I cannot understand how Pete and Dave aren't getting more views, the stuff that these guys do are awesome. No need to defend yourself for tuning/building a car that has function in mind.

I put all those pipes on and just didn't have time to do a full boost leak test... Thanks for getting that done! I did the hard pipes but not the intercooler. Those BOV leaks were not surprising but that bent IC is... ugh. Buying modified cars....

    • @speedacademydave
      @speedacademydave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

Not your fault at all, we had the pipes off for the turbo swap and just didn’t tighten them enough. Goes to show the value of a proper boost leak test, something we should have done before going to the dyno the first time 🤷‍♂️😫

I agree with your guys sentiment on "useable horsepower" especially on manual cars like this. 700HP sounds (and is) cool... but when you only get like 1 millisecond and then have to shift... it's less fun.

I like how he pointed out that early boost/torque will feel like a lot more power than that 329 hp figure. You also gotta realize that that's 329/302 at all four wheels. So it's a fair bit over stock at the crank and when it's hooking up to all 4 tires... that's a really nice build, imo.

Evo 8's are notorious for ground issues. Mine had a intermittent no start issue for forever until I finally just redid every ground in the dash and under the hood. After I redid the grounds it hasn't had any issues since. Also I hate the poly mount on mine as well.

95% of people who want that 800hp car they see on the internet have never actually had to live with one. I've got a 518whp B5 S4 (599whp E85), built motor, big turbos, etc. and I've also got a C4 S4 with maybe ~310whp. I got the C4 about 5 years after the B5, and the C4 experience has honestly made me want to drop about 100whp off the B5. The amount of time I spend using that last 100whp pales in comparison to the amount of time I spend wishing it had better street manners. I don't care how "bout dat life" you think you are, 98% of the time on the street you're going ~35mph.
When you watch a guy roll-racing McLarens on TH-cam in his 800hp (Cool Car), what you _don't_ see is the amount of regular maintenance and upkeep, problem solving, broken parts, custom parts, heat shielding, re-routed plumbing, comfort compromises, and the constant elevated stress of operating something you KNOW is pushed close to its limits because you're getting 3x the power out of a stock block, etc. "What's that smell? is that coolant? is that me? is something burning?" It gets old.

I refuse to quit out of stubbornness, I don't know if my anxiety/nerves/heart can take it. I heard a wet "pshhh" sound and immediately pulled over, imagining that time when my fuel rail backed off. Stood there in the dark panicking, then realized it was just the sprinklers on the side of the road that turned on.

For engine mounts, I suggest hard rubber vs poly or oem. I went with a full set of Tomioka engine mounts for my X and Hard Race for my Integra and they are very livable. I _only_ ever notice them at cold start and during cold idling. Once the car warms up in 5 minutes, they're unnoticeable.

I added highflow twins to my JZZ30 Soarer. It's so so responsive and yet still packs a punch (with E85 and on full boost, it still manages to make 550whp). Totally agree with the useable horsepower. It's a street car and I just enjoy cruising in it. My last turbo was a big single, and while exciting - it had light switch power delivery. Nothing until nearly 4,000+rpm.

I love this build, yes I’m biased because Evo’s are my favourite car but that’s because of everything you guys praised about it. It’s also why I love my Tiburon, that car is basically a front wheel drive Evo coupe. The beta 2.0 is almost identical to a 4G and the transmission, well, I’ve got a Quaife LSD originally meant for a few different 1990’s Mitsubishi’s an it’s flawless.

C4 Corvette. Pull the fuel cap off, remove a trim piece and rubber cover, and a few bolts later the assembly pulls right out the top. New pump in, assembly back in, crank it over and drive off into the sunset. 10 minutes, no interior to remove, no headache 🤙🏻

  • @jkiley4466

Hey guys. As other folks have mentioned, the compressor outlet coupler was extremely close to the exhaust. The reason is that the evo 8 and 9 have different length compressor outlet j-pipes due to the 9 having a larger compressor size. You put the 8 part on the 9 compressor. There are evo 8 to 9 turbo conversion kits that include the 9 j-pipe and new oil and coolant lines that correctly fit the larger compressor housing. Robert should probably replace the j-pipe to give the exhaust enough clearance.

I run a Torque solutions front motor mount on my Evo X. I do hate the NVH from it but the feel in shifting in so much more crisp. And I'll take that any day of the week. Just from the one mount you can tell how much play there was between the transmission movement, etc with the oe mount.

  • @tiger97.17

Gentlemen, your videos are always a moment of relaxation and pleasure.
Just allow me to give my point of view about the motor mounts.
On my LanEVO9, for at least 7 years, 3 of the 4 supports have been rigid mounted. Only the support between the apron and the engine is O.E.M barely reinforced by a Old technic which allows the rubber to be more resistant to vibrations and mouvements (the old ones will find, the others will seek...😉)
And i forgot to say that is my daily.
    Peace...✌

Currently working on DOHC swap turbocharged 2.4L 1990 Hyundai Sonata. It has a lot in common mechanically with a 1g DSM fwd car. Fuel pump install was very easy because the pump mounts to the rear of the tank. Nothing else had to be removed. Also the fuel tank has a drain plug.

The MR2 turbo has by far the hardest fuel pump swap, it requires you to drop the whole gas tank out of the bottom, there is no access any other way. Also its very hard to test for boost leaks, i just put on a new turbo and am having boosting issues as well.

Great to see some Evo content on the channel. Those cars are a lot of fun and reliable with 400-500whp on the stock gearing /final drive. Beyond that it’s nice to have a 4.31 /4.11 final drive and a wide powerband IMO. Fp makes an mhi housing red turbo that spools almost like stock and will make 600whp on ethanol. Great match for a mivec 2.0, or stroker. When is the Evo 6 coming back ?

I had my trans at sheptrans twice on my old car. I always regretted not going to the 4.11. I may do that this time around.

I think the fuel pump on my e36 m3 was the easiest to replace, had the old one out and new one installed in about 10 minutes

I'm sure this isn't what you guys wanted, but helpful for us to see how you troubleshoot and fix these issues. Sounded like brakes were squeaking bad on the test drive?

You guys should consider Magical Fuse. It radically improves sensor readouts, and the ECU will function better with better sensor data!

Easiest fuel pump to get to is in my 1995 Subaru Legacy Wagon. Just lay the seat down and lift up the carpet and you have access to the cover. No removing anything.

B15 sentra. Same as the evo under backseat. Worst is a Ford excursion, had to drop the tank

I want to see you guys do this with an S2K. Just a perfect daily with 300 - 400hp NA power. Ass2k is cool but want to see a daily. 👌

guys, i use two clamps per one side of the couplers, in an inverse manner, tightened on different sides. couplers dont slip and no leak. not sure why people dont do that. maybe it looks funny, to have a helper clamp. or use hair spray. lol

That’s over 400hp at the crank. Still great for a 2.0L.

For your fuel pump part...s2000s are notoriously known for uncomfortable fuel pump installs due to tight space and soft top in the way. Easier if there's no soft top
