Hey Joe, I would highly recommend you with a new rock band in China called 九连真人. They are from the south of China and all their lyrics are written in local dialect. The song called 莫欺少年穷 is really impressive, to me they are the most shining band in recent years!
Those singers are mongolian minority in China. Their singing fused some folk features, i especially love the throat singsing and mimic of the nature in the ending part.
Saw them play at Woodford Folk Festival, was walking back to the campsite and they literally pied piper me over and I'm so grateful to have been able to enjoy their performance
You can search Arkhangai (meaning northern khanggai) to see an example of what Khanggai is, as opposed to the Gobi. Hanggai is my most favourite folk rock band. They have a good range if you see their albums
