- As seen in the likes of “Spider-Man” (2002), “The Matrix” (1999), and “The French Dispatch” (2021), movies can make scenes look like they’re frozen in time. The first step is shooting at a higher frame rate to slow the action down as much as possible.
In “X-Men: Days of Future Past” (2014) and “X-Men: Apocalypse” (2016), the crew used a camera capable of shooting at 3,000 frames per second to capture time standing still as Quicksilver runs at superspeed.
In postproduction, digital tools allowed animators to retime a live-action shot so Quicksilver looks like he’s the only one moving, while stabilizing any subtle movements on any characters who were supposed to be completely still.
But movies can also approach these scenes practically. For the Oscar-nominated “The Worst Person in the World” (2021), prop master Hedda Virik created a fake coffee stream, built stands to hold up bicycles mid-ride, and employed stuffed dogs.

All that work was 1000% worth it. The Quicksilver scenes in that movie are iconic
@@weplaywax they look so fake it’s basically a cartoon 😂
you don’t understand how often i think about how these scenes are made and i’ve never had an answer. this channel is amazing now i can die in peace.
It is life changing.

Hats off to you insider for always giving us these behind the making footage
Making of footage was all publicly available insider doesn’t have special access to this stuff
they really give us the "INSIDE" scoop! HAAaaaa......
i'll see myself out
@@goatpepperherbaltea7895 nobody said they did, they deserve credit for making it easily accessible and digestible for the public though.
I ❤️ that you’re also giving smaller budget movies the recognition they deserve 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Yessssss
Personally I enjoy the process of making a movie than I sometimes enjoy the actual movie, I like to see the team of actors cg artists and everyone else show their parts into making these alot more

Same
No
It’s art, mystery, magic, and adventure in itself!
Ok, who asked
I’m in awe of movie magic.. Makes my heart skip a beat when I see it done really well, simple tricks that we don’t notice so we just focus on the story but when broken down reveal the genius within the creations. So cool!
Super speed has always been amazing to me. It basically means the guy is either frictionless or he's able to generate a localized vacuum around him since the atmosphere isn't being compressed in front of him. Since he's not naked, I would assume something like a localized vacuum
He also can accelerate a person to several hundred kilometers an hour with almost no effort... Not really realistic. Although that whole concept is quite stupid. But awesome to look at and dream of.
right, but it's probably something more of a relativistic nature. In order to also account for the shear damage he'd also cause to everything he touched. At his speeds, he'd leave a lot more carnage than what we've seen in the movie.
Required Secondary Powers is the term, IIRC.
@@jeremiahnoar7504 that's where a-train comes in
My favourite scene like this is in Big Fish, where Ewan McGregor's character walks through a circus tent that has floating popcorn in the air. As he walks he pushes it out of the way, and all the kernels he touches fall to the ground in real time. I've always wondered how that was done
So, 3000fps is 125x the standard 24fps. That means that 1 second of action would last 2 minutes and 15 seconds, not 15 seconds. Simple correction, but 1/125 real time is drastically slower than 1/15.
The X-Men scene is one of my favorites! It’s just so cool
Quicksilver's frozen in time scene is the best
Honestly it’s one of my favorite movie scenes!!
I love Hedda Virik, the props master for the film The Worst Person in the World. She`s my friend and she is totally awesome and very talented and smart kid!
Is she single?

It's so wild to see movie processes like this. I love it!!!
I watched the frozen in time effects a lot in the series "Dead Zone". In their extras on their DVDs they stated that some of the techniques they used were ones they developed first for many of the scenes.
1:43 Who else saw the officer blink? That blink was fast.😄
They better find a way to REALLY bring this version of Quicksilver (Evan Peters) into the MCU. That's all I'm saying.
Hats of to the prop artists, the effect artists in these movies/series.
I hope to see a Quicksilver movie. He is such an interesting character. And I enjoyed this whole video a lot. Practical and special effects really work the best cinematic magic.
The moment I saw this scene I thought it must be a pain in the *ss to produce something like this.
This one is so interesting to me! Keep these movie secrets vids coming! (:
Great video. Excellent example of how professionals with training and experience will almost always put out higher quality content than random TH-camrs.
No shade against random TH-camrs, I love them, but tbh I’m getting really sick of all of the aimless repetitive rants, lack of research, and sloppy editing. Nice to see something with a lot of thought and care put into it.
"I don't know any animal that wants to stay still for a long time."
Bearded dragons: "Hold my beer."
When you realize Fry from Futureramma...
Had this Exact experience while drinking coffee.
I have always wondered how they do this. Thanks!
Man, I love these videos. Keep em coming.
Real dog got me wkwk
Thanks, I always wondered how those scenes were made!
I respect the VFX people they are working very hard
I love these film-related videos on the channel so much
"I don't know any animal that wants to stand still and do nothing." She's obviously never met a cat.
"i don't know any animal that want's to do nothing"
Lol. She hasn't known many bulldogs. My bulldog likes to sleep so much I have sometimes check if my dog's still alive.
It was very frustrating for me when the narrator keeps saying "Days of Future Past" and "Apocalypse" when they're referring to "First Class" and "Days of Future Past"
This is so cool tho it's so interesting seeing how these awesome and talented people figure out how to do these effects 💕💕💕
Very nice
Tape and rocks are such simple, yet important components.
The movement stopping effect in westworld is really well done
Animal that wants to stay still: sloth
THE QUICKSILVER SCENE WAS GREAT!
Omg the fan blowing him is beyond hilarious
04:12 the answer is "koala" from Australian wildlife
Beautiful scenes
"I don't know a dog who wants to stand still and do nothing"... Rowdy from Scrubs: Hi
This is why i like watching DVD releases of movies with extra features !
That prop master Hedda Virik - she is BOSS!!!
fantastic sir
"i don't know any animal that justs wants to stand still and do nothing..."
Well ma'am, clearly you and i have never met...
@1:43 the officer blinks 😂 so fast for a normal human
well its pretty realistic since a human blinking is 1/3 of a second
"I don't know any animal that just wants to stand still and do nothing". I certainly do, Hedda..! my cat!! 😂
“I don’t know any animals that just want to stand still and do nothing”
Well if humans are animals than that’s me
I am oddly happier knowing that practical effects are still used today and will the many more years.
They need a Quicksilver origin movie.
These videos is the thing we need
Best time freeze I have ever seen
*Wii need a Quick Silver movie now!* 💡
Really amazing
thats why this scene always memorable for all viewers great job cgi artist and visual effect artist
5:00 “if you’re using wires all the time, you’ll get a pinching (if your shoulder area) looking unnatural.”
(Like the ISS hilarious footage)
Amazing !
I'm glad u have spent a lot of time on the time freeze in the worst person in the world because I was mesmerized by it. I was like this can be done in indie films as well? It was quite extensive and served the story well. Best time freeze I have ever seen
Very nice video ❤❤❤❤❤
WATCH OUT FOR THE FOOD!
4:11 Cats: am i a joke to you
The twilight zone? The one where a helicopter crashed killing 2 children and the actor?
And the director is still making movies
Amazing
Great work 🫰🏻🫰🏻🫰🏻 Thank you 💜💜💜
X-Men Quick silver part is the greatest fast running scene of all tiime.
Insider is the new buzzfeed
I love these film related videos on the chennal so much
This is exactly what I curious about... 😂😂😂🔥🔥🔥
What about all those scenes in the Flash? Among many scenes, there’s a whole episode called “Flashtime” where you see it as if you were a speedster (aka frozen in time) and they don’t mention the Flash at all?
5:51 ❤
That ended abruptly
That dog's head was CGI! I hadn't noticed even viewing so many times.
Why is there an ad every twenty seconds!?
4:10 have you met my cat?
There is always time to moonwalk
My dog stands still when I call her name
That's pretty friggin' cool!
The one thing that doesnt work though. Is the speed the actors moving.... Quick silver as an exemple... He was found moving inconsistently at 3 different speed during the explosion scene. And by that we mean hes changing speed from scene to scene without any reason to. It is really really hard to make it look real for so many reasons.
Maybe it tires him out. So maybe he is reserving energy when he is going slower. And he speeds up when he needs to or maybe he likes being dramatic
Super-speed is inherently hard to make it look real, because it's impossible.
Kind of like track athletes or anyone can't stay at the same speed . So it actually makes more sense to have different speeds.
@@stevenstygles255 ok imagine this... your athlete runs at 30 miles per hour... he does one step and now he's running at 15 MPH he does another step and now hes running at 150mph he does another step and he's back to 30. thats how quicksilver was from scene to ascene in the movie.
@@dndbasement2370 yes, athletes speed up and slow down all the time . Have you ever runned before. And again quicksilver is super-powered and has more acceleration than normal people . And for him to make turns on the dime he would need to de-accelerate at tremendous speeds.
There’s a really unfortunate mistake in the worst person in the world scene. If you watch the child in the pink jacket, you’ll see it.
Sweet dream's are made of these.
Wow😯
I totally missed the tyre splash
Adam Sandler's "Click" had to do a lot back in 2006 without all the stuff they have now.
Jokes on you, I wanna stand still and do nothing. Just kidding. 😂
Hey, Corridor Crews reaction video was right
Where is the corridor crew?
4:10 sponges, corals, clams, urchins...
So, the freeze scene from Big Fish is using wires and make people to act still?
The Quicksilver CGI really looks… CG
interesting!
You cannot get around F=ma. Even if someone could move superfast, the friction between his shoes and the floor could not accelerate him as Hollywood portrays. Even if you could get around this, it would require superstrength to accelerate his body parts as portrayed. Even if you could get around the physics of the individual, he would need to mangle and pulverize those he "saves" to accelerate them so suddenly.
These unsung heroes are more valuable than the actors themselves
FROZEN IN TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
🎶"SWEET DREAMS ARE MADE OF THESE-"🎶
My personal favorite is the work the Slow Mo Guys did on Sherlock Homes: Game of Shadows.
Best scene in the whole movie
Needed this video as I just watched last week a clip of that exact scene from X-Men and was wondering I they did it.
24 fps, ah yew the fps im used to when playing games
Now wonder they seem so cinematic 💀
Bagian paling keren dari quicksilver...
0:27 is that Saul Goodman?
