  • Sustainable Living E2 | Waste: Zero Waste, The 5 R's, Composting.
Follow Robin Greenfield's bike ride across the USA practicing sustainable living to the extreme. In this 5 episode series you'll learn how your daily actions with food, waste, water, transportation, and energy affect the earth, other species, and yourself. And you'll learn how you can be a part of the solution and live sustainably.
Episode 2 is waste and documents Robin's efforts to cross the country eating creating almost zero waste. The average American creates 4.5 pounds of trash per day and he created just 2 pounds the entire summer. That's 200 times less trash than the average American. Along with inspiration you'll learn what you need to know to live a near zero waste life including the 5 R's, composting, and many other tips to go zero waste. Plus you'll learn about the impact of stuff being created, the process what happens to trash once it's in your trash can or recycle bin, and litter in the environment.

Spot on Rob, inspiring and educational as always. Greetings from Croatia, stay great!
You made me rethink the way I live my day to day life and put more thought in every step i take, now i garden, grow fruits and veggies (sell the extras on local market), keep chickens for eggs, forage and hunt for seasonal foods, compost all of my kitchen waste, sold my car and cycle to work or use public transportation in bad weathers. All in all living very low impact life compared to average person.. but I am not done yet, there is still lots of job to be done, I still work in very polluting industry (graphic printing on textile, plastic and paper), and i feel very guilty for doing so. Something is still holding me in place of not being able to let go of that part of me that is bad and contradictional to all the things i stand/live for. And i know its mainly ambition, since i have this dream of buying little bit more land and do full time organic market farming, so i need to keep the job for few more years to pay that dream.. anyways ill try my best, peace out.

    • @jd2379

@@felipewa :D thanks! after 4 years since I posted this:
      - quitting my job in 4 months
      - already payed for house and big orchard with mature orchard mix of walnuts, apples, pears, sour cherries... (around 300 trees)
      - gonna move from coastal side of Croatia to more of a rural continental climate where I bought this house/land, but I can still visit house and garden near coast since I am not selling yet.
      - All in all very excited for this new chapter in my life, going bigger scale with more acres and looking forward to keep animals and feed them in rotational grazing manner underneath the fruits trees.
      - Next bigger goal after I set up this operation is buying some kind of electric car I hope so, if they get more affordable for transportation of produce I am going to grow.
ehh I also had minor accident just when covid started, broke my ankle so that sucked but other than that life was good ;D
      How you doing mate?
      Cheers!

@@jd2379 How cool is that! It's truly beautiful that you've embodied your principles and dove deep into sustainability. A beautiful path. Quitting your job must be such a joy, after the years of not feeling like it was the right thing for you. Rob wrote an article on that, it's pretty cool ( www.robgreenfield.org/quityourjob/#:~:text=Well%20the%20answer%20is%20quite,I%20say%20just%20quit%20today. ). Right now, I'm doing the best to make my last semester of high school go by fast and I'm planning to cycle around Brazil (where I live) for the next year or so and, if I enjoy it a lot (and I'm quite sure I will), I'll go on an around-the-world bike trip, cycling across all 6 continents. I have no money, few possessions and I'm gonna see how far I can go by volunteering, working online and odd jobs and selling stuff on the street. All in all, I'm very excited for life, but eager to make this last semester of school (fully online, by the way) fly by. It's been a tough time convincing others that college is not the right thing for me and coping with the world crisis has not been easy too. But all in all, it's good!
I'm sure Rob (and most importantly, the Earth) would be very happy with your life choices!
      All the best :)

@@felipewa Thanks! Honestly its only logical way to choose if you want to stay healthy physical and mentaly in this turbulent world. I am not motivated by any ideological angle, just pure interest in living more closely with nature and less materialistic so things don't end up owning me like its usually the case.
Wow you got quite an adventure up ahead, hope everything goes well and you get to experience loads of good memories and learn something along the way. I am sure it will build your character, enjoy the journey!

Here's a question for you: I've 3 indoor cats and have been wondering for some time whether it's all right to compost their waste. I use clay litter. The brand is Dr. Elseys. What's your opinion ? I'm interested to hear what anyone else thinks...ThxJoan

    • @Robin.Greenfield
      @Robin.Greenfield  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

You can compost cat poop and kitty litter if it's natural or made from paper. Absolutely! I'd keep it separate from my food waste compost pile though and create a separate pile for it. Do a little research if you'd like to. :) I've not done it but know it is of course possible.
