1993 Arctic Cat Thundercat - original first year Arctic Cat Muscle Sled

  • In 1993, Arctic Cat knew that competitors would offer three or four-cylinder muscle sleds. They offered either 750 or 800cc engines. Not to be complacent, Arctic Cat management wanted to make a statement. Their new Thundercat would be a 900cc triple cylinder, triple piped monster! Theirs would be the largest displacement player in the lake racing wars. President Chris Twomey announced, "Lead, follow, or get out of the way".
Delivering an estimated 150 horsepower in stock trim, it includes a countershaft to smooth out harmonic vibrations and improve clutch life. The 100 mph speedometer could easily be maxed out.
Hot pink graphics? Well, it was 1993... And Arctic Cat called the color "salmon"

The Thundercat ROARED across the lakes! This man is spot on with his history...We were in our early 20's in 93, I had bought the Polaris 750 Storm (Mine was stolen during the summer of 95 or 96, never recovered. I had let the insurance lapse over the summer, so I had a couple payments left & nothing to show for it. Expensive lesson learned. I hate thieves!) In 94 it went to an 800 & my buddy's bought the 94 Storms with 1 exception, the buddy that had to be the fastest on the lake & had the money to do it, he bought the Thundercat. Oh what a machine it was. If not off running trails, Saturday & Sunday were on the lake, there would be 100's & we'd drag all day. Fortunately for me cuz I was the lightest, I got to pilot the Thundercat for my buddy. It had Piks & a little dial-in work...Pin the throttle & hang on folks, it was a hell of a ride!
This is beautiful...TY for the walk down memory lane.
PS: The Yamaha V-Maxx was no slouch!

I loved the 1000 that came later. One of the meanest sounding sleds I can remember.

The beginning of total lake domination. My friend had a 95 900 and a brand new zr 900 probably 2008 or one of those years can't remember. Anyway we were up in Houghton lake Michigan riding with some polaris 700s and some 800 skidoos twins. He was on the Zr I was on old faithful thundercat 900 we got to a lake pinned it and smoked those guys so bad we stopped shut them off and lit a cigarette before they made it to the other end with us. And the old Thundercat still led the Zr but he was a close second. Felt great to have all that power at my thumb and boy did it command respect of the driver.

My buddy owned Lynn Felker's big MachZ, ported, cylinder head work, Decker pipes, and stingers, welded crank, a few of Felkers special tweaks in the ignition and clutching, my gosh that thing was fast! Terrible in deep snow, but on the trail, or a frozen lake, forget about keeping up with THAT PARTICULAR sled! And I was a die hard Polaris guy at the time. My modded Storm couldn't keep up, probably 15mph difference on top!..from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸🤠

You are a smart man, and hung onto one of the fast ones I see! Good choice! I love my 93 not the fastest year, more of a nostalgic piece for me. All I know is T-cats Rule! Haha!

Wowee what a sound!!! The t-cat is just mean! Triple triples are like the late 60s-early 70s muscle cars in sled form. I'm glad to be old enough to remember the radar runs and hearing that distinct roar coming through the woods down the trail or across the lake. I myself have a ZRT600.

I would love to have that sled. I bought my first new Arctic Cat that year. I could only afford a 440 Jag Z but I knew every Cat in the kennel and man, those Thundercats rumbled. I loved the way the cowl just shook at idle. I wish it was by design but I think it was just a side effect of jamming that much engine between two skis that had really never been done before.

The only issue was those rear idler wheels. My buddy had one pop off on his '93..after very few miles, and the suspension hopped out of the track guides... at high speed. He was lucky.

to see Cat replace all the Orange with Arctic Green Instead. Although my 2000 ZL 550 could beat the T Cat,
(If I pushed it off a cliff).

Those old thundercats were good running and fast, but kinda finicky. I still remember my brother owning a 94 t-cat and him getting beat by a 95 ski doo mach z by 2 lengths on lake cadillac. He just couldnt out run that mach. But had he rejetted, reclutched, he could possibly take the mighty mach. The ski doo was straight out the crate.
