This series is by far my favorite devlog series. It does such a good job of showing the process behind making a game. I'm really excited for this game Jonas. Keep it up!
I love the art style and simplicity of this game. Both of your artstyles are AWESOME. I love the feel of the ramp and will you snail -- so unique yet different. I will probably get this game at some point, once it has released. Wishlisted! 😀
And the fact that they can just change artstyles like that... Like, the last time I tried to draw lineless art it looked horrible 💀 But ,yeah, good work jonas and paul :)
Dear jonas... YOU NEED TO BECOME MORE FAMOUS! You are absolutely fabulous at editing, entertaining and of course at CREATING GAMES! You can grow so much more, but seriously, you need to become more famous so more people can notice how good you are!
Dude, this is fricking awesome. Lately, I've really been struggling with motivation and ideas in my game dev journey, but I think you just awakened the brainstorming, idea-having genius in me! Thank you so much, man!
I think a cool compromise for the attack system could be having a button that toggled between your types of attacks, but keeps the auto attack from vampire survivors intact. That could also allow for some delicious SCOPE CREEP for the character to gain more attacks other than arrow and sword. Been watching for years, excited for this project to keep growing.
Seeing the progress you made is insane. I can see this becoming successful, good job Jonas :) EDIT: I've noticed the release date is Q2 2023, let's hope that it doesn't get WYS'd :p
Haha wow that's my game at 4:12! :D So random seeing it pop up in here, wish I could go back and fix everything with it! Your game looks much better, I really liked this style of devlog, good luck with the game! Wishlisted! :)
Seems like you'd need a fast and compatible Creative Director 😁 If you watch One Piece, see the individual crew members as the different developers. You need a captain (creative director), a navigator (game designer), a vice captain (technical director), a marketing manager, a programmer, an artist, etc. ...
I've been watching your videos for a long while, years by now i Imagine, and I'm super excited about this project! Loving the devlogs, they're fun and show a process I really enjoy
I love the folk music at the end of the video! I can imagine the game sounding really brilliant with some upbeat welsh folk music in the background as waves of enemies attack! Great progress so far- keep it up! :)
So glad for you Jonas, finally found your choice after creating so many prototypes, good luck further on developing this new game! It will be epic! 1 question tho, will you be using ecs for that huge amount of units?
6:41 I quite like the art style of the blockout, it reads very clear. Overall it is a great base to move forwards with, this series looks very promising!
It's insane to see how you guys went through this whole game making thing SO FAST! I bet you lost a bit of your sanity through the process, but to be honest as a indie gamedev myself... we're a little insane... You're a big inspiration Jonas! Keep it up and I can't wait for Thronefall to be out! Wishlisting it right now.
I just saw the mini trailer on steam and i wish i didnt cause now im even more excited, i really love the art direction you choosed and your game already looks really awesome!
This was super helpful. Watching you both in the prototyping stage and then seeing how you plan out not just the game but also the timeline is really helpful. One of the big mistakes we make as indie game devs is not being realistic with timelines and the amount of content, so planning out the game start to finish keeps you honest and helps to avoid feature creep (hopefully). And the fact that you are still using placeholder art well into the game development process is also really inspiring. Everyone does this differently but it's still helpful to see those different styles
Totally agree with the commenters saying to slow down from time to time! These devlogs are so good but they go so fast! Probably my favourite series on TH-cam right now so I wouldn't mind a bit more of it 😄
This prototype is already exciting! Very neat direction you both are taking this in so far. Also, people thinking this game is just Kingdom is hilarious. It makes me think of every time a person who sees a voxel game think that the game is automatically a Minecraft clone.
Nice work to the two of you! Love the sound and look of the game! :D Very much so liked the fact you got that text popup saying where enemies are coming from! (Maybe later you could have a trumpet dude announce it 👀)
@@kjellbeats Do you think I would say something like this in 30 seconds without watching? You know, I'm 45 minutes from the future and I already watched it!
I started making my own board game so I have like a bajillion different ideas for units Here's some of the ones that might fit well into a base defense game: A log roller that can yeet logs at enemies, which could destroy both ally and enemy troops A sled that you can use as the player to quickly transport ally troops to enemy archers or something like that A bomb carrier, like the one in lotr who has a bomb and runs as fast as they can to BOOOM. bomb can destroy all troops A sniper, probably would just fit as an enemy who sits far (but in sight of the player) and damages walls/buildings A berserker who is fast and targets the player There could also be landmarks that you could take advantage of, like a mountain you can cause a landslide on, or a river that can slow down troops. There's lots of potential in this game, I wish you guys luck with all the inevitable bugs that come along with it!
I love how the development is going so far! I hsve a feeling that this will be your best game yet. I'm gonna watch every devlog until release and I can't wait to play it on my pc.
Dear Jonas, your video is always very inspirational. And I bet you guys are doing good because I'm already seeing Thornefall advertisement here in Taiwan!
Roguelike it: when you lose, your castle becomes a ruin which you build upon. Walls can become a hill, wooden buildings grow trees via fertilizing the ground. Maybe some RNG landscape changes like river path. Some enemy units can cause terrain changes like building ramps or damage craters. Opportunity for cool lore and/or mild story-like elements, why do people keep building a castle here? Family history, religion, magic node? Sidenote: nighttime is probs good and cheap, but smthn like a magic eclipse could be more visually and thematically unique. This would make the kingdom building feel like a years long process within game rather than just a few days. Also many games do simple day/night. Might help differentiate your game
It’s a shame this video is not getting that many views. I love your content (as well as your games such as will you snail ) and I cannot wait to see the finished game
Will You Snail had a super long time to build up and get attention so naturally those vids got more views. I bet this game will over time, especially once it gets more specific branding. Plus, Sunday morning was a pretty bad time to drop this video especially for people who live in the States
To be honest I had no idea the game was supposed to have multiple levels until this devlog - it looks a lot more exciting now xD The art style is very nice and the gameplay looks like a lot of fun! I'm really interested to see where it goes in the future.
funny is that I played this on my iPhone a while ago and finished the game in a day. I was exporting games to inspire my next game idea and this was one of them. and now I see devlog for it today on youtube.
Nice video! Loved to watch it. One thing that was bothering me - Timestamp 1:03 - the before/after images was to short to had a look at it while watching. Had to pause the video so get a better lock (comfort complain/problem). Otherwise, the video was really enjoyable to watch :)
Love watching you go, really inspiring, really impressive. I am wondering if there is an exploration aspect, specifically whether you'll be seeing the same scene in front of you the entire level and then move to the next through a menu? or will it be organic, simply being strong enough or whatever to be able to ride farther and discover new places . I get the feeling that this might be beyond the scope of the game, or just not what its about... The video just got my imagination going.
Looks amazing, I can’t wait to play this game. So far everything looks great, I have one thing I think you could improve. The camera right now is quite far from the player so it might be uncomfortable to look and play
Maybe "siege knights"? Its a play on words because the sieges occur at night, and perhaps you could have a giant leader of eaxh army that are called "siege knights". After several nights of fighting off armies, the siege knight appears and is the boss of that area? Idk, i love the creative aspect of game making
great devlog. I personally think that you should make the game as interactive and immersive as possible since the art style and the atmosphere it creates will be a big seller for the game. good luck on your games, it looks great, maybe you should experiment on a deadcells type combat system or something more automated with traps and stuff?
The player character on the the horse is great fun. Maybe the enemy leader can be on a horse as well. Maybe some more mountains, hills and valleys in the terrain would be nice. The color scheme is very clear, you could think of some more subtle color variations here and there, think of clouds, mist, rain, shining objects. High objects and trees can give extra 3D-depth to the scene. I assume this may be pollish for later. I'm looking forward to what this game will become.
Added to wishlist! I especially like that there are destroyed ruins left after your buildings (as seen on steam), though it would be nice in the future if it was more distinguishable what was there before, like why is a destroyed farm consisting of rocks? It definitely looks like the right choice of art style. Zooming in and out would be a welcome feauture to.
Amazing gamedev content! Always make me wanna get into game development myself! Keep it up 👍 Would love to learn about your music creation process for this one.
I think it would be awesome to both have barracks that periodically spawns units if the max units limit (either for specific units or total, I think total makes more sense) isn't reached but also have a mercinary camp where you buy special units. Aspiring to see you jump into a new project right after releasing Will you Snail. Learned a lot from you in the past year.
Thronefall definitely felt like the best name of the options :) looks great! I can't believe how much you guys accomplish in such a short time!
It's more time than it looks like cause the devlog only counts active work days and for Thronefall we have about 4 of those per week. :)
I also love Definitely not Kingdom !
yeah, the other names all sounded fairly generic, thronefall sounds the most unique
Rooting for you guys, this looks awesome!
