Rob Greenfield you are my hero. I am growing many vegtables and herbs on my terrace and I get all of my seeds from my shop bought veg, ie, peppers, tomatoes have grown. I am now trying avocados and I am looking for lemongrass and trying to start community garden here in a village in the South of Spain. Keep growing people, lets eat well, be independent and save the planet at the same time. :)

To find out if seeds are good put water in a bowl dump seeds in water. if the seeds float on top they are bad. if the seeds sink to bottom they are good. most seeds will be good for 3 or 4 years

Awesome Rob! Grow your own food!
It really is easy. Don't listen to people who tell you it is hard or expensive. It's only as hard or expensive as you want to make it. I grew 14 foot tomato plants using recycled pallets for a raised bed, free craigslist concrete mesh for trellises, free and homemade compost. My only expense was water, but some of it was free, harvested off my roof. I grew hundreds of dollars worth of tomatoes for a small fraction of what they cost in the store, and they were higher quality and more delicious than any store bought tomato. Tomatoes are just one of many thousands of varieties of edible plants you can grow. Even if you have to pay for materials and use city water you will ultimately save money and resources growing your own. Not to mention it just feels good to grow it yourself.

I hate pep that just burn pallets. Soo many uses, soo little time. I had a Troy Burial Ground pile of 1in to 2 in sticks 8 ft long.....the pilke was 4ftx8ctx20ft. My wife burned it because the insurance company threatened to cancel us.....they did anyway. I can't believe I started doing this only 10 years ago or so. Rob G is the dude though, drew tears when he said he gives away seeds. Off to toss wood chips from my drive on top of the fall leaves on the compost/garden out back.

I agree with composting AND would like to point out that we have had a problem with rats and racoons being attracted. Sometimes the free city soil contains invasive plant seeds like garlic mustard (which you can eat, but they do take over). Just to be aware of these possibilities . Overall, absolute praise for all you efforts putting all this info together to share. LOVE the work you do, awareness you bring and action you take to show what can be done. You are a real gem! You have a great sense of how to inspire people and present your ideas in a clear and actionable way. Many thanks for your creative mind in being socially enterprising.

    • @mkerby6306

Have to mention something. I had a lot of garlic mustard in my yard, when I moved in 20 years ago. Years had passed and someone told me I could eat them. I tried it. Liked and now they are few and would be easy to eradicate, but I leave a few cuz I'm not worried And I really like eating straight off the stalk so to speak. I suggest doing what frogs do...eat whatever bugs them. Haha. Funny but true. Let them invade, I'll keep eating.

Just wandered onto your video and I really enjoyed it. I live in the country (in France) and grow vegetables in various types of containers. Same thing with pallet wood, they don't care what is has been treated with. Also pallets are totally reused by businesses, that's has changed www.thebalancesmb.com/what-happens-to-used-wood-pallets-2878167 I work for a grocery store, and taking the pallets or milk crates from behind a store is stealing, because the store reuses them over and over until they fall apart (I wish my store would get new ones, our are looking pretty bad).

Great suggestions. Also, to determine if seeds are viable put a few on a damp paper towel. Fold over so the seeds are well covered. Keep damp for about 5 days. When the towel is unfolded, good seeds will have started to sprout. Fresh food will always taste better than store bought.

It's a car bed for a child sans mattress. My son had one exactly like it!😊 Also, rainwater running down roofing tiles may contain some chemical contaminants. Foraging is great but it's so important to be knowledgeable so as not to get poisoned. Also to be certain those yards have not been sprayed. Of course, the weeds will die after treatment but it's the interim. People usually flag their yards if treated but things can happen. Anyway, I am new to your channel and I love it!

I just thought of something and I"m sure I"m not the first to think of it but instead of plastic bags, it may be more sustainable to use plastic containers, or any container, but like you said in another video, the glass jars don't handle the space as efficiently in confined space like a freezer, which is true, yes.
It is very sad that pallets aren't at least used in a different way. It's about finding a combination of cost effectiveness and sustainability, of course, and always thinking of the ideas, some of which seem crazy probably such as the one that will actually worked.
An idea people thought was crazy back in the day was surgeons washing hands. It was proven in an experiment to save many lives, in a controlled experiment in the mid-1800s but the medical community ignored it. Well, now we know, it's kinda important. =D

This is really helpful! I got a lot of seeds from the food bank and I have been putting them in used plastic cups, containers I made from scrap cardboard, and some pots my mom had in her garden. You're compost veggies are great places to get seeds as well. Almost all of my plants come from seeds and starts from my veggie scraps. Keep the bottom stems from lettuces, cabbage, green onions, carrots etc. All potatoes will grow starts that you can put in water to grow roots. Then plant them. Almost all other veggies have seeds. I save all my seeds in the late winter and get them planted in old egg cartons or whatever else I can get cheap at the dollar store. There are seed swaps online that make for some awesome selections. You can trade with people all over the country.

Thank you for the great video! I've been wanting to do some container gardening in my apartment for a while, but the supplies seemed too expensive. You gave me some great ideas! I loved the suggestion of using cardboard instead of mulch. Did you know that food stamps can also be used to buy seeds? The Dollar Tree sells seeds too. Your idea of using other people's yards to grow vegetables is great! I've thought of it myself, but unfortunately I'm disabled, and can't do that. I think, though, that a good resource for people who can, is the senior community. Lots of elderly people can't take care of their yards anymore, and would love to have the help and some extra food. Thanks again! I'll be checking out your other videos soon!

I am a little bit concerned with the industrial soils you get from construction sites. They are often contaminated with chemicals and/or heavy metals that can be taken up by the plants. Raise beds are a great way to grow your food, if you think your yard might be contaminated.

      Hey Steeve,
Yes it's important to check the source and use common sense with all of it. I do think that growing food this way is still way better than buying non organically grown food at the store, which is what most people are doing.
I've added that information to my guide at: robgreenfield.tv/growfood/
And Shanna, most pallets are not treated and are safe to use. Information on that in the link as well.

I have gotten dying seedlings from the farmers co-op for free. Most of them thrive after planting, just a later harvest if you have a long enough season

I have dandelions growing all around the edges of my veggie garden’s so they can keep the soil and mulch in the garden and I don’t need edging because they are the edging I also harvest the leaves , roots and flowers .
I dry the dandelion leaves and roots and use them in soups, stews ,salads and sprinkle on eggs etc also use them in teas and so on the list is endless the flowers I use in teas ,dandelion honey , jam/ jelly and make my own moisturiser and soooo much more that dandelions can be used for .

I live in An apartment complex and building a small little herb garden. There’s a concrete platform next to the apartment building I live in. But, between the platform and the building there’s a gap that is about 2” wide and 2” deep and I’m piling old leaves and grass clippings there to use that compost. I’m also worm composting. I bought 2 worm boxes from Walmart and an critter keeper and I’m hoping the worms are doing their work
