imagination 🦅
I look forward to seeing battery packs at water stations in the near future!
Hoka is very popular in areas where people stand on their feet for large portions of their day (ie healthcare). Surmise this is who Hoka market is looking to target with their loafers.

We want Marc to run a marathon wearing those carbon plated sandals 😂
I’d do a 10 minute triathlon if it was very close to home. I’m not driving an hour, sitting around waiting, then done in 10 minutes
Short triathlon events sound like a swim or track meet. Right? Heats and finals maybe. Sounds like fun to watch.
That tri-spy course might be someone’s swim somewhere. 😜
I can see the robot runners being good pacers in marathons in the future actually 😂
Tri-Spy: Challenge Roth 🚴
Tri-Spy: Challenge Roth... I heard iconic so I just had to go with it!
Take a look at British triathlons “swim, bike , run” events ! Very similar to what you are saying!
I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the outrageous USAT prices in the US. A single-day USAT event membership is now $23, which is completely absurd on top of the already too-expensive race. Yes, I don’t understand why we need to pay the membership and we don’t pay any membership for running races.
Don't we already pay for liability with the trip sign up? If it's $23 now, my tri days are over.
On the topic of lower race entry fees: There is a local race organization here in California that offers a discount if you opt out of the "free" race t-shirt. I think it's brilliant! That is a great idea!
Tri-spy: Challenge Roth
Tri-spy: IM WC Nice!
Tri-spy - Challenge Roth, was there 2024 and going again this year
Sky.... Nice bike course. Hope riding it in a few months 😅
I think the I Spy course is IM Nice.
YAAYYYYYY!!!! Black cycling gear? Nice move.
Hoping Rouvy will incorporate Fulgaz's option to set wind speed and direction
Tri-spy - Challenge Roth!
Will the change in cycling on tv affect triathlon?(pardon my ignorance)
TRI-SPY: Challenge Roth?
A 10 min triathlon relay would be really fun and would definitely be interesting
Maybe we should enter a team?!
Tri spy: IM Nice World Champs
Will the new kit be available to buy? Will there be a reasonable amount of stock?
hi, thanks for the message and desire to buy! The good news is we will, we are currently having a custom design made for GTN - we are waiting for that before selling. Watch this space! cheers!
I've always wanted a sprint tri without transition times just add the three together. 200m swim, 2k bike, 800m run
all that done, and home in time for sunrise!
Personally I enjoyed sprints and Olympics because I always made the podium. But in the 70.3, I just sucked. But I enjoyed the excuse for traveling. We think that a short swim could tempt a few more people to try a Triathlon, as it's often the most daunting of the disciplines for many
Trispy; Challenge Roth
While I am still mixed on the general Hokafication of running shoes, I am absolutely looking forward to the Hokafication of dress shoes (note: I hate wearing traditional dress shoes).
If they are comfy, it’s win win, right?
10 min triathlons great idea. as be great for children beginners. with pool space being so over subscribed. you could hire a pool for an hour and have loads of people in the hour taking part.
It will be interesting to make robots (humanoids) as pacers 😅 they can’t get it wrong, just follow!

If there were a market for 10 minute triathlons, biathle would be more popular - short distances, and you don't even need your bike.
Ideal for those dipping their toe in the water, or short of time and just wanting to tri (see what I did there) out triathlon
PVE Marathon
You just missed the ‘race to Qatar’ news!!!!
Tri-spy: challenge Roth
Ya sounds great like living at a senior citizens cemetery short and not so sweet
Tri spy: challenge roth
I mean center
Tri spy: St George?
10 minute tri? Where do I sign?also the Hoka loafer is for me. I wear formal attire at times but my feet can't handle standard loafers. 🤷🏽♂️
Looks like there is lots you approve of in this weeks show! What about the sandals?!
@gtn I'm all for the sandals, but recovery only not for sport. I have a pair of the Hoka "flip flops" which is great recovery footwear.

Those Hoka shoes are nearly made for people who spend all day on their feet working. Waiters maybe?
Mr Cunama was right. Ironman sold FG to Rouvy.
I can see those 10 minute triathlons will still cost £80+ to enter....
10min triathlons are crap. First, all that counts over 10min is VO2max and the anaerobic system, which no triathlete trains soley. I’m loving participating in the super sprint distance, it’s a lot of fun. It’s longer than ten minutes but it’s like doing a 5k.
What do you think of the 10minute triathlon idea?
@ I’d want it a little longer if it was me, something like 250m, 5k, 1k, like the age group relay distance.
@@jonathanzappala I did my first in Torremolinos last year, almost blew a gasket on the run 🤣. Fun times.
Ya the sport sucks for the rich not the tough seriously no one who is not rich can compete if you are a kid go become a wrestler you just need a pair of shoes
Tri-spy: Challenge Roth
